Message from the High School Principal:
Dear Parents,
It has been another busy week in the High School. We had a very good parent turn out at the monthly Parent Coffee Meeting on Tuesday. We covered amongst other topics, the Global Issues Network or GIN conference that ISM is hosting next week and in addition the upcoming course registration process for the next school year. High school students are currently receiving information via assemblies, class meetings, individual teacher and counselor discussions and via the IB coordinator, in terms of what courses will be on offer in the high school next year and the likely pathways that students can take to meet ISM graduation and IB Diploma requirements. Please take time to discuss these important course selection decisions with your child. The HS Course Offerings book for next year can be found on through this link http://www.ismanila.org/portal/alias__/lang__en/tabID__333/DesktopDefault.aspx Please be reminded that next Friday, February 17, is a teacher professional development day and students are not required at school, though about 80 ISM students and 400+ plus from around Asia will be here for the GIN conference. An anticipated highlight of the GIN conference this year is the fact that we have integrated the annual Battle of Bands into the Saturday night festivities. The fact that the BOB organization annually raises in the vicinity of US$10,000 for ISM’s service learning program has not been lost on the conference organizers and this is in fact one of ISM’s three student run workshops presented by students and for students at the conference. For more information on BOB, GINManila2012 or HS Course selection please contact your child’s counselor or the High school Office. Kind regards

The International School Manila Modern Languages
Department is pleased to announce its 2012 Summer
Language Study / Home-stay / Travel Program to Spain. This program is for students 14 years of age or older as
of June 1st. It aims to develop students’ language
proficiency and to broaden their cultural knowledge. Thisprogram is being offered in cooperation with Tandem
(http://www.escuela-montalban.com/index.php). We with
spend three weeks at the Granada campus and one
week at the Madrid campus. Students will continue
learning and more importantly practicing Spanish through
total immersion in classes and during the home-stay. The
Tandem school finds families for students to stay with,
assists in locating appropriate local resources for the
group’s activities, plans outings, maintains a list of local
medical and emergency resources, and helps with the
orientation for group leaders.
Students will receive Spanish classes each morning that
include language and culture subjects and prepare
students for cultural visits. The cultural program will take
place in the afternoons/evenings and will be made up of
various supervised activities that take advantage of the
unique environment while taking into account the
individual interests of the students. Cultural activities
include things such as preparing paella, guided tours of
historical buildings, towns and museums, watching
flamenco dancing, visiting hot water springs, beach trips,
horseback riding, etc.
The dates of this trip will be approximately June 2nd
–
30th, 2012. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer
Diaz ([email protected]) to receive more information.
Students are parents interested in this trip to Spain
should plan to attend an informational meeting at 5:30
on Wednesday, February 29th

IASAS SWIMMING SUMMARY:
New School Swimming Records: 6.
o Ray Oo, broke George Go's 50 Butterfly record, he also broke his own 50mFR, 100m FR, 200FR, school records.
o Lotta Toppari lowered the 800 Freestyle record by 13 seconds, and came very close to improving Cha Inn Moon
400m Record, she missed it by less than half a second.
o The boys 4x100m relay team was the swim of the meet for our team, the team is made up by Yong An, Jae wo

second place ISB by 5 seconds, who also beat their school relay record. Sailfish swimmers should watch the vide
of this swim, it is inspiring to watch. https://sites.google.com/a/jisedu.or.id/iasas‐swimming/day3/session

Overall the boys came 5th, and the girls 6th. For the boys the final placing was disappointing considering it was ou
strongest boys team from the previous years. The final point score shows just how close to ISB and TAS we were. The
teams traded places throughout the meet. ISM were placed 4th at the start of Day 3, half a point ahead of TAS, and 2
points behind ISB. In the end we didn't put as many swimmers in the A finals as the other two teams.
The boys
reached
finals
34
times
this
year,
and
finished
with:
3 Gold,
2 Silver,
we
reached
the
A
final
13
times,
the
B
Fina
21 times our best result in many years, hopefully we can convert those B Final swims into A Finals next year. In 2011 w
put 28 people into finals, 2010 had 24, 2009 we placed 12 boys into finals, 2008 had 13, and 2007 we had 16 finalist.
For 6 of our girls it was their first IASAS, I am sure they now know what they have to do next time, and will be back in th
water very soon to ensure they improve their results next year. A few of our experienced girls seemed to catch every fl
that went around, were injured, or were busy with school work, so they spent much of the season out of the water, a few
still swam personal best times, I am sure they will be back next year wiser and stronger than ever before. Lotta and Lun
had an outstanding meet, Lotta, stepped onto the winners dais twice for 2 silver medals, Luna won a bronze, an
definitely acquired a taste for medals.
The Girls reached the finals 21 times, we reached the A final 8 times and the B Finals 13 times, we finished with: 2 Silver
1 Bronze. Compared to previous IASAS meets, we reached finals 20 times in 2010, 2009 we had 6, and in 2008 we had 1
finalists, 2007 had 12.
Overall we swam in 144 events, 106 of those were personal best times, Yong An, Harry Cho, Ivi IIaya, Jae Woo Jan, Ju
Woo Jang, Alex Klauser, Aly San Jose, Mai Shafei, Tyler Sy and Justin Van Klaveren, all swam a best time every time the
swam, an outstanding effort guys. It should be noted that some of our fastest swimmers did not need to swim their ver
fastest in the heats, instead they saved themselves by swimming for a place in the final then swam their very fastest in th
finals.
The team we took away were easy to coach, you all cheered for each other, and took care of each other, thank you for
fantastic IASAS at JIS.
Coach Hazel and Kaight Forgie, you also were fantastic to travel with, Kaight for all her organizing at the meet and whil
travelling, Hazel for all you hard work on pool deck.
Coach Andy
