The key to successful vinyl siding application is in theplanning. Proper installation is the best way to ensure youMitten vinyl siding lives up to its reputation for quality. The method of applying vinyl siding and soffit is essentiathe same for new construction and residing projects. However, where required, special instructions for newconstruction and residing are included. In all applicationscare should be exercised to properly prepare the structurIt is recommended that installers review local buildingcodes before starting a project of this nature.

How to MeasureAll houses can be broken down into shapes ofrectangles or triangles or a combination of both. The area to be sided can be determined by measuringthe height and width of the house including windowsTotal all of the measurements for the areas to besided. Windows and doors are not usually deducted.Including them will provide an allowance factor forwaste. If the windows and doors are extremely large(such as garage or sliding glass doors), some deductiocan be made.

Power SawA bench or radial-arm power sawcan speed the cutting of the siding. Afine-tooth blade (12 to 16 teeth perinch) should be used with the bladeinstalled in the reverse direction.

Utility KnifeVinyl is easy to cut, trim andscore with a utility knife orscoring tool.

Tin SnipsGood quality tin snips orcompound aviation-typesnips will speed the cuttingand shaping of the vinyl.

Snap Lock PunchA snap lock punch is used topunch lugs in the cut edges ofsiding to be used for the top orfinishing course at the top of a

    wall, or underneath a window.

Nail Hole Slot PunchOccasionally, it may benecessary to elongate a nailhem slot. The hole is elongatedto allow for expansion andcontraction.

Unlocking ToolRemove or replace a sidingpanel with the unlocking tool.Insert the curved end of thetool under the end of the paneland hook onto the back lip of

the butt lock. To disengage thelock, pull down and slide thetool along the length of thepanel. Use the same procedureto relock a panel.

Basic Installation Guidelines Before getting started, it is important to reviewseveral common rules for vinyl siding application.Vinyl siding, like all building materials, expands andcontracts with temperature changes. The amount ofexpansion and contraction can be as much as 3/8of an inch. This expansion and contraction must beaccounted for in advance to prevent the siding frombuckling which will mar the appearance of your home. The following rules, which come up throughout thisguide, are critical for proper vinyl siding installation:

    1. Do not store siding in a location wheretemperatures exceed 130F or 54C (i.e. On black toppavement during unusually hot weather or under tarpsor plastic wrap without air circulation.)

    2. Installed panels must move freely from side to side.

    3. When installing a siding panel, push up from thebottom until the lock is fully engaged with the piecebelow it. Do not force the panels up or down whenfastening in position. Stretching the panel upward pullsthe natural radius out of the panel and increases thefriction of the locks.

    4. Always nail in the center of the slot. WARNING:Do not nail at the end of a slot! Doing so will causethe siding panel to be permanently damaged. If youmust nail near the end of a slot to hit a stud, etc.,extend the length of the slot with a nail slot punch tool.

    5. Do not drive the head of the nail tightly againstthe siding nail hem. Allow 1/32 (about the thickness

of a dime) clearance between the nail head and thesiding panel. Drive nails straight and level to preventdistortion and buckling of the panel.

    6. Leave a minimum of 1/4 clearance at all openingsand accessory channel stops to allow for normalexpansion and contraction. When installing intemperatures below 40F, increase minimum clearanceto 3/8.

    7. Do not caulk the panels where they meet thereceiver of inside corner posts, outside corner posts, or

J-Channel. Do not caulk the overlap joints.

    8. Do not face-nail or staple through siding. Vinylsiding expands and contracts with outside temperaturechanges. Face-nailing can result in ripples in the siding.

    9. In residing, furring or removal of uneven originalsiding may be necessary.

    10. In new construction, avoid the use of greenlumber as the underlayment. Keep in mind that sidingcan only be as straight and stable as what lies under it.

    Basic Installation Tools and Equipment

    Common hand tools, such

as a hammer, fine-tooth saw, square, chalk line, level, andtape measure are neededfor proper installation. Safetyglasses are recommended foreye protection. Other basictools include:

    Preparation

Inspect and plan the job in advance. Check surfaces fstraightness and fur when necessary. Surfaces should

uniform and straight from various viewing angles.

To achieve designed performance, vinyl siding mustbe installed over a weather resistant barrier system thaincludes a continuous weather resistant material andproperly integrated flashing around all penetrationsand where vinyl siding interfaces with other buildingproducts such as brick, stone, or stucco. Always consuthe applicable building code for minimum weatherbarrier requirements in your area. Keep in mind thatadditional measures may provide better protectionagainst water intrusion than the minimum requiremenof the building code.

    Fastener Choices

Use aluminum, galvanized steel, or other corrosion-resistant nails, staples or screws when installing vinylsiding. Aluminum trim pieces require aluminum orstainless steel fasteners. All fasteners must be able topenetrate not less than 3/4 into framing or furring.

StaplesIf staples are being used instead of nails orscrews, they must:

Not be less than 16 gauge semi-fattenedto an elliptical cross-section Penetrate not less than 3/4 into framing

or furring Be wide enough in the crown to allow

free movement of the siding (1/32 awayfrom the nailing hem).

    1/32"

    Install bladebackwards

ScrewsScrews must be centered in the slot with a minimum 1/32space between the screw head and the vinyl. Screws mustbe able to penetrate not less than 3/4 into framing orfurring and should be: Size #8, truss head or pan head,corrosion-resistant, self tapping sheet metal type.

Safety goggles are always recommendedfor all cutting and nailing operations. Ason any construction job, use proper safetyequipment and follow safe constructionpractices.

With a circular saw, install the fine-toothed(plywood) blade backwards on the saw fora smoother, cleaner cut, especially in coldweather. Cut slowly.

CAUTION! Use of a backwards blade onany other materials could be unsafe.

With tin snips, avoid closing the bladescompletely at the end of a stroke for a

neater, cleaner cut. With a utility knife or scoring tool, scorethe vinyl face up with medium pressureand snap it in half. It is not necessary tocut all the way through the vinyl.

    Cutting the Siding

When cutting vinyl siding, follow these guidelines:

    5/16" minimum1/8"

    Nails

Nail heads should be 5/16minimum in diameter. Shankshould be 1/8 in diameter.

Install Corner PostsCut post to the length requiredallowing 1/4 gap between the top ofthe post and the eaves or soffit. Beginnailing at the top of the upper slot onboth sides of the corner post, hangingcorner post in position. The balanceof the nailing must be in the centerof the slots at 8 to 12 on center. If more than one length is required, refer to the following note for cuttingand overlapping instructions.

    Note

    Horizontal SidingStep 1Obtaining Starting Point

The first step is to determine where you will apply the fircourse of siding. This can be at the same level as the oldsiding or, on new construction, at a level that will coverthe edge of the foundation. Use a chalk line and a level obtain a horizontal starting point so that all installed sidiwill be perfectly level. At all corners, use a plumb line toensure that corner posts are vertical.Follow these steps in the order shown for the easiest andbest application.

1/4" space at top of wa

    8" - 16"

    1/4" forexpansion

Step 2Before the siding itself can be hung, a number ofaccessories must be installed first. This includes starterstrip, corner posts, window flashing, trim and J-Channelover the roof lines and at top of walls.

All corner posts should be cut to appear the same andshould extend 1/4 to 1/2 below first course of siding.

Make sure the panels are fullylocked along the length of thebottom, but do not force them uptight when fastening.

Do not nail or staple through face ofsiding. This may result in ripples inthe siding.

Do not drive the head of the fastener

tightly against the siding nail hem.Leave a minimum of 1/32 (thethickness of a dime) between thefastener head and the vinyl.

Tight nailing, screwing or staplingwill cause the vinyl siding to bucklewith changes in temperature.

When fastening, start in the centerof the panel and work towards theends.

Center the fasteners in the slots topermit expansion and contraction ofthe siding.

Drive fasteners straight and level toprevent distortion and buckling ofthe panel.

Start fastening vertical siding andcorner posts in the top of the uppermost slot to hold them in position.Place all other fasteners in the centerof the slots, spacing the fasteners amaximum of 16 apart for horizontalsiding, every 12 for vertical sidingand every 8 to 10 for accessories.

    Application for high wind areas.Using a 5/8 nylon washer with a 1/4

hole between the nail and siding, youcan increase the wind load capabilitiesof your siding installation.

    Fastening Procedure

Vinyl siding can expand and contract 1/2 or more over a126 length with changes in temperature. Whether using

nails, screws, or staples to fasten the siding, the followingbasic rules must be followed:

    Fitting Siding Around Fixtures

For handling protrusionsaround the wall, manufacturersaccessories specifically designed

to fit around protrusions can beinstalled or you can cut sidingpanels to match the shape andcontour of the obstruction.Always begin a new course of siding at the fixture toavoid excess lap joints.Cut a slot 1/4 larger than the fixture.

To fit the siding under windows anddoors or under the eaves, measure

the distance from the bottom edgeof the lock on the finish trim tothe bottom edge of the top lock ofthe last full siding panel. Add 5/8"to this measurement to allow thepanel edge to engage in the finishtrim. Cut the siding panel to the

adjusted measurement under thewindows or at finish of sidinginstallation.

Using the snap lock punch, punch ears in the trimmededge of the siding panel at 8"intervals. Be sure the "ears" face

outward from the wall. Lock the top edge of a sidingpanel in the finish trim andsecure the lock at the loweredge of the panel.

To fit the siding over the top of windows and doors, cutout the bottom section of the panel leaving 3/8" clearancon both sides of the window, so that the horizontal edgeof the cut out fits firmly into the finish trim.

Installing Siding Around Windows and Door

    Step 6

    Top of Wall Finish

Siding is measured and finished off at the top of thewall in exactly the same fashion as under a window odoor, as explained in installing siding around window

and doors, except that full sheets of siding will be useTo finish siding on gables install a J-Channel along thegable angle against the soffit. Cut siding to the properangle and install siding in the J-Channel, leaving a gafor expansion.

    Minimum 2'

No less than3 rows beforerepeating lap

    position.

    Drip Cap

The drip cap is nailed above thewindow and door and extended on

either side, flush with the exposed legof the J-Channel. A tab is cut at eitherend of the drip cap and bent downover the J-Channels.

If required to maintain panel angle, afurring strip is nailed over the dripcap.

    Step 5

    Install Siding Panels

The first siding panel is engaged inthe starter strip and nailed. If thesiding can be moved laterally afterit has been locked up, a positivelock has been achieved. Continuenailing on 16 centers (and not over8 centers in high wind areas). Leave1/4 or 3/8 of space where sidingfits into accessories to allow forexpansion. When installing belowfreezing leave 1/2.

Overlap the vinyl panels half the dimension of thefactory notch.

For the best appearance, laps should be away from trafficareas and staggered horizontally a minimum of 2 fromone course to the next. Do not repeat and overlapin on vertical line for a minimum of 3 courses. Whenoverlapping do not nail closer than 6 from the ends ofboth panels.

Installing Vertical Siding on Gable Ends

For a clean look, you want to have the groove of thevertical panel centered in line with the peak of the gable

Step 1Install horizontal furring strips 12 oncenter or a solid nailable sheathingprior to the siding, if needed, tolevel the surface or provide sufficientmaterial for 3/4 fastener penetration.

Step 2Establish the vertical starting baseline. Install corner posts even withor slightly below the chalk lines.J-Channel should extend into cornerpost. (Remember to allow 1/4 forexpansion.)

Step 3Install J-Channel around windows anddoors and along eaves. The J-Channelat the top of the opening should

extend over side of J-Channel by 1/4.Cut and bend this top portion downover this side of J-Channel. (This willallow water to run off.)

    Step 3

Enclosed OverhangsFor soffit applications withenclosed overhangs, start byinstalling 1/2" or 5/8"

J-Channel along wood fasciaboard and on wall edge levelto bottom of Fascia board.Nail J-Channel every 8-10. Cut Soffit panels 1/4" shortthan dimension "A" and fit into place, locking panelstogether. Fasten with nails. If you are removing existing wood soffit or molding, youmay need to level area with a 1" by 2" furring strip.

    Step 4

Open RaftersTo install soffit on an open rafteroverhang, F-Channel is attachedto the wall face and eitherF-Channel or Fascia with orwithout "J", is attached to fasciaboard. Soffit is then cut to widthof opening and suspendedbetween. For rafter widths greaterthan 24", we recommend acenter fastener support shouldbe provided. This can beprovided by nailing 2 X 4'sfrom fascia to wall face every3 rafters then attaching a1 x2 flat along bottom ofthese support hangers. Soffitpanels can be screw-nailedinto this support.Corners may be squared off or mitered.

Installation Guidelines for Foam Back CladdinIt is important that foam back products be given

the full tolerance available for expansion andcontraction. Follow these guidelines to ensure

the products will maintain a level and flat, "just

installed" appearance for years to come.

Please refer to the basic guidelines on page 4 as theyapply to foam back cladding installation as well.

Mitten designed foam back cladding accessories mustbe used on all insulated installations.

Do not nail or fit the panel tightly.

When installing between outside corner and J-Channeinsert the panel in the corner post first, then open theface of the J-Channel and insert. The same steps arerequired between two J-Channels or an Inside Cornerand J-Channel.

The 1-7/8 face Undersill Trim is used on the bottom owindows or at the top of the wall when the last courseis being installed.

The foam is glued to within 2.5" of the end of thefactory cut to allow the overlap to be tucked behind thfoam for a perfect lap.

The foam must be butted tight to achieve maximumR-value. Make sure the panels slide freely whenengaged with the foam.

Push up from the bottom until the lock is fully engagewith the piece below it.

Do not force panels up or down when fastening inposition.

Stretching the panel upward pulls the natural radius oof the panel and increases the friction of the locks.

Be sure to use SecureLockTMInsulated Starter strip astraditional starter will not work.

    Step 7

Securing Fascia cap to Fascia BoardIf you are installing Fascia without J, this is one of therare instances that face nailing is allowed. Drive the nailthrough the "U"-shaped groove in the soffit panel usingsmall-headed nails.Once the soffit is face nailed to the Fascia cap it willexpand in one direction - toward the receiving channelopposite. Allow space for expansion of soffit.

    Step 6

FasciaFinish Trim is installed around the

top perimeter of the wood FasciaBoard.Measure the width of the face tothe finish trim and add 5/8" toinsert into Finish Trim.Overlap adjacent lengths of fasciaby approximately 1". To do this, cut away a 1-1/2" section fromthe bottom part of the underlyingfascia. It is necessary to nailthrough one end of each Fasciapanel so as to fix its position.Position the anchor nail as shownin diagram so that the overlappingFascia cap will cover the nail. Be

sure to drill a 3/16" pilot hole forthis nail.

How to Keep Your Siding Looking Like New!

While Mitten Inc. Solid Vinyl Siding comes closer to beitotally maintenance free than any other siding on the

market today, it will become dirty just as a freshly paintehouse, new automobile or any other product which isexposed to atmospheric conditions. Generally, your Mittvinyl siding can be cleaned satisfactorily through the useof an ordinary garden hose. If this does not do the job, then we suggest the following:1. Equip a garden hose with a soft bristled, long handlecar brush. Avoid using stiff bristle brushes or abrasivecleaners, which may change the gloss of the cleaned areand cause the siding to look splotchy.2. Where soil is of a stubborn nature, (as frequently fouin industrial areas) the following cleaning solution workswell: 1/3 cup detergent (Tide as an example) + 2/3 cuptrisodium phosphate (Soilax as an example) + 1 gallon owater.

In certain geographic areas where mildew may be aproblem, substitute one quart of 5% sodium hydrochlori(Clorox for example) for one quart water in the aboveformula.Where the house is extremely dirty, it is recommendedthat you start washing from the bottom and go to the toprinsing frequently. Cleaning solutions should be permitteto stand on the surface of the siding for several minutesbefore rinsing.

Tips and Tricks for Foam Back Installation

Installing in tight spots between windows

Place a nail at the bottomof each of the two verticalJ-Channels between thewindows to hold them inplace.

Leave the remaining nail slotsfree of nails for the moment. This allows the installer to flexthe J-Channels in order to slidethe next insulated panel intoplace.

After each panel is installed, put another nail into the

    J-Channels and repeat.

    Installing around pipe protrusions, etc.

Begin a new panel at the fixture.

Cut to match the shape of the fixture.

Make the cut 1/4" larger than the fixture.NOTE:If available, use a commercially manufacturedtrim ring or fixture mount.

    Cleaning Saw and Knife Blades

Use mineral spirits to wipe your blades clean as theybegin to accumulate adhesive residue or vinyl particles.

At the end of the day, remove the saw blade from thecircular saw and allow it to soak for a short time in thissolvent to loosen any residue build-up.
