In order to attract and address my audience I had to find out who would be interested in my magazine and what social groups they were in and their dislikes and likes, their music tastes and other information. To find this out I created a questionnaire which I handed out to a variety of ages, genders and social lives to see the range of information. From this, I decided that late teens and early adults are interested in indie music which I think is due to the similarity in age. This magazine comes out on a monthly basis and is £2.50 which is a good price. NME, Q and Mojo range between £2 and £3 which is the same as mine and people would therefore be likely to spend their money on my magazine. I have created a picture of what my readers would be interested in.

This questionnaire reveals that older girls prefer the indie genre as younger girls are still into pop music, boys however naturally like rock and late teenagers prefer the indie genre which is most likely due to the similar ages of the artists and audience. Three quarters of these people said that they read magazines, these were the younger people which shows that my target audience is correct. The 14 year old girl said she would buy this magazine for £1.50 which isn’t surprising as she reads pop magazines which appeal to a younger generation and have to be relatively cheap so there is a lack of understanding of how sophisticated the genre is. Question seven shows that the audience liked the date information which I researched for my audience profiling, and also the information and articles. The question does show that people would buy my magazine which is good, the 14 year old girl said no to buying the magazine regularly which is logical as she doesn’t like the genre of music. The house style and the focus on indie artists differentiates my magazine from others which is good. This is apparent in the next question when asking what they like about the magazine. I think the contents information is very effective as it gives an insight to all of the magazine which seems to be liked by the people who are interested in the genre.

To create a magazine that fits in with the indie genre I had to challenge conventions of certain aspects such as the stereotypes of young adults and women as well as the use

of web 2.0 and the content of my articles. I have used dark colours as they are ‘grungey’ which contrast with the bright aquamarine and white which lightens the

magazine up whilst attracting the audience. The magazine shows lots of indie artists which is what the audience are interested in. The quirky contents layout has

connotations of unpredictability that corresponds to the genre. This is also present through the layout of the interview with Hallowed People. The clothing and presence of instruments also show what the genre is and gives an insight to who the audience

would be.

As you can see there is a prominent house style which is very eye catching. The main image is very dark and is taken in a rehearsal studio where the mise-en-scene shows the instruments of the band. It takes up half the page with space above and below the image which attracts the audience. It is important to include other images on the front page as it gives an insight on who is featured in the magazine. Originally I was only going to have the main image but thought it would be better to include more. This all attracts readers to the magazine and would be seen in most supermarkets.I have attracted an audience through Web 2.0 by creating a twitter and facebook page allowing digital natives to access information about the magazine.
