The first half of our summer term has been very busy so far especially with Classes 2 and 6 having sat their annual statutory tests, the SATs. As a school we are extremely proud of how hard the children in Class 6 in particular have worked towards these. Of course they will con- tinue to focus on the curriculum for the rest of the academic year as well as looking ahead to starting secondary school. However, they can also now enjoy the exciting things that will be happening during their remaining weeks at Shorne which include the annual residential trip to Avon Tyrrell and the end of year production “Porridge”. This week we have held a lot of sporting activities for the whole school as part of our Sports Week, including Sports Day which was slightly earlier this year. As previously advised, from September 2017 we will be extending the school day by 15 minutes and our new finishing time will be 3.20pm. If you have any issues or would like to discuss this further please make an appointment to see me. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. I hope that you all have a very enjoyable and relaxing half term holiday and look forward to seeing you all back safe and well again on Monday 5th June. With best regards Miss T Hewett

Netball

On Tuesday 28th March a

team of children from Classes

5 & 6 played in a netball match

against Cobham Primary

School. After a very fast moving match

the end score was 15-15. Well done to the

whole team.

On Thursday 30th March a netball match

took place after school with two teams

made up of a mix of teachers and girls

from Classes 5 & 6. After a very quick

moving and exciting match the end score

was 11-11. Thanks to everyone who took

part, teachers and pupils and Mrs Barham

for umpiring on the day!

Football

On Saturday 25th March a

team of boys from Classes 5 &

6 took part in the Easter 7’s

Football Tournament at River-

view Park School. We are ab-

solutely thrilled to announce that Shorne

won the trophy, which is their third trophy

of the year so far, beating Higham 1:0 in

the final. Well done boys.

Sports Hall Athletics

On Wednesday 17th May a

team of boys and girls from

Classes 3 and 4 attended Leg-

ends Sports Centre at Cas-

cades to take part in a Sports

Hall Athletics Competition. The children

each took part in three track and three

field events. The track events were a vari-

ety of obstacle relay races and the field

events varied from standing long jump to a

chest push (chest pass with a medicine

ball) to see who could get it the furthest.

We scored a very respectable 220 points

which put us 9th on the leader board. The

children represented the school impecca-

bly and a massive thank you goes to the

parents who stayed and supported. Great

effort all round.

Sports News

Infant Agility

On Thursday 18th May a team of

Class 2 boys and girls attended Leg-

ends Sports Centre at Cascades to

take part in an Infant Agility competition. The

children took part in a number of physical chal-

lenges which targeted various aspects of their

physical ability from taking part in a speed

bounce to running over mini hurdles. All the

children that took part put in a fantastic

amount of effort and took part in every activ-

ity with a smile on their face. After the chil-

dren had finished the rotations, they also took

part in an obstacle relay which was great fun.

The team finished 8th in the competition. Mr

Edwards was incredibly proud of the children

and for many of them it was their first time

representing the school.

Sports Week

During the week beginning Monday 22nd May we held

Sports Week.

On Monday 22nd May we had Coaches Day. We in-

vited coaches of football, cricket, tennis, golf, dance

and basketball into school. Special thanks to Mr

Clayden, Mrs Amos and Mrs Hunt, parents at our

school, who came in to run sessions.

Tuesday 23rd May was Inter House Olympics Day

where the whole school took part in a variety of ac-

tivities including shot put, hurdles, archery and dis-

cus.

On Wednesday 24th May Kevin Horlock, another par-

ent at our school and ex professional footballer,

came in to visit each class. He gave an inspirational

talk to the children about the importance of working

hard at school as well as following your dreams.

Thursday 25th May we held sports day for KS1 and

KS2.

Finally to conclude Sports Week on Friday 26th May

all the children have been invited to come into school

dressed in sporting attire or as their sporting hero.

Swattenden Residential Trip

During the week beginning Monday 24th April Class 5 went on a three day residential trip to

Swattenden, an outdoor education and residential centre located near the historic town of Cran-

brook. The location and facilities combine to provide quality learning opportunities through

working, playing and living together and the children are able to develop as individuals whilst in-

creasing their team spirit.

Whilst there, the children enjoyed many different activities such as orienteering, nightline, zip

line and high all aboard. Miss Chantry was incredibly proud of all of the children during this

year’s trip as they developed their independence and showed fantastic support for one another.

Class 4 Church Service

On Sunday 21st May

Class 4 led the Sunday

morning Church service

in the village of

Shorne. They spoke

about Moses and told

the story of the 10

commandments. Well

done to the class rep-

resentatives who did a

fantastic job.

Class R

Our topic this term

has been 'Why do

ladybirds have

spots?" The chil-

dren have read,

enjoyed and retold

many exciting sto-

ries including; Mad About Mini

Beasts by Giles Andreae and The

Bad Tempered Ladybird by Eric

Carle. Rabbit class have adven-

tured on a Mini Beast Hunt and

discovered many of the bugs

they have been learning about in

class.

There has been great excite-

ment learning about a butter-

fly's life cycle and a particular

favourite mini beast amongst the

children has been the centipede!

The children carefully recorded

mini beasts they discovered on

their Hunt and some were in-

spired to create their own bug

books full of sto-

ries, facts and

wonderful draw-

ings.

Cornerstones Curriculum

Following on from the successful introduction of the Cornerstones Cur-

riculum last term, each class would like to update you on what they have

been finding out about and inform you about the new topics for next

term.

Class 1

Year 1 have been look-

ing at the Splendid

Skies Cornerstones

topic. We've been

writing postcards to

Teddy the bear, look-

ing at the clouds and

the sky, discussing

the changes that hap-

pen between Spring

and Summer and look-

ing at weather poems.

We have also been

going to forest

schools every week

and we have been

looking at the changes

to the trees, making

pictures out of natu-

ral resources, identi-

fying different trees

and talking about the

animals we have seen

there.

Class 2

This term in Badger Class we have

been busy working very hard to-

wards our SATS, which

we have now completed.

We have also had lots

of fun learning about

different mini beasts

and their habitats. Mini

beast hunting and ex-

ploring our school grounds, as well

as at Warren Farm has been great

fun and we have found some very

interesting creatures. We have

researched what different mini

beasts like to eat and have learnt

about the life cycle of a honey bee.

We now have our own caterpillars

which we are watching transform

into butterflies and

have learnt about

this process. We

have also had lots of

fun making our own

mini beast hand pup-

pets, learning how to

design and sew, and

created our own special mini beast

using our skills on the computer.

Class 3

This term Eagles class have been learning a lot about rivers and water in our topic

"Flow". We have made models of river systems, analysed samples of

polluted water and even become junior newspaper reporters! We

have created art work based upon rivers and streams and also

wrote an amazing setting description of a waterfall racing through a forest.

Cornerstones Curriculum

Class 5

Our topic this term has been 'Time

Traveller'. We started the topic by tak-

ing photos of ourselves and aging them

to see what we might look like in fifty

years! We have also been completing

lots of creative writing focusing on dif-

ferent people's journeys through life.

The children produced some particularly

brilliant pieces of writing based on a

dance by a shadow theatre group called

Attraction (the winners of Britain's Got

Talent in 2013). Some of this writing is

on display in our classroom.

As part of our science unit looking at

the growth and development of humans,

we had a very special visitor! Mrs Nich-

ols, who used to teach at Shorne,

brought her 8-month-old baby girl,

Amelia, into our classroom. We had the

opportunity to look at photographs of

Amelia from birth until now and ask Mrs

Nichols questions about how Amelia has

changed and developed.

Class 4

This term class 4’s topic has

been Potions. We have had

lots of fun writing our own

spells with the help of Shake-

speare’s Macbeth and we have

written an alternative ending

for Romeo and Juliet. We have

also worked extremely hard

creating our own fantasy story

which included a magic potion.

In science we have investi-

gated the changing state of

chocolate to create our own

antidotes for our home made

potions and we have investi-

gated the viscosity of differ-

ent liquids. In history we

heard a gruesome recount of

an operation performed in

1811, before anaesthetic was

discovered, the lady fainted

because of the pain!

Class 6

The topic this term for

Class 6 has been ID. The

children have been work-

ing extremely hard on re-

searching their charac-

teristics and traits. The

children edited family

photos, merging them to-

gether to find resem-

blances between them-

selves and family mem-

bers at the same age.

These can be found on the

ID display in the school

hall.

They also received a visit

from Mrs Thomas who

talked about her career

as a Crime Scene Investi-

gator, an inspirational

learning opportunity which

engaged the whole class.

For your information the new topics for each class next

term in the Cornerstones Curriculum are:

FOSS fundraising events

FOSS have been very busy recently organising lots of fund raising

events for the children to enjoy.

A special thank you to organisers of the Shorne Disco Night (in

aid of the Ellenor Hospice) who have donated £100 to the school.

Also thank you for kind donations for equipment for Logan’s Den

and fans for the school.

On the last day of term, Friday 31st March, they organised a cake

sale after school together with an Easter Egg Hunt for the chil-

dren. The cake sale raised £109.00 and the Easter Egg Hunt

raised £120.00.

A Mothering Sunday stall was set up in Logan’s Den selling lots of

beautiful gifts for the children to purchase which raised the

amount of £155.00.

Thank you so much to all those parents who have been involved

with these events and raising valuable extra funds to benefit our

children at school.

In our October newsletter we wrote to advise

you of the school’s involvement in fundraising

for The Jack Howard Appeal. As many of you

will be aware Jack sadly passed away shortly

after this time. The Howard family have now

asked us to pass on a message to everyone who

helped fundraise for Jack.

“We would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We have felt overwhelmed by your support for our darling Jack and the in-credible fundraising in so many fantastic ways. Jack knew he was truly loved by our community, we will never forget the smile on his face when he was in hospital looking at all the fundraising pictures. If love could have saved Jack he would be here today. We are heartbroken to lose our darling Jack, your continuous support and generosity has given us some strength. The money that re-mains in the “Jack Howard Fund” will be put di-rectly towards research. Jack was so inspired by his consultant (who is working on a pioneering treatment) we will donate the money raised to this cause. We would like to continue to do a few fundraising events each year to remember Jack and donate the funds towards research. Jack’s amazing attitude, smile and positivity will live on forever and our aim is to cure other chil-dren from this cruel disease. A great big THANK YOU from us all, especially Jack.”

hold another workshop on Tuesday 11th July at 6.00pm. We hope to see more of you at this meeting as,

whatever their age, we can help you to find out more about what your children might be doing online and

give you some simple, practical and easy advice on the steps you can take as a parent to keep them as safe

as possible.
