Frederick William Howay was born near London, Ontario on 25 November 1867. The
Howay family moved to Clinton, B.C. in 1870 where they remained until 1874 when they
moved to New Westminster, B.C. F.W. Howay taught school from 1884 until 1887. After
this he spent three years at Dalhousie University in Halifax, 11.3., where he trained
as a lawyer. For the fcllowing sixteen years Howay practiced law in New Westminster.
In 1907 upon the retirement of His Honour Judge Bole, he was appointed Judge of the
County Court of New ~:estminster. From the late 1890s onward F.W. Howay studied
and wrote on the subject of B.C. history. It was the celebration in New Westminster
in 1908 of the centenary of Simon Fraser’s descent of the Fraser River and of the
fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of the Royal Engineers, that finally brought
Judge Howay before the public as a speaker and writer on historical subjects, With
in a few years he was becoming knoim as an authority and in 1914, in collaboration
with the late D.O.S. Scholefield, he published a two—volume work on the history of
British Columbia. Judge Howay finally retired on 30 November 1937. After his re
tirement he devoted himself to his literary and historical pursuits. F.W. 2-loway
died in New Westminster, after a brief illness, on 4 October 1943, in his seventy—
sixth year. For twenty—seven years — from 1915 until 1942 — he served as a member
of the Senate of the University of British Columbia.
