3^ EVERY FORTNIGHT No. 3 6 IMPERIAL C O L L E G E 16 M A Y I9S2 At a General Meeting of the R . C . S . U n i o n on Thursday, 8th May, the motion: "That the Morphy Day Rag be sent to Salvage* was passed by 83 votes to 3 7 w i t h 5 abstentions. It was argued that Morphy Day was for boat racing not ragging; that the rag h a d i n recent years declined i n s p o n t a n i e t y , enjoyment and sports- manship, and consequently support for it had also declined. The R . C . S . U n i o n f e l t no longer incliined to engage in this ritual tussle with its friends in Guilds. The opposition appealed to tradition, and while agreeing that the Morphy Rag was not at present sat- isfactory, held that it s h o u l d b e improved rather than abolished. Without a n o r g a n i s e d rag, dis- organised rags would s p r i n g u p - a Morphy Day would fade altogether as a S a i n t Day and Feast Day, and college jhaif-holiday. J I J « I J K 1! » J The Morphy Cup was presented at the end of the lst World War by the family of a member of the Boat Club, to rouse interest i n t h e club, w h i c h w a s at that time flogging. The Morphy Rag, which would have been 3 0 y e a r s old this year,arose spontaneously among B"at Club supporters, a n d o n l y since the 2nd World War became stereotyped into the s c r u m f o r the drum. The Rag has withered i n t h e winter of public opinion about s t u d e n t p r i v i l e g e . It is no longer possible to dismantle the "buses hired to carry reinforcements to Putney or to empty bags of soot and tomatoes over policemen o n p o i n t duty, or achieve a photograph i n t h e " M i r r o r " o f a Bobby being ducked in the Thames; not without a l o t of "tut-tutting" from the welfare state on teie touchline. .Grants are not the best foundation for that fine and careless rapture that waa once the student hallmark. 0 Tempore 0 Flippin'Mores! ' I.C.RS. A N N U A L EXHIBITION The Annual Exhibition of the Photographic Society, held in the gymnasium on the 5th,6th and 7th May, was well attended by members of I.C. and other oolleges. The standard was con- siderably above that of last year; the judge, Mr.C.O.Steinbook, A.R.P.S., stated that it was a good deal higher than he had expected for a College Society. He remarked that, in his opin- ion, some of the prise-winning prints were of the standard of the major London exhibitions. The Pictorial seCtion,the most numerous, contained many fine prints. By comparison, the Technical and Record, and Portraiture sections were almost poor. Many of the outstand- ing prints were by Dr. E. Glaister, who made a very fine gesture in returning his priies to the Society. The response in both the.colour transparency and lantern slide sections caught the Committee by surprise; the arrange- ments for exhibiting these sections were inadequate both as regards the number of entries which oould be exhibited, and their presentation. The response to the "College Activities" section was disappointing. In all, the Exhibition was a success, and all the exhibitors should be congratulated. It is to be hoped that the standard can be maintained in the coming years. INTERVARSITY DEBATE A s u c c e s s f u l v e n t u r e into a new field was made by the U.L.U. Debates Committee in holding a debate entirely i n F r e n c h . The principal guests were from Paris university w i t h o t h e r platform speaicers from Reading University a n d R i c h m o n d C o l l e g e , U.L. The predominantly female audience (of about 80) produced a s t a n d a r d o f speaking at least as high as that nor- mally heard in a U.L.U. debate in English. B E D F O R D D E B A T E EVERY EXPERIENCE IS OF VALUE As was observed by Tony Peacock, more in jest than i n e a r n e s t , the fairer sex lack a logical ap- p r o a c h t o matters of the mind and tend rather to assault one's senses by a n a p p e a l to the heart and the innate goodness inherent in every male's breast. However, it was most pleasant to listen to t h e s e d u c t i v e p l e a s of red-headed E l i z a b e t h B r u n o as she proposed the motion deftly concealed amid quotations and pictures of the brave, whose life had been so enriched by their experiences - and anyway of course experience is valuable - it makes such nice people. In reply, Mr. Peacock battered us with Marxist, absolute Idealist - sophist and what have y o u v a l u e s -.- a l l far too near the point and co- gently made for pleasant debate - but his main de- fence lay i n a few examples of experience being of no value. It was all so m u c h h a p p i e r when Monica Huber, from u p n o r t h , gave a n o n - s t o p , but very hearable, recitation of anecdotes having little to do with the matter. Gallantly r i s i n g t o the occasion in his best pedantic parliamentary manner, Brian Wyatt launched a pooh-pooh campaign upon the ladies present and the subject of debate. This was well-received by all present and warmly ap- plauded . The contributions from the floor were of a varied nature, some attempted to deal with the subject, until selby Angus said that this was his third debate o n v a l u e s , and in one of the previous ones he had reached the c o n c l u s i o n t h a t a t h i n g is of value if it enlarges experience. The subject being dead a lively Jack-in-the-box discussion arose as to the best way to treat hangovers. On this motion the ladles were defeated by 2 2 t o 21f v o t e s , m a i n l y d u e to the block voting of the "solid s o u t h " o r . t h e members of I.C. who had only come for the experience to be gained. With the normal courtesies a b u f f e t refresh- ment was provided. I.C. hogging in one corner and Bedford i n t h e other, with a r a p i d interplay of empty plates. This soon broke u p i n t o a dance where Bedford showed that much valuable experience (non-character building) was to be gained.
