Greg LeBlanc and Mike Cox worked

with architect Charles Todd Helton to

design an inviting modern home with a

subtle lodge appeal. LeBlanc and Cox

shared many ideas and lively discus-

sions with the architect throughout the

collaborative design process.

Page 8: Houston House & Home Magazine June 2012 Issue

Our cover feature developed

after Architect Charles

Todd Helton contacted

me about a remarkable home he had

designed for a couple on a very desir-

able block near Memorial Park and

Bayou Bend. Little did he know that

I had already toured this home dur-

ing the 2011 Modern Home Tour.

The architecture made quite an

impression on me, even after viewing

several other homes on the tour that

day. In addition to the architecture

tour, the home was also featured on

2011’s ASID Kitchen & Bath Tour

for the extraordinary kitchen, master

bath and multiple guest baths.

I was delighted to hear from own-

ers Greg Leblanc and Mike Cox, as

well as the architect, that a major

inspiration for the look of the home

was the dramatic glass and stone

house featured at the end of the

1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller,

North by Northwest. There are several

blogs on houses from the movies – I

encourage you to search online to see

images and read about this fascinat-

ing and fictitious structure known as

the Vandamm House.

If Jerry B. Smith’s photos from

our home feature have you craving a

waterfall or fountain in your own

landscape, then dive into our piece

on water features. We’ve also cooked

up a fun article on building a great

outdoor kitchen. Local experts share

their tips for a successful outdoor

kitchen project – everything from

components to configuration.

While you and your family are

enjoying the outdoors, keep an eye

on the weather and be sure to do

your hurricane prep, including mak-

ing sure your home is ready should a

fierce storm head our way this year.

Read up on readiness in this issue

and head to the Hurricane

Workshop on June 9. Have a safe

summer!

StormStrategies Summertime is the season of sun and fun, but residentsand local officials alike know that the warm weather fuelsthe often-intense storms of hurricane season. It onlytakes one hurricane or tropical storm to wreck havoc onour lives and homes in the form of high winds, fallingtrees, flying debris, torrential rains and high water.

“We’re forecasting a 60-percent chance of a tropical storm or hurri-cane making landfall during the 2012 Hurricane Season,” says JillHasling, certified consulting meteorologist and president of theWeather Research Center in Houston. “Homeowners along the GulfCoast from Louisiana to Key West, Florida and along the Georgia toNorth Carolina coast should be especially vigilant this year in prepar-ing for storms since these are the geographic areas we believe will seethe most activity.”

Each June, city and county officials do their best of help citizensstay safe. Whether you chooses to “hunker in place” or ride out thestorm elsewhere, its best of avoid damages to your home. Your home isyour biggest investment, and protecting your home’s exterior, fortifyingwindows, securing a back-up power supply and doing preventive main-tenance on trees can go a long way toward keeping your home out ofharm's way. And while you may not be able to stop rising water fromentering your home, you can assure recovery from a major washout bypurchasing flood insurance.

WINDOW WISDOM During major storms, high winds can hurl otherwise harmless objectsdirectly at your home’s windows. If you haven’t installed the latest,wind-resistant windows and their seal is not completely intact, thenyour home may be vulnerable to high winds. Remember that a

Andersen's Coastal Windows with Stormwatch protection fulfills insurance requirements while maintaining the beauty of your home with no need for shutters or service companies.

Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds over 74 mph, while a tropicalstorm may only have sustained winds up to 73 mph, they can have spo-radic wind gusts that are much stronger.

Upgrading to high wind-resistant windows is a smart move and canprotect your home from such weather extremes, as well as improve yourhome’s energy efficiency. Look for windows made with energy-efficient,impact-resistant glass. The best choices are those with performance ratingsthat meet or exceed local code requirements.

If installing new windows isn’t an option, there are window-shieldingproducts that can provide a temporary, but tough barrier for windows. Thesevere storms of recent decades have resulted in innovations for windowprotection, such as incredibly strong, yet flexible window mesh, known ashurricane fabric.

“Our hurricane fabric products are designed to prevent catastrophicfailure of your home during a hurricane,” says Richard Paulson of A Touchof Class, an Authorized Dealer/Installer of AstroGuard and AstroFlex. “Ina hurricane, your home acts like an airplane wing, the wind hits yourhome and goes up over it thus creating low pressure or lift above it. If awindow or door is compromised, the high pressure rushes in and can takeyour roof with it, causing catastrophic failure.”

Hurricane fabric is a proven alternative to boarding up windows can bevery cost effective at approximately $8 to $10 per square foot installed, according to Paulson. He says that after initial installation, hurricane fabriccan be re-deployed by anyone who can use a screwdriver. “Both AstroFlexand AstroGuard block 97 percent of wind and rain and are rated to with-stand a category 5 hurricane. These products come with storage bags orcan be folded and stored on a shelf. They are lightweight and weigh only11 ounces per square yard.”

It’s worth noting that AstroGuard is approved by the Texas and FloridaDepartment of Insurance. Some insurance companies offer a discount forhaving it.

CALL FOR BACK UP“We don’t realize how much every aspect of our lives relies on poweruntil there is none,” says Duane Nelson, vice president of marketingfor Generac. “A backup generator immediately senses the loss ofpower and switches its energy over to your home’s circuitry, seamless-ly keeping you plugged in. You don’t have to go outside and flip aswitch, fill a tank or rearrange your plugs.”

“Automatic backup power is different than using a portable gener-ator,” says Nelson. “An automatic home backup generator is perma-nently installed to your home’s electrical system all the time, ready inan instant and able to run for extended periods of time. This auxil-iary electrical supply performs whether you are home or away. Itoperates on natural gas or liquid propane gas and sits outside just likea central air conditioning unit.”

IS YOUR ROOF READY?“Considering people have so much invested in their homes, smarthomeowners will make the investment in a new roof before severeweather hits in order to protect not just the home, but all the posses-sions and memories inside the home,” says Ray Rosewall, CEO andpresident of DaVinci Roofscapes.

“There are two different types of winds that affect roofs duringsevere weather,” says Rosewall. “Straight line winds and pressurizedwinds can cause different damage—from uplifting the shingles off theroof to pushing intense wind-driven rain and flying debris onto theroof.

“Once air pressure moves through even a small opening in a roofand into the home during a hurricane, it can literally blow out thewalls and windows of the house. It’s vital for coastal area homeown-ers—especially those in potential hurricane areas—to have well-installed, solid roofs overhead to protect their homes.”

Don’t Prune in JuneAccording to Florida’s Miami-Dade County Department for

Permitting, Environment and Regulatory Affairs, improperly pruning

trees before a storm can actually increase the possibility that they

will break or fall more easily during the storm. The large amounts

of fallen and damaged trees usually seen after a storm are a

result of improper cutting or pruning of trees. People think that by

doing this they will reduce the risk of destruction, but the fact is

when a tree is improperly cut its branches are even more vulnera-

ble to strong winds.

The new branch attachment becomes weak, making the tree

more likely to break apart which can damage property. County offi-

cials and other experts recommend that you prepare trees several

months prior to hurricane season. If you must prune trees, do so

during the tree species’ dormant season or during early Spring.

Color, order and light bring new life to a cramped and dated kitchen

BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

Sunny Side UpTory Schmitz and her husband Mike Dingusare no strangers to decorating projects andhard work. Past projects for this couple were pub-lished in Houston House & Home in March, 2004“Free Your Home’s Chi from Clutter,” Oct. 2004“House of a Different Color” and July 2007 “ModestMakeover.” Now their kitchen and breakfast room arebeing featured in this issue.

Since they were selling their home, the couplewanted to get my staging ideas. They wanted to keeptheir basic kitchen/breakfast room layout to keep thebudget in check, but they were ready to replace win-dows, as well as update appliances, flooring, hardware, walls and countertops. They wanted to keep the exist-ing backsplash tile, cabinets, replace the floor tile andpaint the walls. We selected finishes that would blendwith their pale grey and terra cotta color scheme andmake little changes—to not only bring the room intothis decade, but also add to the kitchen’s comfort andlivability. We must have done something right becausethe home sold in two days. (Did you know that astaged home sells on average 50 percent faster andsells for 7-10 percent over list price?)

TIP: What is the first thing you change when you buy a home? The wall-paper! So go ahead and do the work for the buyer—remove that paperand paint the walls.

“We just had to get over our sentimental attachment to our dated wallpa-per,” Tory explained. “It was really hard to say goodbye to it, since we hadsearched and searched for a paper we liked. Painting the kitchen the samecolor as the living room and den (C2 Paints “Polenta”) made the roomsflow nicely, while the red dining room and entry (C2 Paints “TurkishMarket”) now compliment the nearby yellow walls. “We love how the col-ors flow between the rooms and have not missed the wallpaper one bit,” sheexclaimed. “I especially love your suggestion of painting the back wall of ourbreakfast room’s glass-fronted cabinet in the same C2 Paints “TurkishMarket” as the dining room,” she added. Note: C2 Paints is only availableonline at www. C2Color.com.

I also suggested installing hooks by the new half-glass back door and hid-ing the water heater to the left of the washer with a ventilated screen. It tookawhile, but Tory found some leftover louvered doors in the garage, whichshe painted white and used to hide the water heater. “I thought the hooks

AFTER: Selecting a large format matte tile that complemented the nearby existing tile backsplash and laying it on the diagonal, was crucial to the design. New Ikea chairs workwith the existing table. The new window fitted with a woven wood shade, new granite countertop, simplified artwork and the de-cluttered bar counter helped, too.

BEFORE: The old breakfast room was cluttered, lacked color, sported an old windowand lacked an updated window treatment. The tile floor was tired and its tiny patternmeant cleaning lots of crevices.

by the back door would be more decorative than functional, but we use themall the time,” she said.

TIP: Staging and decorating are totally opposite tasks—staging is removingyour personality; decorating is adding your personality. Staging is maximizingyour home’s potential by a professional who has staged many homes. No mat-ter what price point a house is, or its size—small or large—or how beautifullydecorated it is, staging is beneficial and will help you sell your home faster.

For both staging (for buyers) and for the time they have left in theirhome I also suggested the couple reverse the hinges on the door to the break-fast room because it collided and banged the door to the powder bath—aneasy fix that solved an irritating, constant problem almost instantly. “I don’tknow why we suffered with this issue 21 years,” Tory laughed. “With this littlechange, the whole utility area is larger and we have eliminated the awkwardoverlapping door situation,” she added.

TIP: Stash the trash. Adding Rev-A-Shelf.com pullouts to the pantry cabinet and installing a specialpullout for the trash can under the sink adds pleasure to your daily life and keeps from having an uglytrash can in your room!

Staging focuses on improving your home to make it appeal to the largest number of buyers by trans-forming it into a hot property. Staging is not cheap, but it can raise the value of your home by highlight-ing your home’s attributes, making it impressive and edging out competition.

That’s what Tory and Mike did. And believe me, I left them with a long, written list of homework todo. “With minimal changes we were able to accomplish our goal of a more colorful and classy kitchenthat flowed into the other rooms.” she explained.

“You always told us to be ‘consistent’, so we matched the Hunter Douglas woven wood blindsthroughout the downstairs from Venetian Blind & Floors Carpet One,” Tory said. “We spend a lot oftime at the table, so replacing and painting the once solid back door lets in so much more light. Weloved your budget approach and the natural, visually light look,” she concluded.

I suggested they move the vintage starburst clock to the opposite wall and change out one of thebreakfast room pictures they cut from an old grocer’s catalog. “The new one (mangoes) is a much betterchoice and it is something I would never have thought of,” she said.

The New Caledonia granite countertop from Floor Coverings & More complements the new stain-less under-mount sink and Sears Kenmore cooktop.

Tory knows the benefits of de-cluttering and staging. “I am a firm believer in the power of your envi-ronment,” she explained. “It affects your efficiency and your outlook. If I see beauty and order, I have more ‘good’ energy. We love the new space!”

Collaboration between architect andclients results in a Modern homeinspired by the finale of AlfredHitchcock’s North by Northwest

Greg LeBlanc and Mike Cox had lived in

their older home near Memorial Park for

several years when they decided they

wanted start from scratch on the same lot. The lot,

you see, wasn’t just your average Houston neigh-

borhood parcel. Their lot is a marvelously sloped

triangle that backs up to the Hogg Bird Sanctuary

and Bayou Bend near Memorial Park.

The pair knew they wanted to find creative

architect who was open to a collaborative design

process. After asking around for recommenda-

tions, they contacted Charles Todd Helton, AIA.

Greg and Mike found an instant connection with

the young architect. “From the first meeting at the

old house, I loved the energy these guys brought

to the process,” says Charles Todd Helton.

“Charles came over and we thought it might

be a 30-minute meeting, but it ended up being

about three hours,” says Greg LeBlanc. “We

talked about modern architecture, Frank Lloyd

Wright’s design principles, Fallingwater and how

Page 33: Houston House & Home Magazine June 2012 Issue

The LeBlanc-Cox home, completed in 2010, was inspired by the home featured at the end of the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, North by Northwest. Expanses ofwindows take advantage of views of the adjacent Hogg Bird Sanctuary and Bayou Bend. The home features four bedrooms in the main house (with an upstairsand downstairs master) as well as a separate casita with similar design to the main home at the rear of the property.

much we loved that sense of contemporary but not

cold, that lodge—but not overly lodge—feel.”

“We told him we really liked the house at the end

of the movie North by Northwest,” says Mike Cox.

Hollywood legend has it Frank Lloyd Wright was

approached to design the dramatic house used in the

final scenes of the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, but

architect and the movie production company never

reached an agreement. Instead, Hitchcock had set

designers create a house that looked like Wright

might have designed it.

DESIGN ORIGIN

“I have to say given the lush, natural surroundings and

the remarkable topography, this lot is the most inter-

esting site I’ve ever designed for,” says Helton.

With Frank Lloyd Wright and the iconic North by

Northwest house as starting points, Mike and Greg

told Helton they wanted exposed beams and warm

colors to help avoid a “please don’t touch” or muse-

um feel in their home. The pair also discussed with

Helton how to incorporate free-flowing spaces that

would work well for large gatherings.

Architect Charles Todd Helton collaborated with Greg LeBlanc and MikeCox to design a Modern home that recalled Frank Lloyd Wright’s work.Helton achieved this by incorporating walls of stacked stone and generouswindows contrasted by horizontal forms, such as balconies and overhangs.

Page 35: Houston House & Home Magazine June 2012 Issue

35

To accommodate festive occasions, the social areas of Greg and Mike’s home feature generously sized rooms with plenty ofwide-open flow from one space to another.

Page 36: Houston House & Home Magazine June 2012 Issue

house& home | June 2012 | house and home on l ine . com36

Greg had collected stacks of photos from maga-

zines and design books, which he and Mike sorted

through and culled to help define the design notes

they gave to Helton.

“That was huge,” says Helton, who was thrilled to

receive such an abundance of input from his clients.

Mike and Greg were impressed with Helton’s open-

minded approach and flexible, client-focused atti-

tude.

“Other architects seemed to force their methodol-

ogy on you, but Charles’s approach was more client-

service oriented,” says Mike.

Mike’s business travels kept him out of the coun-

try quite frequently, but he left Greg and Helton with

three major requests: that the garage not be front-

and-center, that there be a hot tub on the upstairs

balcony, and that the master bath be equipped with

a steam room. The rest he left up to his partner and

the architect.

The design collaboration resulted in a spacious

home with four bathrooms and four and a half baths,

including the casita near the pool. The two-story

home features high ceilings and large windows fac-

Theaqua-upholstered banquette provides a dining nook with fifties flair. Thespot is a hit with visiting nieces and nephews, as well as casual dinner gath-erings. The see-through fireplace turns up the ambiance in both the kitchenand entry.

ing to the south, where the property backs up to the

Hogg Bird Sanctuary and Bayou Bend. The spa-

themed master bath includes the requisite steam

room and enough space to bring in a massage table.

LAYERS OF DESIGN

After construction was well underway, the homeown-

ers decided they needed some assistance pulling

together all the materials and finishes they had

selected. “We had made all of our decisions based

on what we liked and what we wanted in the house,

but we just didn’t know how to fit it all together,”

says Greg.

Greg and Mike hired Jane Page Design Group to

help get their interiors to the finish line, and accord-

ing to the homeowners, Laura Litton of Jane Page

Design Group stepped into the well-advanced proj-

ect with ease.

“I would never do another house without a

designer,” says Mike. “And in hindsight, we would

have hired and interior designer sooner.”

Paul Ryan of Texas Pools was tapped to design

and build the tiered poolscape for the sloped lot,

complete with elevated hot tub, three waterfalls,

and accent lighting. Tim Turner of Windswept

Landscape Studios created the lush, yet unfussy,

landscape on the dramatically shaped lot. Turner’s

well-composed plantings and pathways comple-

ment the style of the home with a layered and ver-

dant environment.

ARCHITECT-CLIENT BOND

“We worked successfully with Charles, because he

was willing to listen to us and heard our ideas, but

at the same time we were eager to get his own

thoughts from an architect’s perspective,” says

Greg. “The entire process evolves continuously

while planning and discussing design principles

and philosophies while the architect focuses his

attention and incorporates the client's ideas and

expectations into the design.”

Architect Charles Todd Helton created a hideaway beneath thestairs for all of Greg and Mike’s electronics equipment.

Wide plank French oak brings warmth to floors of the upstairs master bedroom and landing. The master bedroom also includes a full balcony, completewith Mike’s requested hot tub. The luxe floor-to-ceiling window coverings are from G&S Draperies.

For the spa-inspired master bath, wrap-around vanities, designed with a continuous stone countertop, create a natural flow. A steam room connects the bath tonature by opening onto a balcony. Wavy Ambra tile was installed in and around the two showers, including the steam shower. Various gray tones of flooring, coun-tertops, and walls are offset by the warm glow from mother-of-pearl shell mirror frames.

Tim Turner of Windswept Landscape Studios created a natural screen of plants along fence lines, per Greg and Mike’s request for a landscape that would be in harmony with the adjacent bird sanc-tuary and museum grounds. Plants selected are almost all green foliage plants, but offer a diversityof weights and textures for visual interest.

Views of the back of the home from the pool are the most reminiscent of Wright’s Fallingwater and the North by Northwest home. From here, the sweepingheight of the roofline and the waterfalls’ downward motion comprise a delightful yin and yang, while the horizontal lines of the balconies, railings and roofoverhang provide a soothing balance.

Summer evenings and weekend get-togethers get usfired up about grilling. Bring on the burgers, seasonedsteaks and marinated chicken! If you love to cook for acrowd, then maybe it’s time to upgrade from a stand-alone grill to a full-on outdoor kitchen.

Houston’s spring-though-fall grilling season gives outdoor cooks plen-ty of time to pursue their passion, and has cultivated some of the coun-

try’s top outdoor kitchen resources right here in our area. Mike Logan ofTexas Pit Crafters, a designer and manufacturer of pits, smokers and grillssince 1997, says there are several important considerations when startingan outdoor kitchen project.

“The keys to any grill or outdoor kitchen project are the reputation ofthe builder/manufacturer, the warranty of the products and project andthe quality and grade of the products,” says Logan. “For example, manystainless steel grills look good but will deteriorate and fall apart in a yearor two because the grade of the stainless was poor and the thickness orgauge is too thin to withstand the heat.”

offer a refrigerator and it has a lock for just $299. For the same price, you can add a winecooler as well. What about an icemaker? Really, you are limited only by your imagination.”

For structures and surfaces, Logan says he gets frequent orders for stone and slab materialssuch as granite, slate and polished flagstone.

STATE OF THE GRILL

Cunningham is fired up about innovations in grilling technologies. He praises heat-zonecooking, which allows you to sear a steak in one zone of the grill while preparing delicate veg-etables in the zone next to it. “You can also have internal lights for night-time cooking, aswell as electronic ignition that works every time. Rotisseries with rear burners let you cooklarge meals slowly while locking in the juices.”

Nervous about cooking meats just right?Cunningham says the FireMagic brand makes grillswith a temperature read-out pad on the controlpanel that indicates the internal temperature of eachzone across the grill in real-time. “You can eveninsert the included temp probe to check the internaltemp of the brisket or other large piece of meat youare preparing,” he says.

Logan praises grills that offer a combination ofcooking fuels. “Hybrid grills that allow for gas aswell as charcoal and wood grilling are quite popu-lar,” says Logan. “Also, outdoor pizza ovens arebecoming quite popular and allow for a variety ofcooking options. Texas Pit Crafters specializes inboth hybrid grills and pizza ovens—both of whichwe manufacture and install.”

FUEL EFFICIENCY

Are there any differences in fuel efficiency among today’sgrills? “Basically, Natural Gas grills cost a little less tooperate than propane and cost a lot less than electricgrills,” says Cunningham. “Even with the slight differ-ence between natural gas and propane, you’re still talkingabout only a buck or two to prepare the average meal oneither fuel type.”

“Our Infrared gas grills are probably as fuel efficientas any grill we make,” says Logan. “The reason is thehigh temp—1200 to1500 degrees—allows for faster

grilling time and therefore less gas consumption. Also, many folks now maketheir own lump charcoal from wood which is efficient use of wood.”

“Some folks just love the flavor it produces and prefer to slow smoke theirmeats,” says Cunningham. “No problem, FireMagic now offers a combo unitthat has two separate lids, one for charcoal and one for gas. The charcoal sideeven has a gas-powered ignition system.”

HOW LONG & HOW MUCH?The time frame from start to finish on an outdoor kitchen varies. “It depends. Some projects can be completed in just 2-3 days, while more elaborate onescan take weeks, although that’s rare,” says Cunningham. “You can even pur-chase some outdoor kitchen packages in a box with a 7-foot outdoor kitchencabinet, refrigerator, stainless steel grill and stainless steel door all for just$2999 and be cooking on it tonight!”

Logan says Texas Pit Crafters’ custom projects generally take 7-10 days tofinalize the plan and project scope. “Once construction starts it will take 3-14days depending on the complexity,” says Logan. “This does not include manu-facturing lead time for grills and storage which can be 4-8 weeks depending onthe time of year.”

Pricing stars around $3,000 to $4,000 and when a multitude of featuresand fixtures are incorporated into the outdoor kitchen, the price tag can be tentimes that. “An outdoor kitchen can range from a simple grilling island for$4,000 to a full outdoor kitchen with all the bells and whistles for $50,000+,”says Logan.

DRINK IN THE SIGHT AND SOUND OF WATERWater is essential for all living things. It sustains life, spurs

growth and brings renewal. Adding a fountain or water fea-

ture to your landscape adds serenity to your outdoor environ-

ment, while the motion of the water brings waves of vitality.

pet of the month

’ELLO, CHAPS. I’M CHARLIE!I’m presently embroiled in an affair at the HSPCAwhere I’m running in circles and pretending to be akangaroo. They don’t know if I’m English or Australian, and like the Geico gecko, I’m a bit confused myselfmost days. A little about me: I'm a very energetic, proper lad who loves to play and chase a ball or playtug-of-war. I’m the bees knees at doggy rugby! WhenI’m not being sporty and impressing the birds, I canrelax and become a perfect gentleman lap doggy. I’vebeen known to take to a good petting while watchingthe telly, and I love to go on long walks. I enjoy thecompany of other animals and thoroughly enjoy play-time with them. The good blokes here at HSPCA sayI’m still in need of some training but I’m no clot, juststill learning. I think I’d make a rather fun flatmate ifyou’d have me. Here are my stats:

Primary Color: BrindleWeight: 11.3 lbs.Age: 3yrs, 2mthsYes, I am, gulp, neutered and up-to-date with all routineshots. HSPCA ID#: 184943
