Hobe Sound Murals ProjectReaches #20 Milestone!“What art offers is space - a certain breathing roomfor the spirit.” ~ John Updike

The newest Mural #20, titled “Creating Yourself ” isa burst of color and symbols cascading across the southwall of new Chamber members - ChildrenAcrossAmericaFL. Their “Amazing Things” office and pro-gramming space for youth, family and community, islocated at 10830 Federal Highway. The mural cele-brates learning the languages of science, math, music, literature, and the importance of nurturing creativityin youth and throughout our lives.

Since 2009, each new Hobe Sound Murals project hasappeared and then blended like carefully embroidereddetails in the fabric of our community. When contem-plating any of the 20 murals completed so far, one cansense that the goal to “Create an outdoor gallery of beau-tiful walls, honoring our rich history, present vitality andfuture promise,” is being accomplished.

Among other images, a vivid floral backdrop blos-somed at Bluewater Landscape’s Garden Center, a setof French doors are flung open to a tropical beachalongside Hobe Sound Deli, seasons shift seamlesslyamong the campers at Copley’s RV, the patios of TasteRestaurant offer a dreamy jungle of tropical fruit trees

and garden quilt of flowers, a tranquil scene of an oldFlorida memory is celebrated on the JenkinsLandscape building and even the old train stationfound a place by the tracks again at the Art Gallery.

From Dixie Highway, down Bridge Road and upUS1 each additional creation visually links our corri-dors and showcases the amazing talents of 44 profes-sional guest artists, as well as the collective skills of over100 hobby painters & community members. All par-ticipants are honored on each wall’s plaque and a fewvery special people have gone above and beyond withtheir dedication and help on numerous endeavors.

In the beginning, the grass roots efforts were solelycoordinated by Nadia and Josef Utto with the backingof their company - Urban Camouflage Arts. Fundingcame from them, the assistance of several local grants, initial supply donations, some welcomed buildingpatronage and the much-appreciated labor of all whogenerously donated their time and services.

In 2011, the Mural Project matured to become partof Landmark Arts, Inc., a not for profit organizationdedicated to “Creating Community Culture and pro-moting an enriched community experience throughthe arts.” Its creation was formed to support themurals and another initiative – the WorldFountain/9.11 Memorial, (currently on – hold forboth site and partnership review).

Nadia continues to provide individual professionalservices as an Urban Camouflage artist along with itsliability insurance, scaffolding equipment, etc., butspearheads the mural project’s growth as one ofLandmark Arts six volunteer Board Members; JenniferFerrari, Tom Fucigna, Martha Ann Kneiss, BoshaStone and Josef Utto.

The general economy, building owner and businesstenant budget parameters, continue to affect the fund-ing of each mural. Not including the artist’s remuner-ation, the average basic cost per mural begins at$1,500. Currently, guest painters are compensatedwith either an agreed upfront stipend or after projecttime and costs are tallied, the remaining budget isdivided by individual hourly efforts. These amountshave varied among specific projects. At the nationalstandard rate of $15 per square foot, the project hasprovided nearly $250,000 of mural value throughouttown for approximately only $20,000 over the courseof seven years! Certainly a labor of love for the month–long effort that each mural requires!

The Landmarks Arts,Inc. is in process for acquiring

Today people are business networking more thanever. What I mean by business networking is going toevents with other business people and trying to makemore contacts for future business, or more importantly, finding referral partners (a referral partner is a term weuse at JRC Consulting Group that identifies a personwhom we pass referrals with on a regular basis). Theseevents are important to many business people andunfortunately many people take them very lightly anddo not think of these meetings as an opportunity tomake a first impression. I could write an entire bookon my networking experiences over the past 30 yearsthat would make you laugh, cry, read in stunned shockand sometimes not believe what you are reading.

A few years ago I was at a networking event that I willremember forever. I did the usual check in and as Ilooked at the sea of people I started scanning the roomfor someone I did not know. When you attend network-ing events one of your objectives should always be tomeet new people. Bingo, within seconds I saw a gentle-man standing by himself. I casually walked over to himand introduced myself. As he said hello and started tointroduce himself I was almost knocked over by a heavydose of bad breath! I tried to step back a step however,he felt obligated to get closer. As he is telling me allabout how great his company is and how he can helpevery single person in the world the next thing I knewhe was putting his arm around on my shoulder like wehave been friends for years. I decided that out of thekindness of my heart I would help him out and offerhim one of my mints. When he stated he did not needone I almost fell on the floor both from amazement andthe odor of his breath. I decided that it was time for meto go and excused myself to go to the restroom.

Why I am sharing this particular story is so that you

understand the impor-tance of your hygieneand appearance whengoing to events. Beingproperly dressed for anevent is just as impor-tant. Either shave orhave a beard, not inbetween (unless you arestarting a new beard),and of course make sureyou have breath mints. When it comes to dress-ing, make sure youdress the part of what your business happens to be. Ifyou are a pool cleaner you may not have to wear a suitto a regular Chamber of Commerce event, however ifyou are going to an awards dinner you should dust offthe suit and make it look good. Also, you should alwayskeep in mind the dress code for certain facilities. I wasinvolved in a networking group for years and we met atlocal private country club and we had a strict dress codefor the meeting that we had to enforce for the club. Itruly appreciated that. The bottom line is you shouldalways be ready to meet your next biggest client, referralpartner or your existing clients, because you never knowwhen your next gigantic client or referral source isstanding right in front of you.

Have you, or someone you know, received a phonecall from a complete stranger who said your computerwas in danger of crashing? They said that they workwith – insert any legitimate computer/software companyhere – and your computer sent them a message that it isabout to crash. This crash will result in a catastrophic lossof all of your data. Once they have you significantly con-cerned for the security of your personal information, they indicate that they can fix the issue for you over thephone. All you have to do is permit them remote accessto your computer and pay a technical support fee, whichcan be several hundred dollars.

The truth is, unless you have made some special kindof contractual arrangement, your computer will nevertake it upon itself to contact another organization. Youmay ask, how do they know my name and other personalinformation? Simple. It is available through a variety ofpublic directories and databases.

For example, they can go to different websites toobtain residential addresses in an area. Then they simplygo to that county’s Property Appraisers website andacquire personal information associated with thataddress. Now a call can be made and they can ask for theresident by name and be able to verify their homeaddress. This minimal amount of information is oftenenough to convince some people the call is legitimate.

Here are some tipsto remember.

• Recognize yourcomputer is not con-tacting people for you

• Do not giveremote computeraccess to anyone youdid not contact forhelp, and then onlyafter you are certainthey are a trusted serv-ice provider

• Never give person-al information to any-one you do not knowand trust

• Never provide your financial or credit card informa-tion to anyone you do not know and trust

• No legitimate company will contact you and ask youfor your password or other confidential information
