Begin by looking at the publication information at the beginning of the article. If you see a specific publication date with a month/year or season/year, it is a journal; if you see just a year, it is a reference book in this database. In example, we are working with a journal article.

Getting Started in NoodleTools/NoodleBib

• Log into your account• Open the list you have created for this

research project/assignment• Have your information source available and

at your fingertips (in this case, it will be the live version of the article in the GALE LRC database).

Starting the Wizard

• Choose “online database” from the dropdown menu; it will be under “electronic resources”

• Press, “create citation”• Leave the radio button at “yes”• For this example, select “journal”• Press “next”

“Tell Us More About This Source”

• You will leave the radio button at “journal”•Make no changes• Press next

Journal Information

• Information about online retrieval of this source: leave at the first choice, “retrieved from an online database”

• Tell Us More About This Source: typically, you will choose the first option that is selected by default, “article”; if you are not 100% sure, ask a librarian or your teacher for assistance.

Adding Basic Information

• You will now enter as much publication information as possible

• Fields with an asterisk (*) must be completed

• Rarely will you ever have the information for every information field in NoodleTools/NoodleBib; they try to give you as many options as possible.

Hints: 1. when adding the author’s name to NoodleTools, be sure to hit “add” to make the name stick 2. Double check the MLA capitalization rules for journal article titles; NoodleTools has a helplet for this; you may also ask your librarian or teacher for help.

Page, Volume, Issue, Publication Date

Volume and Issue (volume is 17; issue is 4)

Hints: If the publication date includes a season, NoodleTools provides an option for those in the dropdown menu.

Database Name

Follows the word “from” and is in italicized print

Hints: As you start to type the database name, NoodleTools will recognize it and autofill it for you once you select it.

URL• Remember to look for the text link that says

“bookmark” or “infomark” at the top of the page in GALE databases. Sometimes you will also see link to the bookmark beneath the publication info of the article.

• Open the “bookmark”• Copy and paste the URL into the URL field in

NoodleTools/NoodleBib

Final Steps

• Check for MLA style errors. If any items are flagged in red, ask your teacher what he/she prefers you do---sometimes you may need t make MLA style corrections, but at other times, your teacher may tell you to ignore the suggested change.

• Generate the citation
