Opening General Session of a Conference A Live Poll in your opening general session is a great way to familiarize your audi- ence with the Event App and empower them to provide live feedback throughout the event. The poll can be used to focus your audience around the theme of the event or get them in the right frame of mind for the opening session. Have your host, president, or emcee ask the audience to open their app and select the Polls & Feedback Module to take the Live Poll. Projecting the question onto a large screen will bolster engagement. Just be sure to give the Live Poll Results link to the AV tech so he or she can display the results as they come in. Education Sessions/Internal Training For Live Polls to work successfully during education sessions or internal training, you’ll need your speaker’s buy-in and advocacy during the session. To get their buy-in, position Live Polls as a fast and engaging way to tally up the audience’s familiarity or comfort with a topic, get a read of the room’s interests, or take the pulse or general feeling toward a statement or theme. Live Polls can be an easy way to inject participation or audience voice into a speaker’s content. When you think about your job and your department, is the biggest challenge that you don’t have enough

time or that there is a lack of clear direction?

✓ Not enough time

✓ Lack of clear direction

For the best results and visual on the Live Results page, allow users to select only one answer to your Live Poll question. This will allow you to take the pulse of the room.

Allowing users to select multiple answers can be used for gathering interest in different topics, but remember that every person has multiple “votes.”

FOUR TIPS FOR CREATING LIVE POLLS1. Ask speakers if they would be interested in using Live Polls in their sessions when they’re creating their content. Have

them submit the poll content to you in advance of the event so you can load it into the app.

2. Use polls sparingly for greater impact.

3. As a rule of thumb, don’t include more than 3 polling questions in a one-hour presentation.

4. Include “Don’t Know” or “No Answer” in the list of responses so everyone can participate.

WHAT TO ASK YOUR SPEAKERSTo use Live Polls successfully, you’ll need help from your speakers. Here are some strategies to get their approval and advocacy:

✓ Consider adding the use of Live Polls to their speaking agreement. It’s not uncommon for event planners to ask their speakers to include a participatory aspect to their session and Live Polling can fill that need.

✓ In your discovery or content calls with speakers, ask them if they’re interested in getting feedback from the crowd during their session. Most speakers want to tailor their content to the people in the room, and Live Polling is one way to do this.

✓ For Live Polling to be effective, you’ll need to load the questions into the Event App before the session begins. Consider requesting this info at the same time you receive the speakers’ presentations or including a deadline for Live Poll ques-tions and responses. Download this template.

✓ If the “speaker” is your emcee, add the Live Polling question and description to the emcee’s script but be sure to rehearse the live polling onsite and prepare the AV tech to display the results via the Live Results link in the Content Manager.

BEST PRACTICES FOR IMPLEMENTING LIVE POLLS ONSITE ✓ Include a slide that has the steps to access the Live Poll in the presentation or on the big screen

✓ Have the speaker introduce the poll and read the question out loud

✓ Have a slide that includes the question and answers for the poll

✓ Give attendees enough time to pull out their device, read the question, and submit a response (estimate 1-2 minutes per question)

✓ Switch to the Live Results page and have the speaker discuss the results
