Marriott Renaissance Hotel, St Pancras Chambers, UK

In 1997 the Chambers Group — consisting of the Whitbread Hotel Company, the Manhattan Loft Corporation and BAA Lynton — won a competition for the redevelopment of St Pancras Chambers, a well-known London landmark and the public face of St Pancras station. The competition was set up by the station’s owners, London and Continental Railways.

RHWL Architects led the design team, and in November 2003 the London Advisory Committee of English Heritage gave the go-ahead for an application for planning and listed building consent. Manhattan Loft took the role of developer, with Renaissance as the hotel operator.

St Pancras Chambers was designed as a hotel by George Gilbert Scott, for Midland Railways, in the 1860s. It has been

completely refurbished and returned to use as a 244-bed, fi ve-star hotel with sixty-seven apartments, including one luxury penthouse.

A new wing has been constructed adjacent to the station in the style of the original building and provides the majority of the hotel bedrooms.

The major public rooms in the Chambers are used as restaurants, bars and hotel suites with a number, including the Grand Stairs, having been redecorated to the original schemes.

Entrance to the hotel will be via the western arch into the old taxi road which has been converted to form a grand reception space; the apartments have a separate designated entrance from the forecourt.

Nottingham University Hotel, UK

RHWL’s competition-winning design for a 202 bedroom four-star hotel nestles into the green surroundings of the University of Nottingham’s main campus.

The Hotel consists of two bedroom wings with a vibrant central hub, connecting the two. This central public space is enclosed by a structural glass roof and over-sailing timber canopy designed to express the surrounding mature trees and orchard area. The hotel hosts a range of bedroom sizes, from standard rooms to executive suites with supporting lounge facilities and roof terraces.

It has a BREEAM Excellent rating which was achieved through innovative building design and orientation, as well as the inclusion of technologies such as green roofs, ground source heat pumps, photovoltaics, a bespoke sustainable urban drainage system and Combined Heat and Power.

The Orchard has won numerous awards, including the RICS Tourism and Leisure Award, the ‘Best Large Commercial Building’ at the LABC Excellence Awards, and was also shortlisted for the RIBA regional awards.

Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, London,UK

New build 450 bedroom hotel situated on London’s Albert Embankment. In addition to the rooms, reception, bar and restaurant, the hotel houses spectacular conference and events facilities, catering for 3,000 people.

The structure is designed to take a further fi ve fl oors of

‘sky-suites’, designed to be added at a future date. RHWL made the hotel bedrooms acoustically secure by a

bespoke double skin façade. This solution provides a façade of considerable depth and texture, and allows access for cleaning and maintenance.

Myhotel Brighton, UK

Award winning new build 4-star plus boutique hotel for Myhotels offering 80 bedrooms, conference facilities, bar, restaurant and retail over 4 storeys. The brief presented us with the opportunity to both respond to the urban context and express the brand by design.

The calm exterior of the hotel is juxtaposed against a unique and playful interior, refl ecting Myhotel’s desire for cutting edge design and technology and attention to detail.

The interior design was a collaboration between Karim Rashid and RHWL.

Sofi tel Hotel Pall Mall, London UK

This £20m project is the fi rst fl agship 5-star Accor Sofi tel to be built in London with MWB as developers. Providing 186-key rooms within an existing Grade II Listed building (formerly Cox & Co. Bank).

The works consisted of major structural re-confi guration of the existing building, working closely with English Heritage and Conservation, including conversion of the existing banking hall into a two-storey reception lobby/restaurant and high level guest access balcony.

Conference/Banqueting facilities are provided in the lower ground with a separate access internally for hotel guests. Specialist bar and lounge areas are located at ground level, forming an annexed space off the main reception area.

The interior of the hotel presents a luxurious environment created by PYR Interiors and the external facade has been thoroughly cleaned to present a crisp elegant presence on Pall Mall. It deservedly fi lls the role of the Sofi tel fl agship range.

Charterhouse Malmaison, UK

The Charterhouse is the fl agship of the Malmaison boutique hotel brand. It is located on Charterhouse Square, a private road in the heart of fashionable Clerkenwell, within easy walking distance of the Barbican and Smithfi eld Market.

In 2000 Malmaison acquired 18–21a Charterhouse Square, an Edwardian hostel which had stood empty for a long time.

RHWL were invited to design a hotel on the site. After a thorough investigation of the existing structure, it was decided to optimise the available space by demolishing the interior and

retaining the gabled façade. This enabled RHWL to design to modern standards, with a completely replanned interior.

The original building, completed in 1902, was a maze of uninviting corridors and small dark rooms. By contrast, RHWL has designed a spacious, contemporary hotel, fi nished to a high specifi cation, in keeping with the Malmaison brand. In addition to the hotels 97 bedrooms there is a gymnasium, meeting rooms, bar and brasserie.

With views of Hyde Park and Marble Arch, the Marriott Hotel makes optimum use of its prestigious location, at the corner of Oxford Street and Park Lane. The 5-star Hotel has 157 bedrooms together with 18 residential penthouse apartments.

RHWL’s brief included a combination of renovation and new-build. The Hotel comprises two buildings, an existing late-Edwardian mansion block designed by Frank Verity and a sympathetic extension. The new addition has distinctly different design characteristics.

Using similar Portland Stone, RHWL has produced a curvaceous younger sibling to Verity’s original. Defi ning features include cantilevered balconies and a deeply recessed ground fl oor.

The interior has been designed for luxury, to satisfy the requirements of the hotel’s clientele, with white marble and timber used throughout. An illuminated swimming pool occupies the basement.

Marriott Hotel Park Lane, UK

Marriott Premier Inn, County Hall, UK

County Hall, formerly the home of the Greater London Council, stood empty for seven years until sold to Japanese company Shirayama Shokusan UK Ltd in 1993.

RHWL was appointed architect and planner for the entire 150,000m2 building. Together with Shirayama the practice has masterplanned and carried out the conversion of most of this Grade II* listed building.

Part of the scheme comprises a 200-key 4-star Marriott and a separate 314-key Travel Inn for the Whitbread Hotel

Company (WHC). Each hotel is accessed separately - the Marriott via the members’ courtyard, and the Travel Inn via Belvedere Road. A 3,000m2 luxury leisure club is located on the upper levels of the building.

The fi rst fl oor comprises the sensitive conversion of listed rooms into reception, restaurant, bars, lounges and feature corridors; all the fi ne oak wall panelling and plaster coffered ceilings were retained throughout. The project required close collaboration with English Heritage and conservation offi cers.

As well as the two successful hotel conversions, we have completed a number of other high-profi le projects within the building. These projects include the conversion of a large suite of rooms into gallery space for Charles Saatchi’s collection of contemporary art, a scheme which blends restoration with the gentle insertion of new elements.

Hyatt Regency Hotel, Birmingham, UK

The 24-storey hotel is a prominent central landmark in the City of Birmingham. The building contains 342 bedrooms, arranged as King and Twin accommodation and as Junior, Executive and Presidential suites affording panoramic city views.

There are also lounges, a brasserie restaurant, a speciality

restaurant, bars, clubrooms, a boardroom, meeting room suite and a fi tness centre with an indoor swimming pool.

The hotel, which contains 23,000m2 of accommodation was completed on time and within budget. RHWL also led the team which developed the adjacent International Convention Centre which links to the hotel by an enclosed glass bridge.

Four Seasons Hotel Canary Wharf, London, UK

RHWL were lead architects of this Philippe Starck designed 200-key hotel. In spite of its unique design and high specifi cation, the hotel was successfully constructed and fi tted out in just 13 months.

The 5-star Four Seasons hotel forms part of a mixed-use development including leisure and residential units. It offers

a conference and banqueting hall as well as a theatre style kitchen restaurant.

Finished in limestone, with ice-cube window bays to bedrooms and a distinctive green roof. The building has become a landmark hotel in London.

Aparthotel Albert Embankment, London, UK

Planning consent was received in 2007 for a major refurbishment and change of use of this London South Bank redundant offi ce providing 3 levels of residential, 89 Aparthotel bedrooms over ground fl oor reception and public restaurant.

A new planning consent for demolition and total rebuild increasing the Aparthotel to 102 units has been submitted.

The main facades will be clad in contemporary curtain walling, balconies and projecting glass bays to take full advantage of the magnifi cent views of the river Thames and the Houses of Parliament opposite.

This dramatic, sculptural scheme is being developed in collaboration with UK design practice Heatherwick Studio.

Occupying a site with spectacular views of Doha Bay, the scheme will comprise a 7 star hotel and associated luxury villas, conference and banqueting facilities and souk as well as a marina able to accommodate the largest of luxury yachts.

The building is comprised of three curving structures

that appear to rise from the ground forming three ‘peaks’ and creating a vast open area between them, in the centre of which is a magnifi cent animated fountain. On one side of the building luxury villas nestle into the facade as if on a lush hillside, cascading down to the marina.

Development of the project is ongoing.

Grand Hotel, Doha, Qatar

Design competition entry for the Salwa resort located on the western Qatari coastline in association with G1 Architecture / Scape landscaping.

This large desert coastline site of 120 hectares is to provide a 250 bed, fi ve-star luxury hotel with arabic-themed aqua park & souk, together with conference / function suite and wellness centre.

The extensive grounds will also include 120 private beachfront villas, riads and mansions, some of which will be built out over water, together with extensive sport / leisure facilities such as water sports marina, boat club, golf course, beach sports and cinema.

Our vision for the Lusail Tower Hotel is for a unique 5-star luxury hotel with contemporary world-class architecture and interior design providing a modern hospitality destination with discrete elegance and intimacy relevant to local Arabic tradition.

The building’s location on the new Lusail Waterfront requires a modern building which is an architecturally signifi cant landmark, yet responds and acknowledges commercial and fi nancial sensibilities and effi ciency of space utilization, design integrity and buildability.

The hotel utilizes eco-sensitive designs by the maximisation of natural light and central atrium ventilation as well as solar

shading balconies, and minimisation of the double skin facades external elevational envelope.

The hotel will provide a contemporary environment around Arabian thematic designs with true 5-star guest services and experience, delivering a diversity of distinctive and destination food and beverage offerings, luxurious spa and tranquil treatment centres and both indoor and outdoor pools and fi tness facilities.

The hotel is designed to accommodate and cater for both the business and leisure travellers and will provide fl exible meeting/function and banqueting facilities.

Lusail Tower Hotel, Doha, Qatar

Streete Court Spa Hotel, London, UK

Conversion and extension of this former abandoned Grade II listed boys school, located in the Surrey greenbelt near Gatwick and the M25 motorway.

The original consent allowed for 40 keys with new leisure and banqueting /meeting facilities which has proved to be economically challenging in the current climate. RHWL have now redesigned and successfully achieved planning for an increase to 73-keys following further land acquisition.

The proposals also recreate the historic, but now

demolished, orangery which will become the new ballroom-hosting functions, meetings and weddings.

A new health and beauty spa and separate leisure club will cater for guests, golfers and club members alike. The greenbelt country setting includes a 9-hole golf course, a fully stocked fi shing lake and tennis courts. The historic formal landscaped gardens and terraces will be brought back to their former glory.

Rochester Riverside Hotel, UK

RHWL were engaged by SEEDA/Medway Council to develop and design the Hotel Quarter of the Rochester Riverside Masterplan – a high profi le, major public sector inspired regeneration of strategic importance within the Thames Gateway.

The highly visible riverside frontage site is particularly sensitive being located adjacent to the historic town centre and High Street, including Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral as well as being on a site of major archaeological interest.

Our design envisages two commercial/retail buildings which are defi ned by and grouped around the archaeological

remains of the original roman wall and watchtower, which will be unearthed and permanently displayed.

The riverside walkway will be continued behind the new fl ood defence wall with local market, river life displays and public realm opportunities leading to a new 175-key full-service upmarket hotel catering for both the local and tourist markets.

The Hotel will be six-storeys high with extensive guest visitor facilities giving panoramic views of the river, whilst the main entrance fronts a new public square to the rear. The design anticipates and caters for further future phased development.
