BROAD-SPECTRUM CONTROL IN STRAWBERRIES

MIDAS provides broad-spectrum control of the toughest soil-borne diseases, nematodes and weeds.

WEED SEEDS, including broadleaf weeds such as nutsedge, pigweed and lambsquarters, and grasses such as bermudagrass and annual bluegrass. E ectiveness against hard-seed weeds, such as mallow, dodder, morningglory, and certain leguminous weeds, may be variable.

PLANT-PARASITIC NEMATODES, such as root-knot, root lesion (meadow), cyst, citrus, burrowing, false root-knot, lance, spiral, ring, stubby root, dagger, awl, sheath and sting (stylet) nematodes.

SOIL-BORNE DISEASES, such as Verticillium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Phytophthora, and Fusarium.

THE FUTURE OF SOIL FUMIGATION

California strawberry growers have a brand new tool in soil fumigation. New MIDAS® from Arysta LifeScience is the next-generation soil fumigant. MIDAS raises the standard for preplant soil treatments by providing the same proven, broad-spectrum control of soil-borne diseases, weeds and nematodes as methyl bromide. It provides this broad-spectrum control while o ering a new level of application fl exibility that allows for traditional broadcast fl at fume, drip or raised-bed shank applications. MIDAS sets a new standard in control and application fl exibility.

MIDAS is a combination of methyl iodide (also known as iodomethane) and chloropicrin. Researchers at Arysta LifeScience, as well as the University of California and other leading universities across the nation, have spent more than a decade developing and researching MIDAS.

“ This area is very conducive to having soil pathogens or soil-borne disease such as Phytophthora, Verticillium and red steel. Those are the main soil problems that we have around here. Through the use of methyl bromide, we’ve been able to keep them under control, but in other trials that we have done with other materials, we really have not seen that good of control, since the soils are heavily infested with those diseases. But with MIDAS, we do achieve the same level of control on those diseases.”

PROVEN PERFORMANCE

Arysta LifeScience has put MIDAS to the test both in the lab and in the fi eld, working with cooperators across the nation. Year after year, trial after trial, it has delivered consistent yields and quality.

In side-by-side tests, MIDAS equals or surpasses the current standard, methyl bromide in the areas where it matters most — total yields, marketable yields and plant vigor ratings.

MIDAS STANDARD USE GUIDELINES

» The standard rate of MIDAS 33:67 and MIDAS EC Gold is 200 lb/A broadcast under Virtually Impermeable Film (VIF).*

» MIDAS 33:67 is used in fl at fume/bed shank applications.

» MIDAS EC Gold is used in drip applications.

» As a Restricted Use Pesticide, MIDAS can be applied only by applicators who are certifi ed by the state and trained by Arysta LifeScience North America, LLC in the proper handling, worker protection and application of MIDAS, or by trained and PPE-equipped handlers under their direct supervision.

» When applied according to label directions, MIDAS controls or suppresses a wide range of important weed, nematode and fungal pests.

» MIDAS must be applied using Highly Retentive Films, Virtually Impermeable Film (VIF) or Totally Impermeable Film (TIF), except for tree/auger probe applications. Contact your Arysta LifeScience representative for a list of approved fi lms.

» Highly Retentive Films cannot be removed or perforated until 14 days after application unless safety conditions require early removal. Films usually are not perforated or removed for 14 to 21 days before planting. Use the longer period under conditions of high soil moisture, heavy soils or rain.

*Final rate selection should be based on pest pressure. Always read and follow label directions, as well as state and local requirements.

“ With MIDAS, having the option of fl at fuming or running it through the drip certainly makes it a lot more viable for us in the future, depending on what our fumigation needs are.”

APPLICATION FLEXIBILITY

With most fumigants, growers have to adjust their agronomic practices based on their product choice. With MIDAS, however, they can tailor their fumigation method to the conditions of each fi eld. MIDAS o ers growers the fl exibility to choose not only a powerful new fumigant but also how they want to apply it. Depending on their unique challenges, including bu er zones, soil type, slope of fi eld, application window and key target pests, growers now have the opportunity to choose a broad-spectrum fumigant and application method that is optimal for each fi eld.

MIDAS can be applied by the traditional broadcast fl at fume method to achieve the control growers have come to expect. Growers can also have broad-spectrum MIDAS applied by drip irrigation, delivering similar results to traditional fl at fume while allowing growers to choose the preferred application method that fi ts their individual needs.

ADVANCED CHEMISTRY

» OZONE FRIENDLY. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded Arysta LifeScience its prestigious Ozone Layer Protection Award in 2009 in recognition of its work on MIDAS. Growers now have a tool not a ected by regulations to reduce the impact on the ozone layer.

» CROP SAFETY. MIDAS strawberry trials have demonstrated excellent crop safety. This attribute, combined with broad-spectrum control, enables growers to maximize the potential of their MIDAS-treated fi elds.

» NO ACCELERATED MICROBIAL DEGRADATION. After repeated use, soil microbes can develop the ability to degrade certain fumigants at ever-increasing rates. This phenomenon is referred to as Accelerated Microbial Degradation, or AMD. Over time, AMD makes certain fumigants less e ective. Initial research indicates MIDAS, unlike other products currently on the market, is not a ected by AMD and can be an e ective tool in removing soil microbes that cause other fumigants to be less e ective.

INDUSTRY-LEADING STEWARDSHIP

It’s hard to believe that MIDAS is the fi rst new broad-spectrum fumigant to be introduced in more than 20 years. Arysta LifeScience has demonstrated its commitment to the industry by bringing this important new tool to the market, and is equally committed to the industry-leading stewardship and training program that raises the bar for other fumigants.

MIDAS stewardship includes the use of cutting-edge VIF. This fi lm not only allows for reduced fumigant rates but also is e ective at improving fumigant retention, which reduces emissions and improves safety for workers and bystanders. Growers not only experience the economic benefi t of lower use rates under VIF but also demonstrate their interest in using new technologies that address public concerns regarding the safe and e ective use of fumigants.

Arysta LifeScience has implemented a rigorous training and certifi cation program as another important component of its industry-leading stewardship. Only applicators who are state-certifi ed and trained by Arysta LifeScience in the safe handling and application of MIDAS are allowed to handle and apply the product. Arysta LifeScience intends to work directly with applicators to ensure the e ective stewardship of MIDAS and its continued availability and use for the future.

SUCCESS WELL INTO THE FUTURE

Growers of high-value crops are concerned about the long-term availability of fumigants required to remain competitive and profi table in a global environment. Arysta LifeScience developed MIDAS to meet the soil fumigation needs of today and has implemented a comprehensive stewardship program to ensure the availability of this important tool in the future. The commitment of Arysta LifeScience to high-value crop growers is demonstrated by the approval of MIDAS by both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
