    Dear Parents,

Sometimes I think ISM is already a great school. Surely anyone who witnessed the tremendous Bearcat spirit during th

recent IASAS basketball tournament would recognize an exceptional school spirit. Anyone who was in attendance at th

International Family Fun Day or Band Aid performance would recognize the fantastic collaboration between HS Clubs

the PTA, the student entertainers and the wider ISM community. Anyone in the audience at the Great Works Concert

last night would appreciate the outstanding talent and quality of the musicians. However this evidence of greatness

does not preclude ISM from being immune to the same sort of issues that impact the effectiveness of public and privat

high schools all around the world. The HS administration became aware of a specific example of this last Thursday when

we were confronted with what I thought was a simple and isolated case of someone saying something nasty abou

another student online through a social networking site. What I discovered was that this was in fact a much larger issu

than I had previously realized. It appears that it has become over the last few months, through a particular socia

networking site called Formspring, common practice for some of our students to post anonymous messages that use

combination of profanity, defamatory and derogatory comments about other students. These comments amount to

cyber bullying and unlike the days when you could identify your bully, these cyber bullies are able to hide behind fake

pseudonyms, aliasess or even worse take the identity of another student. This sort of practice strikes at the heart o

who we are as a HS community and clearly contravenes not just our core values and beliefs but a number of ou

Information and Communication Technology Use Policies (page 37 of the HS Planner). I want to make it clear that w

treat cyber bullies exactly the same as any other form of bullying and quoting the HS Planner

Students should be aware that all parties involved in fighting, physical intimidation, harassment, hazing

initiations, bullying, cyber-bullying, participating in group behaviors that intimidate or threaten physical o

psychological harm, recruiting or encouraging others to participate in harmful or intimidating behavior may b

immediately recommended for withdrawal to the Superintendent.

We presented on this topic at this weeks HS Parent Coffee. You can find a copy of the presentation on the ISM Guidanc

blog site at this location. http://guidance.ism-online.org/

In addition we are planning to speak to the entire school at a special assembly next Wednesday, February 16th.

In other news this month we continue our efforts to educate all students on the course registration process for the nex

school year. All high school students have now received information via assemblies, class meetings, discussions wit

counselors and the IB coordinator in terms of what courses will be on offer in the high school next year and the likel

pathways that students can take to meet ISM graduation and IB Diploma requirements. Please take time to discuss thes

important course selection decisions with your child. The HS Course Offerings can be found on the ism.org website a

    this location http://www.ismanila.org/portal/alias__/lang__en/tabID__333/DesktopDefault.aspx
