A CULINARY KITCHEN…IT’S ABOUT THYME

When CulinaryThymes.com website publisher Alyce Eyster wasready to redesign and remodel her kitchen, she called on herfriends at Kitchen & Bath Concepts to assemble and lead a team

of professionals to plan and produce her dream kitchen. KBC’s MicquiMcGowen CMKBD, (Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer), workedwith Eyster to design a space that eliminated the “jammed up” areas, resultingin a more efficient food and traffic flow, much more countertop space andbetter storage.

Alyce’s culinary interests, both professional and personal, deserved an excep-tional kitchen. A true “foodie”, she writes about food, teaches cooking, andloves cooking and entertaining at home, especially since the completion of thenew kitchen. The redesigned kitchen is bigger, brighter and all-around better. The new floor plan is much more functional, and flows well for large or smallgroups, and especially for their active family of four, plus pets. Hard-workingstainless steel pro-type appliances, two sinks, two dishwashers, ample storagespace and large no-maintenance Silestone countertops all make this newkitchen a joy to work in. Simple lines of the BrookHaven cabinetry with slen-der chrome handles, combined with beautiful linear glass backsplash tiles cre-ate a calm transitional design statement for this modern kitchen in an estab-lished home.

Kitchen & Bath Concepts’ approach to every project is a comfortable, col-laborative process between client, designer, and the project team, where gen-uine listening occurs, ideas are shared, and plans are developed, combiningexperienced knowledge, expert craftsmanship, and beautiful materials. Theproject team includes the contractor, suppliers and other trades involved. Thisapproach always generates the best results for the client and the most satisfac-tion for the team.

Talmadge Hargraves was the general contractor for the Eyster kitchen. Hehas worked with KBC for over 20 years creating beautiful projects and happyclients. His scope of work includes new home construction, additions andmajor remodels. Talmadge says he “appreciates the level of design detail andprofessionalism of the KBC designers.”

David Gardner, of ICM Marble & Granite provided fabrication and instal-lation of Silestone countertops in the kitchen. David also has a long history ofcollaboration with Kitchen & Bath Concepts. ICM has been in the stonebusiness over 25 years, has a full-service showroom, and also works with othercountertop materials like the “Yukon” Silestone in Eyster’s kitchen.

Brookhaven cabinets by Wood-Mode were designed and ordered by KBCfor the kitchen and bar area in two contrasting finishes—painted white for thekitchen, with a dark “Java” stain on cherry for the bar area. Alyce loves the pre-cision-quality construction and beautiful long-lasting finish of her factory-manufactured cabinets. Here’s what she says about the experience:

“To say that we are thrilled with our new kitchen would be an understate-ment. The improved flow enhances cooking and entertaining and the kitchencertainly generates its share of wows. It is so satisfying to see the culminationof the efforts of many that went into this project. We are grateful to haveworked with some amazing folks. And the final product is better than we evercould have imagined.”

before && after

Kathy Long called me after following my column in Houston House & Home. She thought my advice seemed practical. “Every day I walked into our masterbath and thought, ‘I really don’t like this wallpaper.’ It was not a good way to startthe day,” she smiled. “My husband lived in fear that he would come home oneday and find me ripping off wallpaper or banging out floor tile,” she laughed.

TIP: Paint gives a lot of bang for the buck.“As long as we were confused, we did nothing,” she said. With three kids in

out-of-state colleges Kathy and Michael also needed a master plan they couldfollow. She loved the visit because there were several small projects that shecould quickly complete to freshen up her home. After our meeting, she had

comprehensive notes with exact measurements, products, contractorsand a budget for the renovation. “I took your notes to the paint store tobuy paint the same day,” she explained. “One of your suggestions thatstays with me is the recommendation for good granite seams.Everywhere I now go I look at granite seams—I cannot help it!”TIP: In a slab house, if you don’t move bath drains, you can save alot of money.

The basic floor plan worked and the room just needed cosmeticupdates. After interviewing contractors, Kathy hired Les Albin of LaconHomes to do the work. She said that visualizing the finished look of thetile was difficult for her. “We went from an 8 x 8” floor tile to an 18 x18” floor tile and a larger 13 x 13” tub surround tile. While you can laya piece of tile down and get an idea, it is difficult to visualize how it willlook. I decided just to trust your recommendations on the sizes andheights because I felt like we were on the same page right away and thatyou were able to articulate my concerns even though I was not able tocommunicate them very effectively!” Kathy explained.Kathy advised when undertaking a remodeling to be prepared for unex-pected problems and modifications to the plan. She explained that when

the plumber removed theshower’s P-trap it wasclogged full of concrete.“He said he is not sure how it even drained!” Kathy said. She also said itis easy to say, ‘while we are at it, let’s do X, Y and Z’, which can blow abudget fast!

TIP: Take control of your project and order everything in advance soevery item you are responsible for is there when the contractor sayshe can start your project, Kathy says.

“With our tile, we learned the hard way that items can be discontinuedand promised delivery timelines don’t always happen, so don’t wait untilthe last moment,” she said. Items also can arrive broken so allow plentyof time to reorder or return, Kathy advised.

Kathy said her friends and family are jealous of her bath and areinspired by the room’s simplicity.

“Since we are keeping resale in mind, we knew it needed to be neutralbut not boring. It is such a treat to walk into the bathroom each

Anyone who has driven along Memorial Drivewest of Loop 610 has no doubt admired thelush canopy of native oaks and pines that cov-

ers this largely residential region of the city. Localbuilder and residential developer Chris Cunningham ofCunningham Development has built a multitude ofcustom homes in the Memorial area over the past threedecades.

Last year, Cunningham Development collaboratedwith architect Patrick Berrios of Patrick BerriosDesigns to construct a new home with elements of tra-ditional design that would blend well with the long-established neighborhood.

“I had previously designed a similar home in HedwigVillage a few years back and I decided I wanted to do asimilar, but larger home on this property in HuntersCreek,” says Chris Cunningham, of CunninghamDevelopments. “That’s when I asked Patrick Berrios todesign this house. We also took inspiration from homesin Aspen and Vail, Colorado.”

Cunningham took this opportunity to bring in thelatest and greatest features in one beautiful home. “Wealso emphasized energy efficiency throughout thedesign and build out,” says Cunningham. “This result-ed in the home’s energy efficiency score beating therequirements for an Energy Star rating, meaning it isabout 40 percent more efficient than average homes ofthis size and type.”

Cunningham Development worked with Jane Page Design Group on this Memorial-area showcase home. The traditional architecture by Patrick Berrios Designs was given a classic, yet mod-ern treatment by Laura Litton of JPDG. Here, the colorful abstract painting by LeeAnne Domangue provides a vibrant touch amongst the cool colors of the living room.

Cunningham turned to Jane Page Design Group to finishout the interiors, with JPDG’s Laura Litton taking the leadon developing an interior design that would appeal to a broadrange of buyers. All of the design efforts of the builder, archi-tect and interior design team culminated nicely, as the home, built as a showcase house, sold to a family moving toHouston from out-of-state even before it was opened to thepublic for touring.

DESIGNER’S TOUCH

Designer Laura Litton joined the project after constructionhad begun, but helped the builder make subtle refinementsthat allowed the home’s interiors to complement the architec-ture and enhance the overall aesthetics of the home. Sincethis was a new home that had been built in a well-established,older neighborhood, it was important to incorporate tradi-tional elements both inside and out.

ABOVE: The front of the home features the formal dining room andthe study. The paneling below the chair rail in the dining room com-plements the look of the fully paneled study. Richly hued artworkfrom Nolan Rankin Galleries stands out on the pale grey upper half ofthe walls. The antique English table and chairs are from Joyce HornAntiques.

OPPOSITE: In the study the traditional paneled walls are treated witha grey wash, rather than dark brown stain, for a more modern look. The ample windows bring in plenty of natural light to brighten up thedark wood and leather antique furniture.

Litton’s design approach for the entire house was to use a com-bination of old and new to yield a buyer-friendly home thatwould speak to people who prefer traditional, as well as thosewho are drawn to a more modern look. Most rooms feature aneutral palate, but include a variety of textures and materials foradded visual interest.

“We used antiques in almost every room, but the house doesn’tlook old fashioned,” says Litton.

In the breakfast room, FrenchBentwood chairs, a gate-leg table and atapestry-backed bench provide ahomey, traditional spot for coffee andcasual meals. This inviting corner spotadds Old World comfort to the mostlywhite, kitchen, which features a blendof traditional shapes and styling in amodern color palette and current, butclassic materials.

Another technique Litton employedwas to insert leaded glass into the all-white kitchen cabinet doors. “Whilethe design of the glasswork is simpleand less ornate than antique leadedglass, it still lends and old-fashionedfeel to the kitchen,” says Litton.

In the living areas and bedrooms, lively, contemporary artwork brings acurrent vibe, without dominating thedécor. “Designing a showcase home isfun, but challenging,” says Litton.“You get to be the client in a sense, and select the materials that you want, but you do have to fit the builder’sbudget.” For this home Litton wasexcited to use the newly launchedbacksplash tile behind the cooktop andto be able to introduce local artistLeanne Domangue to everyone whoviewed the home.

The generous master suite includes agrand, well-appointed master bath,

“We’ve had manycalls about thekitchen and masterbath in this homefrom all types ofpeople in all ageranges.”— LAURA LITTON,

The same Sherwin Williams paint, SW7058 Magnetic Gray, covers many of the walls throughout the home. In the kitchen, Talila granite countertops from Omni Surfaces combine withTravertine tile on the vent hood and unique interlocking ceramic tile backsplash (both from Materials Marketing) to provide neutral color with visual texture. The traditional white cabinetsfeature simple, not-too-ornate leaded glass accents, while the stainless light fixtures help the appliances fit into the whole picture.

which features a linear layout that extends beneath a dra-matic barrel ceiling. An elegant footed bathtub, surroundedby elegant detailing, serves as a focal point that draws theeye into the space. This bath not only includes his and hervanities, but also his and her toilets. A steam shower, twoclosets and an exercise room round out the features of theluxurious bath.

OPPOSITE: In the breakfast nook, the antique table with bench andbentwood chairs sit atop a Matt Cameron Rug, perfect for lingeringover the wrap-around views of the expansive back yard. The charm-ing space also connects to the living room.

BENEFITS OF GOOD DESIGN

“When working with clients, they have specific designparameters that you must adhere to, along with their budg-et, so we work to balance the costs with the level of styleimpact for each room,” says Litton.

In contrast, Litton says that working on a showcase homerequires the designer to develop a home’s personality so itwill be relatable to potential buyers and/or future clients.“We’ve had many calls about the kitchen and master bath inthis home from all types of people in all age ranges,” saysLitton. “It’s a great opportunity for a designer, because it

allows current and future clients to see what you can do.” Litton explains that one of the greatest skills designers

have is the ability to visualize a finished project before iteven exists, noting that designers can also save clients a lotof time and money with their knowledge.

“Designers help clients avoid headaches, and often serveas a translator between the builder or architect and thehomeowner,” says Litton. “Another major role is to helpcouples with individual tastes successfully marry their stylestogether. It’s a very personal process and we view it as aprivilege.”

OPPOSITE: The master bath features white Carrara marble, which is quite popular now, but is atimeless choice. Appliances for ENTERTAINING

As more and more home cooks embrace theirinner celebrity chef, catalogs and websites fill ourheads with visions of countertop dynamos andinnovative major appliances designed to maxi-mize food storage, prep, cooking and clean up.

Whether it’s the holiday season or any festive occasion havingappliances that are well-suited to your cooking needs can help homechefs do more, serve more and relish the whole process.

KEEP COOL It seems that the centerpiece in every “dream kitchen” featured inmagazines, sweepstakes emails and home renovation shows is agleaming stainless steel refrigerator. A stainless exterior is onething, but it’s what’s inside that makes a cook’s dreams come true. Top things to consider are the amount of space for a refrigerator inyour kitchen, the appliance’s capacity, and, of course, your budget.Recent innovations include movable shelves and bins, space-effi-cient racks for bottles and cans and alarms that sound when doorsare left open. Also important to note is the unit’s energy efficiency, because refrigerators are on all day and night.

Refrigerator drawers are a great option for homeowners whodo a lot of entertaining. These are handy for stocking with bev-erages for parties and get togethers. Under-counter icemakersare also practical when you’re serving a high volume of drinks.

Wine enthusiasts relish having their whites and reds chilledappropriately. Gourmet cooks can usually find space for a small8-12-bottle unit or carve out a spot for a 30-100-plus unit. Aswith a standard refrigerator, look for a unit that fits your space, holds the capacity of bottles you desire and fits your budget. Also consider convenient features, such as dual zones for whitesand reds, pull-out shelves and tempered glass doors.

HOT STUFF Feeding the masses in your home requires ample cookingcapacity. Whether you choose a separate cooktop or a tradition-al range, look for a large capacity cooktop with 5, 6 or even 8burners to turn out multiple dishes at once. Keep in mind thatsmooth-surface electric cooktop clean up quickly and easily, butif you gotta have gas, look for one with an all-in-one grate that liftswith just one motion for faster clean up than with individual

ABOVE & BELOW: The GE Café double oven allows home cooks the versa-tility and convenience that comes with preparing lots of food simultaneously.Double-oven chefs can prepare an elegant five-course meal all at once, feeda large party, cook a week’s worth of meals in one day, or easily satisfy multi-ple tastes and diet requirements in one sitting.

grates. These commercial-style cooking surfacesoften include a griddle and/or a oversized burnerfor added flexibility and capacity.

Most serious home cooks swear by a doubleoven—for two times the output. Wall ovens cantake up space, but they do put the oven doors ata handy height, compared to a space-savingrange with a double oven. Convection ovens fea-ture a fan in the back of the unit, which circulatesheated air to cook more evenly and about 25percent faster than a traditional oven. Manymicrowaves can now double as a convectionoven, which gives the functionality of two quick-cooking appliances in one small package.

And finally, even the most talented home chefstruggles occasionally to have everything done atthe same time, warming drawers provide theperfect spot to keep hot foods in a holding pat-tern before service.

FAR LEFT: ASKO manufacturers extra-tall tub dishwashers withTouchProof stainless steel which has a thin clear coat-ing that repels smudges from its surfaces. It does notin any way change the look of the steel itself, so it fitsin perfectly with any existing stainless appliances.

LEFT: GE’s Hybrid Stainless Steel dishwasher makesloading silverware and small items easy with two bas-kets and dedicated silverware jets. It also affords theconvenience of washing dishes and silverware in justthe upper or lower rack.

CLEANING UP

After all the fun and fabulous flavors have beenshared, the dishes must be dealt with. The aver-age dishwasher with a standard-size interior tubfits about 12 five-piece place settings. If youentertain large groups frequently, consider adishwasher (or two) with an extra-tall tub, whichtypically does about 14 place settings and caneasily handle large stockpots, vases, and cookiesheets.

DREAM Weavers Experts Help You Make Sense of a Kitchen Makeover

Anyone who’s renovated or remodeled knowsthat the process is often lengthy and complex.Contractors. Blueprints. Decisions. And if you’re remodeling a kitchen, the experience can be evenmore frustrating; if you remodel a bathroom, you likely have anotherone you can use in the meantime. Remodeling a kitchen however, can take yours out of commission, creating havoc and stress.

HIRING A KITCHEN DESIGNERExperts in kitchen design offer their advice and share their experi-ence on how to make the process as painless as possible, puttingyou into a new space with minimal construction headaches.

Ric Trahan of Shelf Genie and Cabinet Cures, suggests thinkingabout your space and what you want it to do. It’s not just about hav-ing a kitchen with all the usual appliances and amenities. It’s abouthaving a space that functions as optimally as possible.

“When you tell us how you use your kitchen, we canhelp you minimize the frustration of a remodel,” Trahansays. “We want to understand where you keep things, howyou reach for things, so we can be sure we’re designingyour space to be as accessible as possible.”

In addition to working with customers who may wanttheir kitchens made over to accommodate physical handi-caps, Trahan says he and his team also help people thinkabout things like how they might be bending over to getthis or that cooking accessory or reaching overhead to grabsomething else. He says it’s important to consider whereyou keep the most-used items in your kitchen, so he andhis team can design pullout shelves or enhance your cabi-nets to create an optimal experience.

“We help people think through the way they use theirkitchen,” he says.

A GUIDE FOR THE JOURNEYExperienced kitchen designers put a lot of effort into the processof accessing and planning out a kitchen project. It’s often said thatusing a designer in the first place is one of the best things you cando—precisely because designers can work with you to determinehow you want your kitchen to work, and can brainstorm with youover what’s possible within your space.

“You really want a professional to help you through theprocess,” says Mary Calvin, of Restyle Kitchen and Bath. Her com-pany assists homeowners with refacing and resurfacing cabinets togive their kitchens a new look, and she also owns Cabinet

Innovations, which creates custom cabinets. “We understandwhere the pitfalls to a project can be, and we work with you toavoid them,” she says. “When you’re dealing with homeremodeling, every mistake you make costs money.”

Calvin says she works with clients to discover what they wantin their remodel. Maybe it’s something as simple as revampingoutdated cabinet facings. Or, it might be something more com-plex, like building custom cabinets and spaces that are a totalre-do of the existing space. She encourages would-be remodel-ers to meet with designers, to look at photos and share theirideas of what they need, noting that sometimes it takes severalmeetings to discover the right look and the right game plan tomake it happen.

“It’s important to explore all your options, from layout tofunctionality, even to price and accoutrements,” says JohnJohnston of Designer Kitchens, who started out as a cabinet-maker and has grown his business to include custom cabinetryand custom kitchen design. “We want to ensure our clientsnever look at a finished project and say, ‘Oh, I wish I’d done fill-in-the-blank, instead.’”

To that end, Johnston works with clients to determine thescale of a particular project, and sets us meetings to show themwhat they should expect from their design concepts and how tomake those into reality. He emphasizes that even he usesexperts to help with the pieces of the project he doesn’t do, likeinterior design, or sourcing the appliances you want. But beforehe gets to that point, he wants you to be able to look at designplans and say, “Yes, this is my perfect kitchen.”

“That’s when we know we’ve finished the design process, and we can start helping you implement it,” he says.

“Your kitchen is such a valuable piece of real estate in yourhome,” says Trahan. “And experts can truly help you maximizethat space to its fullest potential, whether it’s putting drawerscloser to the stove so you have easy access to cooking utensilsor finding better storage for things like waffle irons or mixersthat you only use every once in a while.”

ASK QUESTIONS

All the experts emphasize that you have every right to ask ques-tions about the process and about what you want.

“You should always ask to see someone’s work,” says RickDavis of DC Kitchen and Bath. “Whether you’re asking for photosof past projects or visiting their showroom to see how they’reworking and what they’re making.” That helps you determine iftheir style and yours are a good fit.

Davis says he also asks a lot of questions of his clients, helpingthem to consider the sorts of materials they might want to use, from the color stain they may like on a cabinet to whether they

Above all, though, ourexperts emphasize that you canhave a good time, if you don’t tryto go it alone.

“It really doesn’t have to be anightmare,” emphasizes Calvin.“You really can enjoy theprocess.”

KITCHEN+BATH Planning Guide

Good planning makes fora great kitchen or bath.

WORKBOOK DECIDE YOUR GOALSWhy do you want to remodel your home? Number your reasons inorder of importance, with 1 being most important, 13 being least.

I need more space for storageI have plenty of space but it’s inefficiently arranged. I need more lighting/windows.I’ve never liked my countertops and want new ones.A major appliance/fixture is broken, so I may as well go aheadand redo the whole room.My family is growing with more children/grandchildren and Iwant space for them. The flooring is cracked/warped/peeling, and I need a new floor. My health status has changed, and I need everything moreaccessible.l have pets and want a place to feed them and keep their petfood handy.I need more wiring for electrical appliances.I’m a techie and would like my kitchen to accomodate my elec-tronics and digital devices. It looks dated, I’m tired of it, and I simply want to change thelook of the room.Other reason: _______________

What, if anything, would you like to keep? Number items in orderof importance with 1 being most important, 8 being least.

color of the wallsappliancescabinetrylightingfloorssinkfurniture, such as an heirloom table or chairsthe vintage or period look of the room so it complements therest of the house

THINK OF THE FUTURE How long do you plan to live in your house? Check one.

Less than a year. I’m remodeling for resale.2 to 5 years. Then I plan to move and/or upgrade to a new larg-er house.6 to 20 years. Then I may downsize to a condo or high-rise.20-plus years. I don’t plan to move from this house.

SET YOUR BUDGETWhat’s the total amount you are willing to spend? Check one.

Under $10,000$10,000 - $50,000$50,000 - $100,000$100,000 or more

Once you’ve set a budget, ask your designer or contractor for arealistic estimate of how much the remodel might cost. Determineyour priorities so you know where to spend your money. What areyour must-haves in the room? What can you live without? If you’reseeking a home equity loan for the remodel, don’t close on theloan until you know how much the entire project is going to cost.

Take the time to decide what you want, hire aprofessional who has experience and training inkitchen and bath design, determine a budgetand go for it. Use this workbook to help narrowyour choices, and then give it to your designer orcontractor so they can help you turn your dreamsand ideas into reality.

KitchensOne of the best things todo when planning aremodeling project is tokeep a list of likes anddislikes from the spaceyou are currently using. It sounds simple … and it is. Make a

pros and cons list; it will help create

a solid starting point to expand on.

Incorporate things you like from

your current space and find solutions

for the things you dislike about your

space. Once the foundation of the

design is created you can add in the

details.

— Ashley Scherch, Interior Designer,

Cabinets and Designs, Inc.

Without a doubt, the veryfirst thing anyone should dobefore beginning any sort ofhome project is to talk withthe professionals. Even if you are a do-it-yourselfer, a con-

versation with those who have had a lot

of experience will save you from making

big mistakes which will cost you money!

Two areas I feel that make a huge dif-

ference in a kitchen or bath design are

the tile and lighting. For any wet area, I

prefer porcelain. Porcelain is virtually maintenance free and always

gives you a clean look. Lighting will make or break your room. Good

lighting is essential to any work area and mood lighting can do magic!

— Kathy Anderson, Eklektik Interiors, Owner and Principle Designer

TRADE SECRETSBefore you begin a remodelingor new construction projecttake note of these expert tipsfrom local pros

The space next to the refrigera-tor used to be wall and basecabinets where the countertoponly gathered paper and dust. They truly disliked the set-upthere. The solution was to createit into a full-height storage area:half for pantry use, half fordish/cooking materials.

LightingWhen select-ing lightingfor a newhome or aremodelingproject, homeownersshould beaware of spe-cific styles, finishes andfunctionalityof the light-ing fixturethey are buy-ing. For instance,

a kitchen island fix-

ture needs to pro-

vide good down-

ward task lighting,

whereas a break-

fast room or for-

mal dining room

chandelier could

be more of an esthetic purchase. The most renovated room

in a home is the kitchen. And now that kitchens are the main

gathering place, lighting fixtures can accentuate fine finishes

such as granite, cabinetry and high-end appliances. Making

the kitchen more of an entertaining place than a utilitarian

space.

Bathrooms are the second most renovated room in a

home. From beautiful crystal chandeliers over a bathtub to

functional bath sconces over the vanities, there are several

finishes and styles that coordinate with today's plumbing

hardware and new stone/granite surfaces.

Don’t overlook the importance of qualitylight bulbs when planning your next kitchenor bath project. Look for light bulbs that have earned

the ENERGY STAR rating. They use 5% less energy than a tra-

ditional incandescent bulb and lasts at least 6 times longer.

They also produce about 75% less heat, so it’s safer to oper-

ate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.

— Chris Couvillion, Sales Manager,

Ferguson Enterprises Houston

BathroomsAs the population gets oldermore and more people areadding elements to theirhome that will increase theirlifespan in their home. Walk-in

tubs are becoming a very popular option.

They not only allow people to get in and

out of the bath safely they also bring a

therapy spa right in your home. They fit

right into the current tub space and are

full of incredible options."

— Larry Closs, New Bath

When choosing a framelessglass shower enclosure con-sider ShowerGuard protect-ed glass. With the investment you

have made in beautiful new tiled walls

you do not want water soap and water

stains forming on the glass causing an

unsightly appearance. Unlike spray-on

or wipe-on treatments that eventually

wear off, the protection provided by

ShowerGuard glass is part of the glass

itself, so it never needs to be reapplied.

That means your shower stays beautiful,

shower after shower, year after year.
