Virtual tapes… Why?
Cost of physical tape
The Business Case for Virtual tape.
• Tape media cost• Vaulting/off site storing and transport cost• Operators time for labeling, cataloging, mounting and manipulating tape media• Security cost and potential lost if media are lost or stolen• High cost to be PCI DSS compliant• Tape drives cost and replacement• Tape technology lack of compatibility from one generation to another• Cost of migrating technology every few years
Cost of virtual tape
The Business Case for Virtual tape.
Cost of virtual tape solution
Cost of storage if not leveraging enterprise storage
No tape media cost
No vaulting/off site storing and transport cost
No operators time for labeling, cataloging, mounting and manipulating tape mediaNo operators involvement in running backups with NetBatch
No security cost and potential lost if media are lost or stolen
Lower cost of PCI compliance
No tape drives cost and replacement
No cost of migrating technology every few years

Disk based
Storage solution
– B3600 disk shelf– Uses SmartArray P441 external SAS controller in Proliant– treated as DAS, not a SAN– 27TB net usable can be extended to 54TB– Optimized for replication (each shelf: 50% local storage, 50% replication space)
– Any SAN compatible with Windows– HP, IBM or EMC SAN– 1-port 16 Gbps FC HBA for SAN (option)
– Any NAS– NAS appliances with CIFS interface– 10GbE NIC (option)
•
Storage solutions
Deduplication appliances–HPE StoreOnce, EMC Data Domain, Quantum, – Using CIFS interface
• Takes advantages of deduplication. From 8x to 20x+ • All data online all the time• Automatic replication with low bandwidth utilization• Data at rest encryption (post deduplication) with StoreOnce and Data Domain
EBS – Store and forward and conduit mode
Storage solutions
– Data Protector, Tivoli Storage Manager, NetBackup, NetWorker– Store and forward– Used in conjunction with disk– Client installed on the VTC– Scripts can be used to automate backup of virtual volumes to EBS– Disk space managed automatically if EBS supports the archive bit.
– Tivoli Storage Manager conduit mode– Using the TSM API BackBox writes the virtual volume directly to TSM– No local disk space necessary

PerformanceTests done using host simulator
Summary of the test
– The tests were performed using an utility called “Host Simulator”. It simulates a NonStop writing to or reading from BackBox tape drives. Two
– Two Windows server used, one was a VTC and the other one was the host simulator.
– A script was used to generate multiple the test with different arguments and parameters.
– The Windows performance monitor was used to capture the data.
Equipment and utilities used
– 1 server serving as Host ( Model DL380, Gen 9, 2U )
– 1 BackBox VTC serving as Target ( Model DL360, Gen 9, 1U )
– 1 Host Simulator utility
– 1 script to generate multiple tests
– 1 performance monitor to capture the data on the VTC.
Test condition : Hardware setup
– The target (VTC) is configured with “Celerity Registries Enable Target Mode” set.
– The target had 2 Raid5 groups: – one group with 3 disks of 6 TB– one group with 6 disks of 4 TB.
– The host is configured with FC “Celerity Registries Disable Initiator Mode” unset.
– Host and target were connected with fiber and the HBA set to 8gbps.
NOTICE
The results presented thereafter show the BackBox capacity to process
data.
It is not intended to show actual Nonstop to BackBox performance which
are affected by disk i/o, CPU usage, process priority.
Test parameters
Script
– A simple script is used to issue run tests with the Host Simulator with various parameters.
– Output is written to a *.txt and *.csv files for further analysis.
Performance monitor setup
– The data are collected with a Data Collector Set with some of the following settings:– Keywords : CPU, Memory, Disk, Network, Performance– Overall Duration : 6 hours
Test: 1 Port, 1 Raid Group, Disk io BLK size 256 KB, block size 52 kb, 1 to 8 devices per port
Test: 2 Ports, 1 Raid Group, Disk io BLK size 256 KB, block size 52 kb, 1 to 8 devices per port
Test: 2 Ports, 2 Raid Groups, Disk io BLK size 512 KB, block size 52 kb, 1 to 8 devices per port
