Bird baths fordrinking & bathing
Protection from predators and proximity to foodand water are a bird’s primary considerationwhen choosing a nesting site. If bluebirdschoose to nest in your yard, you can observethem as they build nests, lay eggs and feedtheir young. And when it’s time for the fledglingsto leave the nest, they’ll likely learn to feed atyour feeders and bathe in your bird baths.
Open Water Offering water to drink and bathe is attractive tobluebirds; moving or dripping water is evenmore attractive. Keep the water fresh andwatch them come in regularly to bathe anddrink.
Serve the MealBluebirds primarily eat insects when availableand supplement this main diet of insects withvarious fruits and berries. Some of the moreenticing feeder foods readily eaten by bluebirdsinclude mealworms, Peanut Butter&Jelly suetand Birdacious® Bark Butter® Bits.
Bluebirds will gobble up as many mealworms asyou offer; especially when the young are beingfed. Put some out in the morning and some inthe evening and watch your bluebirds becomeregular visitors.
Birdacious treats like Bugberry Bark Butter andBark Butter Bits are excellent alternative foodsfor a bluebird as they transition from theirwinter diet to their summer insect diet.
Open House x2Bluebirds are secondary cavity nesters, usingpre-existing cavities. They don’t excavate theirown. They readily use a well-placed nest boxdesigned for them, preferring open areas suchas fence rows.
Sometimes other birds will use a bluebird nestbox, such as swallows. If this happens, you caninstall a second box. The bluebirds will use oneand the other bird species will use the other. For best results, try placing the two boxeswithin 20 feet of each other.
