Becoming a Dutch Citizen
• Individuals have three options available to them when deciding to apply for Dutch nationality.
• The naturalization procedure is the most commonly used one and it takes approximately one year.
3
Ways to Acquire Dutch Nationality
• The three ways to become a Dutch national are:
through birth or acknowledgement;
through the option procedure;
through the naturalization procedure.
4
Criteria for Obtaining Dutch Nationality
• Individuals must comply with one of the three ways to become a Dutch national and must be prepared to renounce their previous nationality, if applicable.
• After gaining Dutch nationality they will enjoy the basic Dutch rights.
5
The Naturalization Procedure >>
• The naturalization procedure may come as a next step for those who have been living or working in the Netherlands.
• Several conditions apply for this procedure and an exception is applicable if the applicant is married to a Dutch citizen with whom he/she has lived uninterruptedly for three years.
6
>> The Naturalization Procedure
• The following requirements, and others, apply for the naturalization procedure:
18 or over and having lived legally in the Netherlands or one of its constituent countries uninterruptedly for 5 years;
have a valid permanent residence permit (that will still be valid for the duration of the procedure);
being able to read, speak and understand Dutch and having passed the Civic Integration Examination.
7
The Option Procedure
• Individuals can become Dutch citizens if they opt for this. This is a quick procedure, subject to certain conditions: being born in the Netherlands and having
lived here with a valid residence permit; no nationality from birth, born in the
Netherlands and lived here uninterruptedly for three years;
minor acknowledged by a Dutch citizen; adults who have been living in the
Netherland since age 4 with a valid residence permit.
8
Renouncing Other Nationalities
• Most individuals who apply for Dutch nationality will lose their original one. There are some exceptions to this rule.
• Two notable exceptions apply in case of minors and for those who have an asylum residence permit.
9
Dutch Citizenship by Acknowledgement
• Individuals can also become Dutch citizens by birth or acknowledgement. If they are born before 1 January 1985 and the father is a Dutch citizen at the time of birth they receive Dutch citizenship.
• Other conditions apply for individuals born after 31 December 1984. Our Netherlands immigration agents can give you detailed information.
