The title of the discussion was how do we enable product start- ups? As the conclave pro- gressed, some of the break through ideas to emerge were ones conceived while attacking health and educa- tion sectors and in solving the ` 100,000 crores -human capital capacity opportuni- ty that I spoke of at the World Quality Congress earlier this year. The discussion zeroed down to two key human capital issues to enable high-tech product start-ups  the ent r ep r en e ur i al team and the business angels (BAs). As a business angel (BA), India is still to mature as the silicon valley of the East! A level of clari- ty is emerging in the start- ups about the role of BAs and as to how they benefit high tech start-ups. BAs assist the start-ups in four key ways; assisting in bootstrapping and over- coming initial funding dif- ficulties and hiccups; pro- viding active and hands on post-investment involve- ment in a start-up to scale faster; leveraging the industry network; and pro- viding leverage for the next round of funding. Although BAs are the old- est, largest and most impor- tant source of incubation funding for high-growth start-ups, collectively, BAs invest between two and five times more capital in start- ups than formal venture capitalists. But, the issue is about the selection of the start-ups to fund! Here is a 10-factor framework that I have used to assess a start- up to invest for from the perspective of a BA. First, the start-up team’s experience. For the product start-ups to succeed, high- tech experience is a critical success factor. Second, co- mmitment. The start-up team should have a passion and ability to execute a global ambition. Third, BA’s compatibility with the start up. Forth, business orientation of the start-up team. It is important that the team cares about the product and customers. Also the team has to show a global awareness and sensi- tivity towards the needs of the customers. Fifth, lead- ership. It may sound clich- éd, but integrity, focus and strategy are important fro- m my perspective. Manage- rial experience of the start- up team needs to be sharp. Second, guts and the endurance of the team. The team should be able to han- dle adversity and have the stamina to be a long runner while working under pres- sure. Third, the team work between the founders. Start-ups breeds cama- raderie and the winning spirit if team members have worked together in their earlier avatars and have some element of work understanding. Fourth, entrepreneurial experience to scale the venture beyond the idea and first few cus- tomers. Lastly, the team should know their weak- ness. For BAs the challange is whether the team will take advice or not; and willingly step aside to bring in others to handle the situation if required.  Kapil Khandelwal is a leading healthcare and ICT expert. A software developed by three IT professionals promises to change the teacher, students, parents dynamics. Called Edualert, the software has been developed by US-based Keralites Akbar Narendran and Sanjay Nair, and Rajiv Viswanath who is based in India. “Edualert can give suggestions to a student and his parents as to which career suits him best based on his academic perfor- mance,” 33-year-old Narendran said during a visit to Kerala to promote the software. The modus operandi goes some- thing like this. Details of a child’s entire academic history, his interests and extra curricular activities right from the first grade is fed into the software. “Through an analysis, it would reveal which is the best career option for the student,” Narendran said. Edualert operations manager Ramakrishnan said the thinking of parents in the state for long has been that there are only two good professions engineering and medicine. “We have observed that many children for fear of earning the wrath of their parents unwilling- ly opt for either of the two most sought after professions,” said Ramakrishnan. The basic version of Edualert is free for schools. Around 10 schools in the state have already given the nod to this unique product. “In January, we will come again because we have got numerous enquiries from schools in some metros and Tier II cities. We will first do a demon- stration of our product in front of teachers and parents,” said Narendran. The software with add-ons ver- sion comes fairly cheap and it will cost 10 percent of the annual fee of a student, said Narendran. “It includes a centralised process of taking attendance which takes only a few minutes. When done, an SMS will be sent to the parents of all those stu- dents who are absent. Likewise, the moment corrected answer papers are distributed, parents will get an SMS about how their child has performed,” said Narendran. Another interesting feature is that the moment the child enters the school bus, he will be monitored and in case there is a traffic jam, an SMS alert will go to the parents. “It took us two years to fully develop it as we did it in our spare time. We are now working on some other add-ons,” said Narendran. Krishnamurthy Iyer, principal of the A.R.R. Public School, pre- dicts the “revolutionary” soft- ware to be a huge hit in the edu- cation sector. “We installed it  just two weeks back and from the first look, it’s something unique. It is certainly going to improve the quality of students, parents and teachers. All the information on children and their progress would be available at a click of a mouse,” said Iyer. However, a Class 12 student had different views on the subject. “In many homes, the relation between parents and children is friendly. The software wouldn’t bother those kids. But overall, parents would always like to know what their ward is doing which is a little scary,” said the student, before saying that since his schooling was almost over, he had escaped. However, a mother of a Class 10 student said: “Children need not be worried because this is a tool for their own betterment and for their good future. Activision’s biggest hol- iday title sold 6.5 million units in a single day after going on sale early this week, surpassing last year’s record of 5.6 mil- lion units or $360 million in sales. The version of the game released last year, called Call of Duty:  Black Ops , went on to rake in $1 billion in less than two months. Chief Executive Bobby Kotick revealed in an interview on Friday the company will be able to expand the Call of Duty franchise by offering fans new game content each month over the Internet, and having them pay for it with annual subscrip- tions. Along with the console game, Activision is releasing Call of Duty  Elite, a subscription ser- vice that costs $50 annu- ally and offers extra online content, including apps for mobile devices. “What you’re likely to see is a shift over time in the whole economic model for these kinds of games. The varsity’s Perelman School of Medicine evalu- ated cardiac arrest and resuscitation related tweets during a month- long period in early 2011, according to a statement.
