PLAYOFF NOTES

RUN AS ONE: This marks the 32nd time in 51 seasons that the Rockets have made the playoffs. Houston has made the postseason in six straight seasons after missing the playoffs in three straight seasons from 2009-10 through 2011-12. The current six-year streak of making the playoffs is one shy of tying for the longest in franchise history. All-time, Houston is 140-147 (.488) in the playoffs, including 89-54 (.622) at home and 51-93 (.354) on the road. ROUND TWO… FIGHT!: The Rockets have advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals for the third time over the past four seasons after doing so once over their previous nine playoff appearances from 1997-98 through 2013-14. Houston has played 14 second round series, winning six, including a 4-3 record dating back to 1994. The Rockets are 39-47 in the second round of the playoffs, including 23-19 at home and 16-28 on the road. WE’RE NUMBER ONE: Houston is the first seed in the Western Conference for 2018 NBA Playoffs and holds home court advantage throughout the playoffs by nature of recording the league’s best record during the regular season. Since the 16-team playoff format was adopted in 1983-84, this is the first time the Rockets have been the #1 seed. The #1 seed in either conference has gone onto win the championship 24 times since the 16-team format was installed in 1983-84, including each of the past five seasons. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED: The 15 players on the Rockets playoff roster appeared in a total of 590 playoff games entering this postseason, up from 325 heading into the 2017 playoffs. Four Rockets did not have any prior playoff experience: Tarik Black (4th season), Aaron Jackson (Rookie), Chinanu Onuaku (2nd season), and Zhou Qi (Rookie). Joe Johnson (115 games) has the most playoff experience for the Rockets, followed by James Harden (93), Trevor Ariza (89), Chris Paul (81), Nenê (78), Gerald Green (45), Ryan Anderson (38), Clint Capela (38), Luc Mbah a Moute (23), Eric Gordon (20), and P.J. Tucker (15). SO WE MEET AGAIN: This will be the eighth time the Rockets and Jazz have meet in the playoffs, with Utah winning five of the previous seven series: 2008 First Round, Utah won 4-2; 2007 First Round, Utah won 4-3; 1998 First Round, Utah won 3-2; 1997 Conference Finals, Utah won 4-2; 1995 First Round, Houston won 3-2; 1994 Conference Finals, Houston won 4-1; 1985 First Round Utah won 3-2. Entering this series, the Rockets were 18-21 against the Jazz in the playoffs, including 12-8 at home and 6-13 on the road. FIRST ROUND FINISH: Here are some team notes from the Rockets First Round series vs. Minnesota:

• The Rockets have advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals in three of the past four seasons… since winning the championship in back-to-back seasons in 1993-94 and 1994-95, Houston has made it to the conference finals twice (1996-97 and 2014-15).

• Dating back to the 2017 postseason, Houston is 10-6 in the playoffs after losing eight of its previous 10 playoff games (all against Golden State in the 2015 Western Conference Finals and the First Round of the 2016 playoffs).

• Houston has won 16 of its past 21 playoff games at Toyota Center, including all three games this postseason… the Rockets were 34-7 at home this season, including 20 straight wins from 1/10-4/5… that tied for the longest single season home winning streak in franchise history.

• The Rockets are 3-3 over their past six road games in the playoffs after losing seven in a row prior… Houston was 31-10 on the road during the regular season, marking the most road wins in a single season in franchise history… the 31 road wins also tied for the sixth-most in NBA history.

• Clint Capela, James Harden, and Chris Paul have played in all five games this postseason… during the regular season, the Rockets were 42-3 when that trio played together and outscored opponents by an average of 11.5 ppg… Houston lost Game 3 of the First Round at Minnesota by 16 points… the three losses the Rockets had during the regular season when Capela, Harden, and Paul played together were by a total of 11 points.

• Each of Houston’s final three wins in the First Round were by double-digits… the Rockets won three games by 10+ points in the 2017 playoffs… Houston won by double-digits a franchise-high 38 times during the regular season and outscored opponents by a league-best 8.5 ppg.

• The Rockets averaged 120.5 points (241 total) over the final two games of their First Round series vs. Minnesota after averaging 103.7 ppg the first three games… Houston was 43-5 when scoring 110+ points during the regular season and 22-12 when failing to do so… the Rockets averaged 106.3 ppg over the final 18 games of the season, down from 114.0 ppg the first 64 games… Houston is averaging 110.4 ppg this postseason.

• The Rockets scored FIFTY points in the third quarter of Game 4 of their First Round series vs. Minnesota on 4/23… that marked the second-most points in a single quarter in NBA playoff history (51 by the L.A. Lakers in the fourth quarter vs. Detroit on 3/31/62)… the Rockets scored 50+ points in a single quarter once during the regular season in franchise history (50 in fourth at Denver on 1/10/91).

• Houston held Minnesota to an average of 101.6 points during its First Round series… the Rockets were 50-8 when holding their opponent below 110 points during the regular season and 15-9 when failing to do so… from the start of January (47 games), Houston held opponents to 101.7 ppg, down from 106.9 ppg the first 35 games of the season.

• Houston was outshot in three of the five games during its First Round series and by 46.0% to 44.5% overall… the Rockets were 38-2 when outshooting their opponent during the regular season and 27-15 when failing to do so after going 14-25 in 2016-17.

• The Rockets shot 51.1% from the floor in Game 5 of their First Round series vs. Minnesota after shooting 41.6% the three games prior… Houston has won six straight playoff games when shooting 50.0% or better dating back to 2009… the Rockets were 43-5 when shooting 45.0% or better during the regular season, including 14-0 when shooting 50.0% or better.

• Houston allowed Minnesota to shoot 49.0% over the final three games of its First Round series after the Wolves shot 41.3% the first two games… during the regular season, Houston was 28-2 when holding its opponent below 45.0% shooting and 37-15 when failing to do so.

• The Rockets hit 15+ 3FGM in each of the past four games… that is tied for the longest streak in NBA playoff history (Cleveland from 5/2-5/8/16)… Houston had 15+ 3FGM in three of its 11 playoff games last season… the Rockets were 42-4 when having 15+ 3FGM during the regular season.

• Over the final three games of the First Round series vs. Minnesota, Houston shot 38.3% (49-128 3FGs) from 3-point range after shooting 29.2% the first two games (34.6% overall)… the Rockets shot 40.9% from behind-the-arc in Game 5 of the First Round… Houston was 19-2 when shooting 40.0% or better from downtown during the regular season.

• The Rockets held Minnesota to fewer than 10 3FGM in four of the five games during the First Round… Houston was 30-5 when holding the opposition below 10 3FGM in 2017-18… the Rockets held opponents to an average of 8.8 3FGM over the final 29 regular season games, down from 10.8 the first 53 games of the season.

• Over the final three games of the First Round, Minnesota shot 47.1% from 3-point range after shooting 31.7% the first two games of the series (41.3% overall)… over the final 29 games of the regular season, Houston held opponents to 31.2% shooting from behind-the-arc, down from 37.1% the first 53 games… the Rockets were 16-11 when opponents shot 40.0% or better from downtown in 2017-18.

• Houston averaged 6.0 more 3FGM per game than Minnesota during its First Round series… the Rockets led the NBA in 3-point differential in 2017-18 (+5.2 per).

• The Rockets attempted 49.3% of their shots from 3-point range in the First Round… Houston attempted 50.2% of its shots from behind-the-arc during the regular season, setting an NBA record… the Rockets had 52 3FGA in Game 2 of the First Round, breaking their own NBA playoff record of 50 set at San Antonio on 4/23/07… the Rockets attempted 50+ 3FGA 23 times over the past two seasons (rest of league has six games w/50+).

MORE TEAM PLAYOFF NOTES: •

• Houston had the same amount of FTA as Minnesota during its First Round series… the Rockets were second in the NBA in FTA differential (+5.5 per) during the regular season… Houston finished the regular season with just one fewer FTM than the opposition had FTA… the Rockets were 36-8 when having as many or more FTM as opponents had FTA in 2017-18.

• The Rockets shot 74.6% from the line during the First Round… Houston ranked ninth in the NBA in FT% during the regular season (78.1%; highest since shooting 78.2% in 2011-12).

• Houston was outrebounded by an average of 2.0 rpg during the First Round… the Rockets were 10th in rebounding differential (+1.5 per) during the regular season… Houston was 41-5 when outrebounding the opposition in 2017-18 and 24-12 when failing to do so.

• Houston averaged 6.20 blocks in the First Round and recorded 7+ blocks twice… the Rockets averaged 4.78 during the regular season and were 17-0 when having 7+ blocks and 14-9 when having 3 or fewer.

• The Rockets averaged 44.4 points in the paint during the First Round… Houston was 28th in points in the paint during the regular season (40.7 per) after ranking sixth (46.7 per) in 2016-17… the Rockets were 12-1 when scoring 50+ PIP in 2017-18, but only did so once over the final 17 games of the season.

• Houston allowed an average of 48.4 points in the paint during the First Round with Minnesota scoring 50+ in each of the final three games… Houston was actually 27-5 when allowing 50+ points in the paint during the regular season… the Rockets were 28th in points in the paint allowed during the regular season (48.0 per).

• The Rockets averaged 13.6 points off turnovers in the First Round… Houston was sixth in the NBA with 17.6 point off turnovers during the regular season after ranking second with 18.6 per game in 2016-17.

• Houston only allowed an average of 7.8 points off turnovers in the First Round (5.5 per in the four wins; 17 in the one loss)… he Rockets were 14th in points off turnovers allowed this season (15.8 per) after ranking 25th in 2016-17 (17.5 per)… opponents averaged 14.3 points off turnovers over the final 59 games, down from 19.6 the first 23 games of the season.

• The Rockets bench was outscored in four of the five games in the First Round and by an average of 6.2 points per game… oddly enough, Houston lost the only game in which its reserves outscored Minnesota’s (Game 3)… the Rockets were 29-3 when their reserves outscored the opponents bench during the regular season.

• James Harden averaged 29.0 points, 7.4 assists, 4.8 rebounds, 2.40 steals and 1.20 blocks in the First Round… in NBA playoff history, the only player to have averaged at least 29.0 ppg, 7.0 apg, 4.0 rpg, 2.00 spg and 1.00 bpg in a single postseason was Michael Jordan (twice in 1985 and 1991)… steals and blocks became official statistics in 1973-74.

• James Harden scored 22 of his game-high 36 points during the third quarter of Game 4… that set the playoff franchise record for the most points in a single quarter (previously 18 by Hakeem Olajuwon in the first quarter vs. Utah on 5/5/95 and by Harden in the first quarter at Golden State on 4/27/15)

• James Harden averaged 4.0 3FGM on 38.5% shooting in the First Round… he averaged 2.8 3FGM on 28.7% shooting in the previous two postseasons combined… Harden led the NBA with 265 3FGM during the regular season, which was the ninth-highest single season total in NBA history.

• James Harden had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.64 in the First Round and had nearly as many steals (12) as turnovers (14)… he had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.58 during the 2017 playoffs… Harden ranked seventh in the NBA with 1.75 spg in 2017-18.

• Chris Paul averaged 19.0 points on 48.7% shooting in the First Round… he entered this postseason averaging 21.4 ppg on 48.4% shooting for his playoff career… entering this postseason, Paul was one of 13 players in NBA playoff history with at least 75 games played to have averaged at least 20.0 ppg while shooting 48.0% or better from the floor… LeBron James was the only other active player on that list.

• Since having 4 assists with 6 turnovers in Game 1 of the First Round, Chris Paul has 29 assists with 3 turnovers over the past four games… he also has more steals (10) than turnovers (9) this postseason … Paul ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.57) during the regular season and was 11th with 1.66 spg… he has the most assists and steals of any active player (regular season).

• Clint Capela averaged 15.8 points, 14.2 rebounds and 2.00 blocks in 31.1 minutes per game in the First Round… no player in NBA history has averaged at least 15.0 ppg, 14.0 rpg and 2.00 bpg in fewer than 32.0 mpg in a single postseason… Capela had 42 double-doubles in 74 games played during the regular season after having 25 his first three seasons combined.

• Clint Capela scored 20+ points twice during the First Round… Houston was 25-2 when he scored 15+ points during the regular season, including 12-0 when he scored 20+… Capela grabbed 15+ rebounds three times in the First Round… he had 15+ boards 11 times in 2017-18 after doing so once his first three seasons combined.. Capela had 3+ blocks twice in the First Round… Houston was 21-0 when he had 3+ blocks in the regular season.

• Eric Gordon averaged 17.3 points over the final three games of the First Round after scoring a total of 16 points the first two games of the series… he averaged 18.0 ppg during the regular season (highest average since 2011-12)… Gordon averaged 3.3 3FGM on 38.5% shooting over the final three games after shooting 3-of-17 from behind-the-arc the first two games… he shot 43.5% from 3-point range post All-Star break (33.4% prior).

• Trevor Ariza averaged 15.5 points on 42.9% shooting over the final two games of the First Round after averaging 8.0 ppg on 32.0% shooting the first three games... he has hit 2+ 3FGM in each of the past four games… Ariza averaged a career-high 2.5 3FGM during the regular season… he has 6 steals with just one turnover this postseason; he led the NBA in steal-to-turnover ratio in 2017-18 (1.88).

• P.J. Tucker had a playoff career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting (5-7 3FGs) in Game 5 of the First Round after having a total of 16 points on 5-of-20 shooting (4-16 3FGs) the first four games… Houston was 15-2 when he scored in double-figures during the regular season and 29-2 when he hit 2+ 3FGM… Tucker averaged 1.9 3FGM on 40.6% shooting over the final 34 games of the regular season.

• Gerald Green is averaging 8.0 points and 5.2 rebounds in 18.4 minutes per game this postseason… he had playoff career-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds in 26 minutes of play in Game 2… it marked the second double-double (regular season and playoffs) of Green’s career… Green averaged 7.5 ppg in 14.8 mpg in 13 games with seven starts for Boston during the 2017 NBA playoffs.

• Ryan Anderson has appeared in each of the past three games after missing the first two games of the postseason with a left ankle sprain… he is shooting 5-of-11 from 3-point range this postseason… Anderson shot 44.1% from 3-point range over his final 23 games played during the regular season after shooting 36.6% his first 43 games played… the Rockets were 18-1 when he had 3+ 3FGM in 2017-18 and 11-1 when he scored 15+.

SEASON NOTES

A TRADITION LIKE FEW OTHERS: Houston has gone .500 or better in each of the past 12 seasons, joining San Antonio as the only teams to have done so. The Rockets have the second-best winning percentage (.615; 595-373 mark) of any team over that span. Dating back to 1984-85, Houston has gone .500 or better in 31 of 34 seasons. No other team has done so more in than 29 seasons (San Antonio and Utah) over that span. 65!: The Rockets finished the season with a 65-17 mark, breaking the previous franchise record of 58 wins in a single season set in 1993-94. This marked the first time Houston finished a season with the league’s best record. The 65 wins were tied for the 18th-most in NBA history. Here are some other statistical odds and ends from the season:

• In addition to finishing with the league’s best record, Houston captured its sixth division title in franchise history and its second over the past four seasons after not having any the 20 seasons prior.

• The Rockets had three winning streaks of at least 11 games… according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rockets were the sixth team to have three winning streaks of at least 10 games in a single season… the last was San Antonio in the lockout shortened 66-game season in 2011-12.

• Houston went 38-6 over the final 44 games after going 2-7 the nine games prior from 12/20-1/6… the Rockets won 17 in a row from 1/28-3/7 (second-longest streak in franchise history).

• The Rockets were 42-3 when Clint Capela, James Harden, and Chris Paul played together (lost by two points at New Orleans on 1/26, by three at Toronto on 3/9, and by six to Oklahoma City on 4/7) and 23-14 when they didn’t… Houston outscored opponents by 11.5 ppg in the 45 games that trio played together.

• Houston was 34-7 at home this season, including 20 straight wins from 1/10-4/5… that tied for the longest single season home winning streak in franchise history (first 20 home games in 1985-86)… the Rockets have won 30+ home games in four of the past five seasons after doing so four times the 22 seasons prior.

• The Rockets went 18-5 over its final 23 road games, including a season-high 10 straight wins from 2/1-3/7, after losing four of five on the road from 12/25-1/6…the 10-game road winning streak was the second-longest in franchise history (12 from 1/4-3/12/08), Houston was 31-10 on the road this season… the 31 road wins this season are the most in franchise history and tied for the sixth-most in NBA history.

• Houston won both of its overtime games this season (vs. LAL on 12/31; vs. DET on 3/22)… it marked the first time the Rockets had fewer than three overtime games in a single season since having one in 2007-08.

HEAD COACH MIKE D’ANTONI

Mike D’Antoni [dan-TONE-ee] is in his second season as head coach of the Houston Rockets. He has over a quarter of a century of coaching experience, including 14 seasons as a head coach in the NBA with a career mark of 575-470 (.550) in the regular season and 36-39 (.480) in the playoffs. D’Antoni picked up his 500th win at Chicago on March 10, 2017, becoming the 30th coach in NBA history to accomplish that feat. Last season, D’Antoni was named NBA Coach of the Year after guiding the Rockets to a 55-27 mark after Houston went 41-41 in 2015-16. He became the eighth coach in league history to win multiple Coach of the Year awards, and joins Gregg Popovich as the only ones who are active. D’Antoni’s first Coach of the Year award came after leading Phoenix to a franchise-high tying 62 wins in 2004-05. Over a four season span from 2004-05 through 2007-08, the Suns compiled a 232-96 (.707) mark, including back-to-back trips to the Western Conference Finals in 2005 and 2006. In addition, D’Antoni served a pair of three-year assignments for USA Basketball as an assistant coach on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff, highlighted with gold medal performances in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. USA Basketball National Teams posted a 49-1 mark with D’Antoni on staff. A dual citizen of the U.S. and Italy, D’Antoni enjoyed tremendous success as both a player and a coach in the Italian League, capturing numerous titles in both endeavors. Prior to embarking on his international career, D’Antoni spent parts of four seasons playing in the NBA and ABA during the mid-70’s.
