Structure and assembly steps overview

Collar-pack assembly• 4 collars bolted against the full length G10 keys• Shimming of the alignment key to ensure contact between

collar and keys

Coil-pack assembly• 4 pads bolted around the collars

Final assembly and loading• Master/bladders and Keys stack is prepared based on coil-

pack assembly • Insertion of the coil-pack in the yoke shell sub-assembly by

sliding on the bottom masters• Insertion of the side and top masters • Masters include load keys and bladders + pull shims

Key parameters to watch• Preload level• Alignment: collar and key must be in contact• Preload uniformity

HQ02 Azimuthal Preload Target

02/15/2013

Conservative Target preload ~ 200 T/m

Target Preload at 300 K:• eq shell / pole = 863 me / -450 me• sq shell / pole = 66 /-63 MPa

Target Preload at 4.2 K:• eq shell / pole = 1905 me / -720 me • sq shell / pole = -169 / -147 MPa

Focus area # 1: Alignment (II)

02/15/2013

• HQ01a-b: no alignment• HQ01c-d-e: alignment• Importance of key/collar shimming• Use of pins and feeler gauges to quantify gaps

Focus area #2Preload distribution and uniformity

Previously HQ assemblies and previous LARP magnets exposed the importance of matching the coil OD to the collar/pad ID

• Preload distribution on the coil OD can be controlled by adjusting the radial shims• Attempt to correlate with CMM measurements

• Adjustment made using Fuji pressure sensitive film during collar pack assembly• 2 IR collars available

Focus Area #3

• Apply a conservative preload to avoid degradation

HQ02 Preload Target summary

Conservative Azimuthal Target preload ~ 200 T/m

Target Preload at 300 K:• eq shell / pole = 863 me / -450 me• sq shell / pole = 66 /-63 MPa

Target Preload at 4.2 K:• eq shell / pole = 1905 me / -720 me • sq shell / pole = -169 / -147 MPa

Axial Preloadsz rod = 60 / 160 MPaAxial preload was never an issue in HQ

• Fuji paper used to evaluate ideal radial shimming

• Adaptive shimming is a possible option if spread between SG is larger than 10 MPa
