The Library now has an events calendar linked on the right side of the Library’s home page. You can take a look at it at http://www-library.ncifcrf.gov/. This calendar lists all events and classes sponsored by the Library--whether they happen in the Library or elsewhere. You will find all of the REWARDS, Science in the Cinema, and other program events there, along with classes organized by the Library. We are hoping this will be an easy way for you to see all of the Library events at a glance. We look forward to hosting many instructional and entertaining events for you this year.

The Scientific Library, the Frederick Employee Diversity Team, and Occupational Health Services will present the first REWARDS program of 2008 in late January/early February. REWARDS: A Multi-Part Learning Program is designed to help attendees learn more about consumer health topics through participation in Book Discussions, Movie Viewings, and Invited Speaker Talks. The topic for the first program of 2008 is multiple sclerosis. Please watch for announcements, or check the REWARDS website, for more information.

During the first 2 weeks of December, in recognition of World AIDS Day, the Library showed a documentary titled The Age of AIDS. This documentary is available now for checking out of the Library. We had also planned to host a movie and a speaker in early January, but due to scheduling problems, that program has been postponed. We hope to reschedule the movie The Cure and the speaker, Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, in early spring. Please watch for future announcements, or check our Science in the Cinema webpage.

The popular magazine Cooking Light is now

available for checking out of the Library! Previously, this magazine could only be used in the Library. Now, if you have a Library barcode, you can check out a copy and read it at home. Cooking Light is a monthly magazine that provides recipes for healthy eating and guides to healthy living. Stop by and check out a copy

Library Orientations Upcoming Library Orientations will be held on the following dates and times:

The 60-minute orientations, which are held in the Library’s Technology Training Lab in Building 549, require no registration.

We encourage all new (and not-so-new) employees to attend a SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY ORIENTATION to learn about the many services and resources offered by the Library. If you are unable to attend these sessions, please call x1094, or email tfrederick@ncifcrf.gov, to schedule an alternate session.

2008 Journal Additions & Print Cancellations

The Scientific Library has been working over the past year on the conversion of a number of print journals to online only to reduce budget expenditures and save shelf space. We identified over 80 titles which will no longer be received in print in 2008. All titles will continue to be available online from 2008 forward from the Library’s Online Journals list at http://www-library.ncifcrf.gov/onlinejournals.aspx. Reading Diversions Book Club The staff of the Scientific Library is organizing a new READING DIVERSIONS BOOK CLUB for 2008. Interested readers will be invited to read a selected book and then join in a small group discussion of that book. We hope to host a new READING DIVERSIONS BOOK CLUB every 6-8 weeks, beginning in January 2008. The discussions will be held in the Scientific Library at lunchtime or after work, depending on the preferences of the members.

READING DIVERSIONS is a special Scientific Library collection of books written in an informative and entertaining way. People read these books for scientific INTEREST rather than for scientific RESEARCH.

Featured Websites CDC’s Public Health Image Library (PHIL)

Do you need a picture of a MRSA bacteria or an influenza virus to use in a presentation? Look no further than CDC’s Public Health Image Library or PHIL. Created by a Working Group at the CDC, PHIL offers an organized, searchable, electronic gateway to CDC’s photographs, illustrations, and multimedia files. Appropriate for public health professionals, the media, laboratory scientists, educators, students, and the public, the images can be used in reference, teaching, presentation, and public health messages. Content is organized into hierarchical categories of people, places, and science, and is presented as single images, image sets, and multimedia files. PHIL provides a link to a high-resolution publication-quality version for each picture and is especially strong in infectious diseases. Accompanying each image is a description, content provider with contact information, date created, photo credits, and copyright restrictions.

nanoHUB – a Web 2.0 Network for Scientists

nanoHUB.org, a gateway for nano-science and nanotechnology housed at Purdue University, uses Web 2.0 tools with information about algorithms, carbon nanotubes, nanoelectronics and quantum dot. Other science disciplines, such as pharmacy and medical research, will be launched using the same technology. nanoHUB, with over 24,000 users, also includes nanoelectronics course material along with online simulations. nanoHUB is a project of the National Science Foundation-funded Network for Computational Nanotechnology, a consortium of research universities, government agencies and corporate research labs.

Survey Service Now Available ACS Journals & Usage-Based

Pricing

Effective in 2008, the American Chemical Society (ACS) announced the implementation of a new pricing model for web subscriptions. Pricing plans were established for four library types: domestic academic, international academic, corporate, and government. Each plan assigns customers to specific tiers using criteria to ensure that like customers pay like amounts for their subscriptions. The model utilizes value-based metrics such as number of articles published, ISI impact factor, and total downloads (combined HTML and PDF) to establish prices for the online versions of each ACS journal. The usage for 2008 pricing is based on 2006 usage of all ACS journals at a particular site. One positive feature of this model is that while the more heavily used titles are priced higher, less heavily used titles go down in price. For NCI-Frederick, the five highest priced titles are: Journal of the ACS; Biochemistry and Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (tie); Journal of Organic Chemistry and Organic Letters (tie).

While not an unreasonable method for calculating subscription costs, this model does present a challenge for future budgeting. We are most concerned about the lack of transparency of pricing information for the new model on the ACS website. In particular, the Tiers for usage ranges and pricing differences among the four library types are not apparent. Although ACS is among the first publishers to implement usage-based pricing for their web subscriptions, we do not expect they will be the last. The Scientific Library now has a subscription to the full-ser-vice version of SurveyMonkey, the easy-to-use web tool for creating surveys. If you want to learn how users feel about the services you provide, we can help. We can create an easy-to-use web survey with a link that you can provide to your users, who can then complete the survey in a few min-utes. New Look for Web of Knowledge There are exciting changes for ISI Web of Knowledge. The design enhancements are intended to simplify the interface and streamline your work flow. The new look was made available in 2007 for testing, but it is planned to be the only interface available, starting in January 2008.

One of the most important features in the redesign is the All Databases search, which replaces CrossSearch. The All Databases search allows you to:

• Search across all ISI Web of Knowledge databases available at NCI-Frederick/NIH

• Retrieve up to 100,000 results, automatically sorted by the journal cover publication date

• Easily refine and analyze your search results

To search a specific database in the new interface (such as Web of Science or Biological Abstracts), first select the individual product on the Select a Database page. Then you can perform:

• General or Advanced Searches

• Specialized searches using all search fields available within a specific database

• Cited reference searches (Web of Science only)

EndNote Web, which is included in ISI Web of Knowledge, also has a redesigned interface that makes it easier to use.

If you registered to use the personalized features in the previousversionofWebofKnowledge,yourlogininformation will not change. You can use the same login for EndNote Web.

ISI Web of Knowledge provides access to not only the Web of Science (also known as Science Citation Index) but also Biological Abstracts,Journal Citation Reports, and more. You can access it by visiting the Library’s homepage at http://www-library.ncifcrf.gov/ and choosing the Databases link and selecting Web of Science on the initial list or Web of Knowledge on the complete list.
