How it operates? The record label signs an artist, which means that the individual

makes an exclusive contract with the company in order for them to produce albums/ songs to become successful. Methods are then put in place to promote the artist and ensure success for their future. They are designed to live up to a standard as they are seen as idols and are looked up by young people.

Music is then recorded according to the artists genre and a video is produced to go along with it. The song is then marketed to the public and released on a particular date. This creates a sense of hype, and excitedness. The amount of profit a single/ album makes depends on the number of individuals who have purchased the song. This will increase the artists recognition, and make them more popular.

Statistics The image on the right hand side

indicates the percentage of people who buy music, in comparison to those who stream it for free. 27% of individuals purchase songs from the internet, or in the form of a CD. Whereas 29% of the population get access to music for free by using illegal websites, and 14% take part in both activities. The number of people streaming songs is increasing every year, which has an impact on the music industry, the reason being that their profit levels begin to decrease, as less people are spending money on purchasing songs/ albums. It is easier for them to get them for free.

How has it changed? At first the main way in which companies made profit was

through the purchase of CD’s. However now other factors have been introduced, for instance artists are able to go on tour, sell merchandise and market their product with more creative techniques. Furthermore, due to the ease of access with technology, it is simple and quicker for artists to make music, especially in a short amount of time. If an artist is liked by the audience they begin to develop fans, who then make it their mission to ensure the individual faces a high level of success. They will be then seen as a beneficial factor of the artists career.
