» WELCOME TO GHENT

Ghent is located in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university.

Around 650, Saint Amand founded two abbeys in Ghent: St. Pe-ter’s (Blandinium) and St. Bavo’s Abbey. Around 800, Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, appointed Einhard, the biographer of Charlemagne, as abbot of both abbeys. In 851 and 879, the city was however attacked and plundered twice by the Vikings.

Within the protection of the County of Flanders, the city recovered and flourished from the 11th century, growing to become a small city-state. By the 13th century, Ghent was the largest city in Eu-rope north of the Alps after Paris; it was bigger than Cologne, or Moscow. Up to 65,000 people lived within the city walls. The belfry and the towers of the Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas’ Church are just a few examples of the skyline of the period.

Ghent is a historic city, yet at the same time a contemporary one. The modern daily life of the city’s active inhabitants plays itself out against a gorgeous historical backdrop. In Ghent, they live, work and enjoy life over and over again each day.

Ghent University is one of the larger Flemish universities, consist-ing of 41,000 students and 9,000 staff members.

The city is alive and bids you welcome.

Dear Friends,

We would like to welcome you to the Euro Fed Lipid Congress 2016. The event is hosted by the recently established BENELUX Lipid Network (BLN) organization. This year, the congress is held in the modern International Conference Center (ICC) located in a vicin-ity of the museum district and within walking distance to the histori-cal centre of Ghent. This city is a popular and traditional venue for organizing scientific meetings mainly due to the presence of Ghent University.

A high quality program featuring a number of keynotes and invited lectures has been designed by the Scientific Committee led by Karel Hrncirik (Unilever) and Roland Verhé (Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant). The agenda of the congress reflects the division structure of Euro Fed Lipid; on top of that, the most topical themes will be dis-cussed in joint, cross-divisional sessions, which will enable address-ing these themes in a comprehensive way. Overall, the program provides a variety of opportunities to learn about the most recent developments around renewable resources, processing, biotech-nology, quality, nutrition and other aspects of oils and fats. Next to the update on recent scientific and technical matters, the confer-ence offers a number of opportunities for informal networking and lively discussions during the coffee and lunch breaks, receptions and poster sessions.

We are convinced that the strong program we built is going to meet your demand for the know-how both in fundamental and applied research of oils and fats and we carry on the success of previous Euro Fed Lipid meetings. We are looking forward to meeting you in Ghent not only to enjoy inspiring scientific discussions, but also to experience this very unique destination.

» PRACTICAL SHORT COURSE

Enzyme Technology in Oilseeds, Oils & Fats Processing and Transformation

Novotel Gent Centrum Ghent, Belgium 21 – 22 September 2016

Enzymes are used in oilseed extraction, oil degumming and oils & fats modification. In the last five or more years, this has dramati-cally changed oils & fats processing. Using enzymes to modify ed-ible oils has changed the way to produce novel hardstocks, and a variety of structure-modifying processes offering highly versatile process have been introduced.

The course will bring a full review of using enzyme technology in oilseed processing and seed modification, the role of various phos-pholipases in degumming and optimizing refinery yield, as well as explaining the versatility of enzymatic interesterification technology in production of novel components for structured food, as well as nutrition & health, and detergent and other non-food applica-tions. Industrial application of enzymatic interesterification will be discussed in detail, including the novel applications in making bio-diesel and other biofuels.

The practical short course is targeted at oil technologists and re-searchers dealing with process and product development. The program will also offer the opportunity to visit Bio Base Europe Pilot facilities and see enzymatic lipid modification in action.

An insight into methodologi-cal aspects and challenges of fatty acid analysis of various types of samples also is included in the program. The course consists of lectures, workshops on student research project presentations and workshops on methodological aspects (based on questions collected from the participants prior to the start of the course).

A special discount is offered to those who want to attend both this part of the congress and the specialist course.

Congress Dinner at the Augustijnenklooster

Augustijnenklooster Academiestraat 1 9000 GentPhone +32 9 225 16 59 www.thagaste.be

Pre-Registration essential.

The Augustinian monas-tery (1295) offers a perfect meeting place for all kind of events. It is located in the historic centre of Gent, less than 10 minutes’ walk-ing distance from the Kore-nmarkt, the Cathedral, the Graslei and the Belfry.

The Augustinian monastery is unique in Europe with more than 7 centuries of history. There have been prosperous and very difficult times. In the 19th century the building was a textile factory while monks were living in the monastery.

Even today monks live and work in the monastery. Currently they oversee and educate a younger generation of international stu-dents who will become monks in the Belgian Augustinian monas-teries. The heart of the building is a beautifully restored inner court, a real oasis of peace and calm. The monks only recently opened their doors to the splendid building, which is a hidden jewel even for the locals.

The monastery is also known for a unique and rich heritage. In the cloisters you will discover monumental paintings. Each conference room is decorated with artworks gathered throughout the rich and long history of the convent. The monastery also owns a historical and beautiful library with a unique book collection in an amazing setting. Last but not least the monastery is a unique place for concerts with a monumental baroque organ built in 1873 by Jean-Philippe Forrest.
