Transcript of How to Install Carpet Protection on Stairs

Protecting a home during construction and

remodeling is critically important. The last

thing you want to do is damage the home

you’re trying to improve!

One of the trickiest areas to protect is a carpeted stairway. The

structure and shape of certain stairways make it difficult to

maneuver protective material.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO APPLY CARPET PROTECTION TO A STAIRWAY:

By hand

By using a carpet film dispenser

This guide will show you how to protect your stairs by applying film

by hand as well as with a dispenser.

Let’s start with rolling out carpet protection by hand.

APPLY CARPET PROTECTION TO STAIRS BY HAND

1

START AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS AND PRESS THE FILM

INTO PLACE

Leave about a foot of base material at the top

to work with.

STEP 1

1

PULL THE CARPET PROTECTION DOWN ABOUT THE LENGTH

OF TWO STAIRS

It’s important not to press yet at this stage. At

this point, you are simply rolling out enough

material to cover the surface space.

STEP 2

1

CUT THE FILM ON THE FIRST STEP AND PRESS IT INTO PLACE

Cut the film to fit the first step, and press it

into place. Be sure to apply pressure into the

nook of the step, so the material can adhere

to the shape of the stair.

STEP 3

1

REPEAT THE PROCESS DOWN THE REST OF THE STAIRS

Continue slowly down the stairs. Measure the

length needed, cut the material, and press it

into place. Repeat the process until you reach

the last stair.

STEP 4

1

CUT THE FILM AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS TO FINISH

When you reach the bottom of the stairs, make

the final cut and press the material into place.

You may want to work your way

back up the stairs pressing and

smoothing the film to ensure it is

complete.

STEP 5

!

APPLY CARPET PROTECTION TO STAIRS WITH A CARPET

FILM DISPENSER

DO I NEED A CARPET FILM DISPENSER?

Carpet film dispensers, although not required, certainly make the job

easier. Operating a carpet film dispenser is smoother and faster than

applying film by hand, but depending on the size of your area it may

not be necessary for your needs.

YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER A USING A CARPET FILM DISPENSER IF YOU:

Have a large area of flooring that needs protection

Experience back, hip, knee, or other joint problems that make manual labor difficult

Have upcoming projects that also require a dispenser in the future

Need to complete the job quickly

1

START AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS AND PRESS THE FILM

INTO PLACE

Again, leave about a foot of base material at

the top to work with.

When using a dispenser, be sure to position

yourself on the downside of the stairs when

you roll out the film. This way, you can apply

more body strength and protect yourself

from falling.

STEP 1

1

PULL THE CARPET PROTECTION DOWN THE LENGTH OF THE

FIRST STAIR AND PRESS INTO THE CORNER

Apply pressure while pulling the material down

into the corner.

STEP 2

1

EXTEND THE CARPET PROTECTION ACROSS THE TOP OF THE

SECOND STAIR AND REPEAT

Still applying pressure, pull the film out of the

corner, across the surface, to the edge of the

next stair. From here, you are positioned to

continue pulling the material down the length

of the next stair, and repeating the process

until you reach the bottom of the stairwell.

STEP 3

1

REPEAT THE PROCESS DOWN THE REST OF THE STAIRS

Continue to press the film into place as you go.

STEP 4

1

USE THE DISPENSER AS A BASE TO CUT THE FILM WHEN

YOU ARE FINISHED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS

The dispenser makes a nice cutting edge to

finish applying the material.

Again, to ensure that the film is down, it is

best to go back up the stairs to smooth and

press the film into place.

STEP 5

CONCLUSION

Whether you apply carpet protection by hand

or with a dispenser, the important thing is you

are taking the right precautions to prevent

damage to your carpet.

JUST FOLLOW FOUR SIMPLE STEPS:

Start at the top and press the film into place

Extend the material to cover the next stair (if applying by hand, cut material for each stair as you go)

Repeat the process down the rest of the stairs

Cut the film at the bottom of the stairs to finish.
