    neigh(orhood linked the esta(lished East /illage and 0o1o neigh(orhoods,

    and inha(ited old guard Italian, 2hinese and 3o%ini&an i%%igrants Portions

    of the world &ollided within the s%all New York 2ity neigh(orhood every

    single day, and one %an wanted to &onne&t that &o%%unity with the power offood

    Today, that sa%e New Yorker has turned his idea into an ever*e4panding

    e%pire that in&ludes si4 restaurants, a non*profit organi'ation, an i&oni&

    residential (uilding, an award winning &lothing &o%pany, and one of the

    world$s largest e*&o%%er&e we(sites The a%(itious %an, however, still

    %eeting hi%, or even (y looking at his (usiness &ard It$s his unpretentious

    sin&erity, pier&ing passion, and undenia(le instin&t that give away his evident

    su&&ess 1e is a rare spe&ies of 2E7 that doesn$t have to win anyone over with

    industry 8argon or an elevator pit&h

    This was all e%anating fro% a %an who (uilt the 2af9 1a(ana (rand,

    pioneered &o%%er&e in the now trendy No+ita and Ft reene neigh(orhoods,opened New York$s first solar powered restaurant, and was an initial investor

    in the glo(ally renowned e*&o%%er&e we(site, Etsy 1e didn$t have to %ention

    his list of a&&o%plish%ents That is, until I grilled hi% for infor%ation

    A re&ent &onversation with hi% got %e thinking a(out those not*so*o(vious

    traits that su&&essful entrepreneurs share Those traits that aren$t &onfir%ed

    through a sta&k of water%arked (usiness &ards or designer suits, aren$t

    vo&ali'ed (y dropping na%es or %ade up %ultisylla(i& 8argon, and aren$t

    perfe&ted with pra&ti&e or learned fro% a (ook These are innate traits thatpeople with the entrepreneurial spirit posses, (ut truly su&&essful people

    %anifest the% through all their endeavors

    But where do those traits &o%e fro%; I reali'ed that it all starts with passion )

    the intense &o%pelling e%otion, desire, and enthusias% for so%ething

    do that ) &ele(rate people and (ring people together ) in a way that was even

    In ##C, he opened the1a(ana 7utpost, New York$s first fully solar powered&af9, and it ?ui&kly witnessed the sa%e fa%e that its older si(ling did in

    6anhattan The spa&ious area and outdoor seating gathered even %ore people

    fro% the Ft reene neigh(orhood, and 6eenan was again i%%ersed in his

    new neigh(orhood

    2ontinuing with his urge to s&ale his passion, 6eenan &ontinued to %anifest it

    in different ways ?ui&kly 1e founded a nonprofit &alled 1a(ana -orksthe

    following year The foundation offers weekend progra%%ing for &hildren and

    parents, a design progra% that gave ar&hite&ture students the opportunity to

    help the neigh(orhood through design, and initiatives that worked to greenthe area with &o%%unity gardens

    Feeling fully &onne&ted to the neigh(orhood, 6eenan pur&hased a residential

    (uilding that would (e&o%e a Brooklyn i&on The Brooklyn +ove (uilding also

    a&ts as pu(li& art, with Brooklyn*&entri& %urals painted (y lo&al raffiti artists

    and art students, who &o%%e%orated for%er Brooklyn*ite Biggie 0%alls on

    the (uilding$s e4terior wall

    Eventually, 6eenan$s 1a(ana (rand (e&a%e an i&oni& neigh(orhood staple inits own right 7thers (egan to take noti&e and wanted a pie&e of Brooklyn

    -ithin the ne4t few years, 6eenan opened several %ore 2af9 1a(anas as the

    opportunities arose ) two restaurants were opened in the Bar&lays 2enter,

    ho%e to the Brooklyn Nets, and others were opened in 6ali(u and 3u(ai

    Passion can inspire others

    6eenan ad%its that when he opened his e&o*&ons&ious 1a(ana 7utpost in

    Brooklyn, he drank the prover(ial solar*powered 5ool*Aid -hat (egan assolar panels installed on the rooftop ?ui&kly snow(alled into (i&y&le*powered
