How do I `feel’ about this place?
• Using this aerial view of the children’s local area I introduced the idea that maps/aerial photos can be annotated to show a variety of things including information about how we feel in particular places.
I feel pleased if I can find my way into school
through the estate
I really enjoy the views of Wakefield that I can
see from the hill in Thornes Park
Gradually we zoomed in to look closely at the school and grounds
• We talked about how things have changed since this photograph was taken. We added extra detail onto the image using the Interactive Whiteboard tools.
This view of the school was obtained from Loc8 a website developed by the Yorkshire & Humberside Grid for Learning
Creating maps using Local Studies• Following this all children
were given hands-on access to the software programme Local Studies to create their personal maps of the school. (see PowerPoint 2) They imported an outline map as a background. This gave a framework onto which they could add further information.
Later in the Project
• Three boys used Quikmaps to explore their own personal geographies linked to place. Whereas Local Studies restricts the map to pre-selected boundaries Quikmaps opens up the world and it soon became apparent that these boys had added hotspots to places in the wider region. Something that would have been totally impossible using Local Studies.
