The background of the design of

Zuhra Hilals collection: Omo

In his book „ Natural Fashion“, the Photographer Hans Silvester, documents the extraordinary body painting of the Surma and Mursi peoples of the Omo Valley from southern Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan. They paint their bodies

with natural pigments made from the earth. The people from Surma

and Mursi use their bodies as canvases, painting their skin with pigments made from powdered

volcanic rock and adorning themselves with materials

obtained from flowers, leaves, grasses, shells and animal horns.

His wonderful photographs inspired the fashion designer

Zuhra Hilal for her collection. She used 10mm long pins as

meterial and draped the pin field in an abstract way to show the artful beauty of the people. Zuhra Hilal

works very experimentally, always trying to develop new materials and ways to adorn the female

body.
