Background

National Statistical Office (NSO) first conducted the

Household Energy Consumption Survey in 1984

The questionnaire was attached to the Labor Force

Survey and continually conducted for 2 years

In 1986, the survey items were a part of expenditure

questionnaire of the Household Socio-Economic

Survey (HSES)

SES was conducted every 2 years, and from 2006

onwards NSO has conducted the survey annually

Coverage

Covered all private, noninstitution households

residing in all provinces

Both municipal and non-municipal areas

Excluding households of foreign diplomats and other

temporary residents

Data Collection

Collected by an interviewing method every month

The reference period is the month before the

month in which the interview was conducted

For example, an interview was taken place in July,

2017; hence, the reference period referred to “1st

to 30th June, 2017”

Survey Content

General information of household members such

as, number of household member, sex, age,

education, marital status, employment, etc.

Household expenditure includes consumption

expenditure and non-consumption expenditure

Expenditure on energy includes expenditure on

petroleum products and other products

Household appliances and vehicles

Sample Design

Stratified Two–stage Sampling

Provinces were considered to be constituted strata,

altogether 77 strata

Each stratum was divided into municipal areas and

non-municipal areas

The primary sampling unit was enumeration area

(EA)

Private households were the ultimate sampling unit

(52,000 households)
