Hornsby Dunlap Elementary Community, This is a great time to be a Hound Dog! Leadership and ca-pacity is building every day. Our students are organizing themselves into numerous leadership teams and it is with great joy and pleasure that I announce that Hornsby now has an active PTA! Our PTA was established on October 27 and we are excited about partnering with each of you. The PTA mission of helping every child reach their potential by engaging and empowering families to advocate for all chil-dren is a belief that we share and I am hopeful for building a strong home-school relationship. Congratulations to Hornsby Dunlap Elementary PTA Board Members; Mi-chelle Castillo, Rebecca Birch, Angelica Wikswo, and Caro-lyn Greene. We would like to thank them for their service to Hornsby Dunlap Elementary. Mark Estrada

October 24th -28th was national Red Ribbon Week.

Hornsby had an exciting week that was packed full of fun activities. Our students dressed up in different out-fits to showcase the Red Ribbon Week message. It is never too early to start teaching our students about

healthy decisions. Thank you Hornsby-Dunlap Elemen-tary School for making Red Ribbon Week a HUGE

success!!!!!!!!

We will reflect on what this looks like and how we attain this character trait at school as well as at home and in the com-munity. Lastly, we want to thank you for your support in your child’s development. You are a critical part of their education! Keep up the great work.

In math, we’ll finish up our unit with addition and subtrac-tion and then take our district landmark. Then, we’ll move on into related facts and fact families.

Finally, we’ll also start rehearsing for our 1st Grade Annual Christmas program that will be held in December. We have a very busy month ahead, but it’ll be lots of fun.

Wow! October just flew by! Thank you so much to all of the parents who came to our Book Character Pa-rade. We had lots of fun with Laura Numeroff’s books.

Now, it’s November! This month, our goal for reading is to have all of our stu-dents on level E. Make sure

The first nine weeks has come to an end and we are excited about the second nine weeks. Thank you for all the parents who attended their parent teacher conferences! It was wonderful getting to know all of you. In November, the students will be learning about pat-terns, reading temperatures, telling time on a clock, the sci-entific method, science tools,

reading strategies and devel-oping their writing skills. We also have many landmarks in November. We will be having out math landmark covering geometry and measurement on Nov. 9. After Thanksgiving break, we will be having our first round of MOCK STAAR test-ing for both Reading and Math. We will also be attend-ing our 3rd grade field trip to Bob Bullock IMAX on Tues-

day, November 22! The cost will be $4.00 per child. Finally, we invite you to join us at Math & Science night on November 3. Third grade will be in the library. We will be having activities to do with you and our child! We look for-ward to working with you and

Our first science mock test will be on November 3rd. Please remind your child to get plenty of rest that week. Also, encourage your child to use their ICE tools when completing their homework.

their volume. Our fourth grade scien-tists measured, calculated, analyzed, and graphed temperature 4 times every school day for one week. We noticed trends in the temperature – yes it is finally getting cooler. We also grew and measured plants as part of our study of the scientific method. Our fourth grade writers are con-tinuing to build upon all their writing skills. We have been exploring the wide variety of written text and their differing purposes. Our students have working on taking their first personal

narrative essay through the writing proc-ess, meanwhile mastering the writer’s craft skill of show, don’t tell. Students are learning to use components of figura-tive language and sensory detail to “paint a picture” of their stories. If we are not writing, we are reading. Our fourth graders are going to be starting to move into shared reading literatures circles in the near future. The groups of students will be reading the same novels, and then coming together in grand discussion to build upon a vari-ety of reading skills and strategies.

Fourth graders continue prac-ticing 2 digit X 1 digit and 2 digit X 2 digit multiplication in both number and word problems. We are also practicing identifying key words which help us determine which operations (add, subtract, multiply, or divide) to use to solve word problems. We built 3D rec-tangular prisms and calculated
