A Rough Start
Professor Jha: “Now I’m going to ask all of you for the names by which you wish to be called and I’ll write them on the board”
Kid in the Back: “Why are you putting them on the board?”
Prof. Jha: “So you can get used to my handwriting before it actually matters”

Syllabus
Worth 1 Credit Still Learning Objectives:
Experience and comprehend the complexities and rigor required for open-ended problem solving
Understand the value of teamwork in the academic environment
Have fun exploring topics of your own interest
Emphasis on group problem solving and good communication skills (written, oral, and demonstrations)
Schedule
Class is required for some of the days!!
Other dates are office hours
Office hours also available by appointment
**Additional Dates may be required at our discretion
So…. What are we doing?
Solve a real life problem using MATLAB
Project/Problem Should: Utilize MATLAB as the solution method Justify the use of a computer Be relevant Demonstrate competency in problem solving
and the use of MATLAB as a tool Communicate effectively in different manners
and to various audiences
Groups
Groups: Consist of TWO members Partner with somebody of similar MATLAB
comfort and competency Grades are NOT directly related to program
complexity but rather overall problem solving method & if project matches competency
Peer Evaluations
Some Possible Ideas:
Sports Predictors Blackjack Simulation Simple Circuit Analysis Electromagnetic Point Fields Visual 3-D Vector Field Optimization Physical Modeling
If you’ve taken Diff. Eq. you shouldn’t have a problem coming up with any ideas!
Some Previous Ideas:
Cryptology (Enigma Machine) Solar System Simulation Modeling the Spread of Diseases
(Zombie Outbreak) Artificial Intelligence (Chess, Poker, etc.) Stock Market Predictions Genetic Algorithms (Subway Optimizer) Research Projects
What We’re Looking For
Meaningful, Substantial Project with relevance
Problem Solving Methodology Partner Cooperation & Communication General Communication skills across
different media
Notes: GUI
If you choose to use one: GUI (That fancy looking thing):
To be used as a FRONT END to your program ONLY
Your solution/problem should not be based on the GUI
GUI should be minimal compared to main engine
Additional Topics
Additional lectures may be given as requested Example Topic Areas:
GUIs Image Processing Solving Differential Equations with MATLAB General Numerical Methods
We plan to give at least 1 of these optional topics, if you have any topic that many of you would be interested in we can do it!
Final Thoughts:
Class REQUIRED for the days listed on the syllabus
Find a partner by next week
You get out what you put in We will know if you don’t try
We will NOT have all the answers
Questions or Clarifications?
