�e smaller third sta� that appears as needed shows the sounding pitch of notes played on scordatura strings.

An arrow between two IPA symbols indicates agradual shi� from the �rst to the next. �is shi�ingshould smoothly emphasize all the intermediary vowel sounds.
Consonant brightness clef:
When singing the “f ” and the “ç” sounds, this clef indicates the relative brightness. �isis achieved by changing the shape of thelips and the position of the tongue inside the mouth. �e sound will be darker when a) the lipsare more closed (as though making a “u” vowel)and b) when the tongue is pressed down and back.�e sound is brighter when a) the lips are wide andopen (as though making an “i” vowel) and b) the tongue is placed close to the roof of themouth. As with the arrows between vowel sounds,the changes between dark and bright consonantsounds should be gradual, smooth, and exaggerated.
horas non numero nisi serenas is a common inscription on sundials. It poetically translates to “I count no hours but for those that are serene,” and more literally into “I do not tell time unless the sky is clear.” �e singer’sline is based on the �nal word in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (”ewig”), drawn out over the course of the piece into a series of regularly recurring utterances. If Mahler’s subject dissolves at the moment of death into nature, then that subjectivity merges with a set of phenomena whose time is beyond human psychological understanding. �e image of a sundial, inexorably yet, in the moment, imperceptibly tracing the passage of the sun through the sky is the focal point for natural events that we can understand but not experience. Further inspiration is drawn from Renaissance choral polyphony, especially in making a categorical connection between the cycles of the planetary bodies and human breathing, and in the ability of contrapuntal activity to create new musical experience rather than ful�lling received expectations.
