Indiresh University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot organized successfully the Totagarike Mela from 2 - 4 January 2021. During nd th the Totagarika Mela the field demonstration of commercially viable various colored flowers, diverse vegetables, kitchen garden and Israel technologies were demonstrated in the university farm. As 2021 has been recognized as international year of fruits and vegetables, keeping in view of this to promote fruits and vegetables cultivation to protect and improve the health status of the Indians. University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot is the only designated Horticulture University in the state and 3 in the country performing the mandates of rd teaching, research and extension. This year due to pandemic Covid-19, human health was treated as the primary concern and appropriate diet of human beings is in the hands of every citizen. Every year Totagarika Mela provides platform for the participating farmers to exchange their ideas and upgrade their knowledge of the novel technologies developed by the university. This year due to pandemic Covid-19, human health was treated as the primary concern and appropriate diet of human beings is in

the hands of every citizen. Every year Totagarika Mela provides platform for the participating farmers to exchange their ideas and

upgrade their knowledge of the novel technologies developed by the university.

The programme was inaugurated by Hon'ble Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka Shri. B. S. Yediyurappa, through online

Sericulture Dr. K. C. Narayangouda. During the mela many research findings of university and

taking the needy research in this region to support the farming community. In teaching arena the university has occupied the first

position in national level by securing highest number of JRF and SRF. He promised the university stating that his government is keen

in supporting farming community and scientific community by ear marking appreciable budget towards university teaching,

research and extension and complemented the university.

Another chief guest of the inaugural function Shri. Govind Karjol, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka

participated through online, addressed the gathering and said that University was established with the kind approval of then chief

minister and present chief minister ShriYediyurappaji and praised that the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot since it has

excelled in all spheres of development within short span of a decade. The University has progressed much faster for which I

personally appreciate and complement all the scientists of university and involved farmers who struggled to achieve this height of

the university. He also said that Government has sanctioned Rs. 9.00 crore for construction of hostel and further land will be made

available to the university at an early date.

Another chief guest Dr. K.C. Narayanagouda, Honorable Minister for Horticulture and Sericulture, Government of Karnataka

and Pro-Chancellor of UHS Bagalkot requested the Chief Minister of Karnataka to support the university in solving existing

infrastructure, personnel and financial problems of the University as early as possible. He expressed with his personal experience

that the Indian farmers need to adopt Israel technologies for getting good crop in all the seasons with limited scarce irrigation water.

He suggested the University to act as a temple for the farmers and scientists should act as God.

After successful first day, the second day of Totagarika Mela was earmarked for honoring the identified best horticulture

farmers/farm women as "Phalashrestaru" of University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot. The Director ATARI of ICAR, for zone

VIII, Bengaluru, motivated the farmers to focus on post harvest technologies and value addition of horticultural crops. Under severe

Covid-19 pandemic situation, some traditional and commercial crops like ginger, turmeric and black pepper were of great demand in

the international market and sold at higher prices than in the normal situation. Hence, farmers to focus in selection of such types of

crops and plan for export market to international trade to double their farm income through farmer's organizations. Dr. M. B. Chetti,

Chief Guest and Honorable Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad appreciated UHS, Bagalkot for

achieving greater performance in the technological and varietal developments within a short period of 11 years of its establishment.

Other guests Dr. Sonnad and Shri Muttappa Komar, Vice President Zilla Panchayath, Bagalkot shared their thoughts on the dais.All

the 23 awardees of best horticulture farmer and farm women were complimented by Dr. M.K. Naik, Honorable Vice Chancellor,

University ofAgricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shimogga and asked to share their technological intervention adopted in their

field to motivate the other farmers also. Another chief guest, Shri J. C. Madhuswamy, Honorable Minister of law, parliamentary

affairs and minor irrigation, Government of Karnataka insisted to the farmers to grow horticultural crops adapting low cost

technology to reduce the cost of production. Further, he has appreciated the Totagarika Mela-2021 as progressive achievement in

horticultural production. He praised the University for its Integrated Developments.

On the third day in the closing remarks of Poojya Shree Munipra Shri Shivamurthy Murugarajendra Swamiji of Chitradurga who

joined the mela valedictory function online and expressed his happiness for organizing online mela showcasing all the relevant

technologies and profitable scientific farming practices with high yielding cultivars, practices and techniques so as to cut down the

cost of production, increases value in the production system so as to realize quality produce which can fetch highest returns to the

farmers. The cost cutting technologies, high yielding varieties, labour saving farm implements and machineries were the highlights

of the mela. The closing function was chaired by Hon'ble Member of Legislative Assembly of Bagalkot Dr. Veeranna

and District Minister, Horticulture Minister, Former Vice Chancellors of UHS, Bagalkot and present Vice Chancellors of all the

five farm universities of Karnataka participated through online and delivered effective relevant technical information on

Horticulture for Health on the theme of Totagarike Mela 2021. In all the three days, Totagarike mela 2021 was a grand success,

which the eminent personalities praised to organize such events every year.

Training Programme on Importance & Methods of Organic FarmingUnder Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojane Programme

One day training programme on Importance & Methods of

Organic Farming was organized by HEEU, KRCCH, Arabhavi

along with Department of Horticulture, Zilla Panchayat, Belagavi,

BIRDS NGO, Naganoor, Belagavi and APOF, Pune, at KRC

College of Horticulture, Arabhavi Belagavi (Dist) on 12.01.2021.

Dr. N. Thammaih., Dean, KRCCH, Arabhavi was the president of

the programme. Sri. Ravindra Hakati, Deputy Director of

Horticulture, Zilla Panchayat, Belagavi inaugurated the

programme. Sri. R.M. Patil, Executive Director, BIRDS NGO,

Naganoor, was chief guest for the programme. Dr.Adarsh, subject

matter specialist, KVK, Tukkanatti delivered the lecture on Paramparagatha Krishi Vikas Yojane (PKVY) concept and

implementation at farmers level. Dr. Vijaymahantesh, Assistant Professor of Agronomy, Mr. Prashant. A, Assistant Professor of

Plant Pathology and Smt. Renuka Hirekurabar, Assistant Professor of Entomology, acted as resource persons on various topics.

Dr. Kantharaju. V., Professor of Plant Pathology KRCCH, Arabhavi, demonstrated the methodology of production of

Vermicompost from banana pseudostem and leaves. Dr. Sachinkumar T. Nandimath., Assistant Professor of Agril. Economics,

HEEU, KRCCH,Arabhavi, gave the vote of thanks to the scientists & farmers. Totally, Fifty officers and Extension personnel from

KSDH, Belagavi have participated in the training programme.

College of Horticulture, Bidar a constituent College of University

of Horticultural Sciences Bagalkot has organized a ten days national

level virtual training programme from 28.12.2020 to 06.01.2021 on

“Emerging Trends in seed Production Technology and quality

Control Framework for effective seed supply chain of Horticulture

crops. The programme was inaugurated on 28.12.2020 by the

Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Honorable Vice Chancellor of University of

Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. During his inaugural address he

emphasized on the scope for the quality seed production and

opportunities. He mentioned that India has witnessed tremendous

increase in horticulture production over the last few years due to supply of quality seed material. During 10 days of training

programme total of 27 lectures where delivered by eminent speakers from both public and private sectors. A total number of 1400

participants enrolled in the training programme with representation from different states of the country and few international

participants from the countries like Bangladesh, Tanzania, Kuwait, Italy and Germany. Variety of topics related with latest

advances in seed production technology and seed supply chain management were deliberated. In the valedictory programme,

Dr. M. B. Chetti, Honorable Vice-Chancellor, UAS, Dharwad, Dr. K. N. Kattimani, Honorable Vice-Chancellor, UAS, Raichur and

Dr. Y. K. Kotikal, Director of Extension, UHS, Bagalkot participated as chief guests and distributed certificates virtually to

Potato Field Day at BengaluruAPotato Field Day (Apical Stem Cutting Technology) under the RKVY

Project in collaboration with HEEU, Bengaluru, College of Horticulture

and International Potato centre, Bengaluru on 28.01.2021 at RHREC,

UHS Campus, Bengaluru was organized. Dr. K. M. Indiresh, Honorable

Vice Chancellor, UHS Bagalkot inaugurated the field day. The Director of

Research, Dr. D. R. Patil presided over the programme. Dr. Y. K. Kotikal,

Director of Extension, Dr. R. C. Jagadeesh, Dean, COH, Bengaluru, Dr.

Ravindra Reddy, Consultant, CIP, Dr. Tulsiram K, Senior Scientist and

Head, KVK, Kolar, Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi, SADH, Chikkaballapura, Mr. Chandrashekar, Progressive Farmer, Kolar,

Mr. Manjunath, Consultant, COE, FPO graced the occasion and addressed 185 farmers from Bengaluru Rural, Kolar and

Chikkaballapur district. Dr. Vishnuvardhana , ADRE, RHREC, Bengaluru gave introductory remarks on Apical Stem cutting

technology. Dr. Munikrishnappa, P.M., Dr. G.K. Ramegowda, Dr. Amrutha Bhat, Dr, Shankarappa K.S. Dr. Raghunatha Reddy,

Dr, Swetha, B.S. staff and students of College of Horticulture were present in the programme. Field day had created awareness

among farmers on new seed production technology in Potato (ASC), nursery techniques through demonstrations and field visits.

College of Horticulture, Bidar has organized Training programme

on 'House hold herbal remedies and scope of potential medicinal and

aromatic plants production' on 11-12-2020 at Dubulgundi village,

Bidar. The exhibition was inaugurated by Shri. Lakshaman Bulla,

Member, ZP, Bidar, The programme was presided over by Dr. Ravindra

Mulge, Dean, College of Horticulture, Bidar, Shri Pradeep Pasarge,

President, Gram Panchayat, Dubulgundi, Shri. Vidyanand C., Joint

Director of Agriculture, Bidar and Shri. Mallikarjun Bavage, Deputy

Training Cum Exhibition Programme on House Hold Herbal Remedies andScope of Potential Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Production at Bidar

Director of Horticulture, Bidar and Shri. Ashok Chalkapure were present as a guests on the occasion. Dr. Ashok Suryawenshi,

Dr.A.G. Patil, Dr. Shashikala Ruli and Dr. Dhanajay P. and other staff and Final year students were also present on the occasion and

exhibited the various demonstration models on watershed, irrigation system, kitchen gardens, IFS etc.

Afield day on cabbage, cultivated under natural farming, was

organized on 02-02-2021 at HREC, Hidkal Dam, Tq: Hukkeri,

Dist: Belagavi. Comparative performance of cabbage grown

under different farming practices package of practice,viz.,

farmers practice, natural farming and organic farming was

observed by the farmers in the field. The function was

inaugurated by the Dr. K. M. Indiresh, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor,

UHS, Bagalkot. He informed the farmers to adopt ecological

farming practices which will go a long way in benefitting the

farmers in particular and society at large. He urged to gain

Field Day Cum Demonstration on Potato Produced from Apical Stem CuttingsOrganised at HREC, Somanahallikaval, Hassan

A field day on potato cum demonstration on tissue culture plantlets,

mother plants and pro-tray production of rooted apical stem cuttings

was organized under RKVY at Horticulture Research and Extension

Centre, Somanahallikaval, Hassan on 19.01.2021 in association with

Department of Horticulture, Hassan, KVK, Kandli, COA, Hassan,

ARS, Hassan, CIP, Bengaluru and GIZ, Hassan. During the

programme, Mrs. Soumya Shetty., Technical Assistant, HREC, Hassan

welcomed the guests, officers and farmers. The programme was

inaugurated by Dr.Y. K. Kotikal, Director of Extension, UHS, Bagalkot

many dignitaries participated in the programme. Dr. R. T. Patil extended the vote of thanks. More than 200 farmers participated in

the function.

One day district level cashew seminar was organized at Horticulture

Research and Extension Centre, Hogalagere on 07.01.2021. The

progamme was sponsored and financially assisted by Directorate of

Cashew nut and Cocoa development, Cochin, Kerala. Dr. R.K.

Ramachandra, Station Head, HREC, Hogalagere welcomed the

guests, officers, farmers and delivered the introductory speech on

improved practices of cashew cultivation. The seminar was

inaugurated by Dr. Venkatesh N Hubballi, Director, DDCD, Cochin

and DrVishnuvardhan, Associate Director of Research, RHREC,

Bengalurupresided over the function. During the Programme,

District Level Cashew Seminar at HREC, Hogalagere

Dr. B.N. Prasad, Joint Director of Horticulture, Bengaluru, Mr. M. Srinivas, SADH, Dept, of Horticulture, Srinivasapura, Mr. Y. V.

Amarnath, cashew processor, Srinivasapura and Mr. Rajanna, progressive farmer shared the dias and expressed their opinion about

cashew crop. The Director of DDCD, Dr. Venkatesh N Hubballi, praised cashew crop as 'white gold' and opined that it is boon for

dry land region. An exhibition was organized with different cashew kernel grades, charts, cashew grafts and nuts of cashew.

Technical session on various aspects of cashew cultivation like crop improvement, crop management, crop protection, post harvest

technology and marketing were briefly explained by the scientists. Mr. Rajendra, B.N., Asssistant Professor of Fruit science

extended the vote of thanks to all the dignitaries, officers, farmers and Staff gathered during the event. Finally the programme ended

up by distribution of Cashew grafts to the participated farmers.

On the eve of “WORLD SOIL HEALTH DAY” programme

was organized at University Auditorium on 5th December

2020 at Bagalkot. A lecture was given by Dr. Rudresh, D. L.,

Assistant Professor of Agricultural Microbiology, College of

Horticulture, Bagalkot on the topic “Keep Soil Alive, Protect

Soil Diversity” and briefed about the importance and role of

different soil organisms in maintaining the soil health and

sustaining crop productivity. He also explained how the

present day cultivation using more of chemical fertilizers and

pesticides which is damaging soil health and soil ecology and

stressed the need for inclusion of organic manures, bio-

Celebration of Agriculture Education DayAgriculture Education Day was celebrated on 3 December, 2020

commemorating the Birth Anniversary of Dr. Rajendra Prasad,

First Agriculture Minister of Independent India. The Celebration

was organised by College of Horticulture, Bagalkot in the

Auditorium Hall of Main Campus, UHS, Bagalkot by following all

the SOP of COVID-19. Dr. T. B. Allolli, Registrar, UHS, Bagalkot

presided over the function. The President opined that the

Agriculture education is very important for youths for

development of our country. He also explained the role of

agriculture in the development of the country. Dr. M.S. Kulkarni,

Dean (PGS), UHS, Bagalkot delivering his speech emphasizedthat agriculture education needs to be implemented from primary education itself to impart awareness among the youth on

importance of agriculture education for human life. He also opined that it is impossible to live without agriculture. Dr. S.I. Athani,

DSW highlighted contributions and achievements in the field of agriculture education. Finally the function was ended with vote of

thanks speech by B.Sc. final year student. The programme was witnessed by staff, students and farm labours of University. The

entire programme was organized and conducted by the students.

Training Programme Cum Field Day on Weather Based Managementof Grapes at HREC, Vijayapur

Training programme cum field day on Weather based management of grapes was

organised at HREC, Vijayapur (Tidagundi) on 23.01.2021. Dr. S. G. Gollagi

Campus Head, welcomed the guests. The programme was inaugurated by Sri.

Ashok Allapur, President, Karnataka State Lime Board Indi and highlighted the

importance of export of grape in the world, since the district is known for its best

climate for cultivation of various fruit crops like Grape, Lime, Pomegranate, Ber

etc. The programme was graced by Dr. Y. K. Kotikal, Director of Extension, Dr. D.

R. Patil, Director of Research, Dr. Kulapati Hipparagi, ADRE, MHREC, UHS,

fertilizers and bio-pesticides for sustaining the health of soil for our future generations. The University officers, Teachers and

students have actively participated in the programme.

Sensitization Programme on Future Prospects of Horticulture at YadagiriAsensitization programme on future prospects of horticulture was organized at Yedalli, Yadagiri on 11.1.2021 in association with

Karnataka State Department of Horticulture. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. K. M. Indiresh, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor,

UHS, Bagalkot. During his inaugural address he stressed upon cultivation of new crops inYadagiri for uplifting the farmer's income.

HEEU, Bengaluru organized awareness programme on Terrace gardening in

collaboration with ATMA, Bengaluru Agriculture Department. Forty farm

women from Bengaluru North attended the programme. Dr. Swetha, B.S.

Extension Leader delivered the lecture on importance of Kitchen and terrace

gardening in family nutritional security to the farm women. Mr. Naveen,ATM and

Mrs, Bhavya BTM ofATMA, were present in the programme.

Bagalkot stressed upon the Value addition and processing of Horticultural crops.

Awareness Programme on Terrace Gardening at Bengaluru

On 25th January 2021 Ms. Fouzia Taranum, IAS, Director of Horticulture and

Mr. Rajendra Kumar Kataria, IAS, Principle Secretary of Horticulture and

Sericulture, GOK. Visited RHREC, Bengaluru Campus. Dr. K. M. Indiresh,

Training Programme on Scientific Production Technologies forHigh Yield in Cashew at Hogalgere

One Day Training Programme on Scientific Production Technologies for

High yield in Cashew was organized under SCSP project of AICRP on

Cashew scheme on 20.01.2021 at yeldur village of srinivasapura taluk. The

programme was inaugurated by Dr. D. R. Patil, Director of Research, UHS,

Bagalkot, Mr. V. Krishnamurthy, Rtd. Deputy Conservator Forest, Dr. R. K.

Ramachandra, Station Head and the local farmers by watering to cashew

plant. During the programme, Dr. D. R. Patil, Director of Research

highlighted the importance of cashew in plain parts of Karnataka and urged

the farmers to grow cashew as an alternative crop to mango. Different

Sri Raveendra, ADH, Yadagiri, Sri. Sundaresh, AHO, Sri. Pavankumar, AHO, Yadagiri, Progressive Farmers Dr. Gaded,

Sri Somanagouda, Sri Bhojanagouda were also present in the programme.

Importance of Productive biovoltine hybrids in quality cocoon production.

Dr. Anil Kumar, Scientist (SS&AC) gave information on INM in mulberry for

quality cocoon production. Deputy Director, Sericulture Sri Anjaneyagowda,
