State Department spokes- woman Jen Psaki said the decision to keep the embass- ies and consulates closed was ‘‘not an indication of a new threat’’. She said the continued closures were ‘‘merely an in- dication of our commitment to exercise caution and take appropriate steps to protect our employees, including lo- cal employees, and visitors to our facilities.’’ Diplomatic facilities will remain closed in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, among other countries, through Sat- urday, August 10. Teen on bashing charge AUCKLAND: A New Zea- land teenager has been charged with bashing a homeless Auckland man, who died four days later. The 17-year-old faced Auckland District Court yesterday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. His name has been sup- pressed. Police said the charge would likely be up- graded after the death of the teen’s alleged victim, Edwin Linder, at the weekend. Mr Linder, a New Zealan- der, spent much of his youth in South Africa and lived in Australia during his 20s. He survived a near-fatal beating outside an inner- Sydney fast food restaurant in 2001 in which he suffered brain damage. His family attempted to resettle him in Whanganui on his return to New Zea- land but say he was deter- mined to make his own way on the streets of Auckland. Mr Linder, 42, was found badly beaten last Wednes- day. He was taken to Auck- land City Hospital with severe facial injuries but died on Saturday. Both police and the vic- tim’s family argued sup- pression was unnecessary but Judge Anne Kiernan said the name ban would re- main until a further court appearance today. Horrific scene as car mows down tourists A memorial for 32-year-old Italian newlywed Alice Gruppioni on the Venice Beach boardwalk where she was killed LOS ANGELES: A New Zea- land tourist has described the horror of hearing the screams of people being mowed down by a car speed- ing along Los Angeles’ famed Venice Beach boardwalk. An Italian bride on her hon- eymoon was killed and 11 oth- ers were injured while the al- leged driver, 38-year-old Nathan Campbell, was ar- rested on suspicion of murder. He is in custody on $US1 mil- lion ($A1.13 million) bond. ‘‘It was chaotic,’’ New Zealander Stefan Dujakovic told Los Angeles TV station NBC4. ‘‘I heard all of the com- motion and screams.’’ The carnage occurred about 6pm on Sunday, with security footage from a cafe showing a man parking a Dodge Avenger vehicle and later returning to the car. Witnesses said the man then drove the vehicle around barriers to enter the boardwalk, which was pack- ed with hundreds of tourists and locals enjoying perfect summer weather. Horrified witnesses told how the driver purposely swerved the car to hit people. Aaron Mason, a tourist from England, suffered cuts on his legs after the car sped through the crowd, struck him and sent his body flying. ‘‘It was basically coming at me and everyone just started running,’’ Mr Mason said. ‘‘I turned around and looked over my shoulder and a guy has gone over the bon- net. His wheel has clipped me and I’ve gone flying.’’ The boardwalk is famous for the Muscle Beach outdoor gym, street vendors and carni- val atmosphere. As well as striking walkers on the board- walk, witnesses said the driver ran over street ven- dors, including 75-year-old psychic reader Linda Alvarez, who had a stall at Venice for decades and was being treated in an LA hospital. Authorities identified the dead victim as Alice Grup- pioni, 32, who was on her hon- eymoon from Bologna, Italy. Police fatally shoot armed teen NEW YORK CITY: Police in New York City have shot dead a 14-year-old US boy as he was allegedly chasing and shooting at another male be- fore dawn. Two rookie officers heard shots about 3am on Sunday, the New York Police Depart- ment said in a statement. The officers said they saw the teenager, identified as Bronx resident Shaaliver Douse, armed with a 9mm handgun, pursuing and fir- ing at the other young man. ‘‘Ordered to ‘drop the gun’ by the uniformed officers who identified themselves as police, the male . . . did not comply,’’ the statement said. ‘‘One of the officers dis- charged one round from his service weapon, striking the armed male in the lower left jaw. The male was pro- nounced DOA at the scene.’’ The two officers, aged 26 and 27 and with less than seven months’ experience on the force, were taken to the hospital due to trauma and ringing in their ears. Assad wants terrorism crushed DAMASCUS: Syria’s crisis will only be solved by stamp- ing out terror, President Bashar al-Assad says, in reference to rebels fighting his regime. In a rare speech on Syrian state television, Mr Assad also dismissed the National Coalition opposition group as a ‘‘failure’’ that could play no role in solving the country’s brutal war. ‘‘No solution can be rea- ched with terror except by striking it with an iron fist,’’ Mr Assad said. ‘‘I don’t think that any sane human being would think that terrorism can be dealt with via politics,’’ he added. ‘‘There may be a role for politics in dealing with ter- rorism pre-emptively,’’ he said, but added that once ter- rorism had arisen, it could only be struck out. In March 2011, a wide- spread protest movement calling for political change in Syria broke out. In response, the regime un- leashed a brutal crackdown. Pedophile skips off as pardon reversed King Mohamed VI RABAT: Morocco’s King says he is rescinding his pardon of a Spanish pedo- phile after an unusual bout of protests. It is the first time in re- cent memory that a Moroc- can sovereign has reversed a pardon. But the Spaniard, named by Morocco as Daniel Galvan Fina, is believed to now be in Spain, and it was unclear whether he will be brought back to Morocco. Late Sunday, King Moha- med VI said he had asked his justice minister to work with his Spanish counter- part to see how the pardon could be undone. On July 30, at the request of Spain’s King Juan Carlos, the Moroccan monarch par- doned 48 Spaniards who had been impris- oned there, in- cluding Fina, who was con- victed of rap- ing 11 children. The palace said in a statement the King had been unaware of the nature of the man’s crimes and had ordered a probe into his release. The investigation should ‘‘determine the responsibil- ities and the failures that led to this regrettable release,’’ the statement said. ‘‘The King was never in- formed, in any way or at any time, of the seriousness of the abject crimes of which the person concerned was convicted,’’ the palace said. The pardon sparked out- rage in the African country.
