A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S

DESKMrs Michelle Cairelli

Welcome back after the first Term break. I hope you are all feeling refreshed and looking forward to the new Term.

It was a very busy holiday for me in regards to looking for replacements for Mr Yap in Middle School and Mr Creanor in Senior School. It was a blessing to have such quality applicants for both positions, although challenging to make the final decisions. We conducted 11 first round interviews in total and then had a few follow up meetings.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Fahey to the Head of Middle School. Mr Yap has left big shoes to fill but as he said himself, he wants his ceiling to be his successor’s floor and we are eager to move forward now with Mrs Fahey at the helm. Congratulations to Mrs Fahey, this was an especially competitive field of applicants and she demonstrated considerable strengths and expertise that she will bring to the role.

The Asssistant Head of Senior School position has been given to Mr Boyce, who is currently our Director of Studies. Congratulations to Mr Boyce. We know with absolute confidence that the Senior School Pastoral Care and Welfare is in great hands there. This of course does mean that we now have to advertise for a Director of Studies but of course Mr Boyce will be assisting us in the transition. As you are aware in Senior School we have interim measures in place, thanks to Mrs Evans returning from Vanuatu for a few weeks, which should give us sufficient time to find a quality replacement for both the Maths/Science position and the Director of Studies.

I have already met with the new Head of DALE, Gosford a few times and am delighted to be able to continue working closely with Mr Creanor. I still consider DALE students to belong to St Philip’s Christian College Gosford and so it doesn’t really feel like Mr Creanor has left at all. I look forward to a very fruitful and continued relationship with him doing God’s work. It was great to see him this week interacting with the Dale students, who are already relaxed into business as usual with their new Head of School.

With all these changes in leadership, I am convicted that I need to be very purposeful in my coaching and mentoring of our Senior Leaders, as well as leading well by example.

I have recently felt increasingly challenged by the teachings of Pete Scazzero on emotionally healthy spirituality and leadership. Our Executive Principal Mr Irwin recommended him to me and I will be taking my Senior Leadership team though fortnightly sessions of “The Emotionally Healthy Leader” manual. Mr Creanor will be joining us for this important personal and professional development. As leaders in Christian education, we have no problem professing and pursuing passion and purpose in our workplace, or passion and purpose, as we all see it. I am incredibly blessed with exceptional leaders who love the Lord, love our children and feel blessed to serve in this capacity in a Christian College. However, we are currently challenging each other to be intentional in all of our relationships and in particular in deepening our relationship with the Lord. Unless He is sincerely first in our lives it is so easy to slip into working harder and harder in our own strength, which has of course significant limitations. I want for myself and my leaders to be emotionally strong so that when life deals us the inevitable blows, that we are able to weather the storms and still give praise, and glory to God, be kind to others and be able to make wise and godly decisions. This can only be of benefit to them, to those close to them, to our students and in enhancing the culture of the College all round.

As we move closer and closer towards the vision God gave me to be a World Class School, All for His Glory by 2020, it could be tempting to be focussing only on academics, (by which I mean the pursuit of personal best). However, without our leaders being a truly godly example in how we manage our own lives in love and submission to God, then this would be a very hollow vision indeed. I want our college to bring glory to God as a world class employer as well. It seems a fitting focus for such a time as this as we look forward to some God appointed changes to our leadership team.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

Mr Cameron Johnston

Senior School

Welcome back to Term Two. I hope you all enjoyed a refreshing break after what was a long term last term. The students have done well in adjusting back into a regular routine very promptly.

Staffing ArrangementsAs you know our Assistant Head of Senior School, Mr Creanor, left at the end of last term to start his new role as Head of Campus for DALE at Gosford. This is a great opportunity for him and DALE are blessed to have him in the role.

I am pleased to say that we have a replacement. Mr Daniel Boyce will be moving roles from Director of Studies to become the new Assistant Head of Senior School. This is a great opportunity for Mr Boyce to become even more involved in the Pastoral Care element of schooling and we are very blessed to have him in this new role. This does mean, however, that we will need to search for a new Director of Studies. Please pray with me about filling this important position. Once this position of Director of Studies has been filled then Mr Boyce will be able to commence his new role as Assistant Head of Senior School.

I am also pleased to announce that Mrs Frankham will be Acting Year Ten Advisor, taking over from Mr Creanor for an interim period, until Mr Boyce is able to pick this role up in the near future. Mrs Frankham has been working alongside Mr Creanor with Year Ten over the last couple of years and she is excited to be working with the Year 10 students in this capacity.

ANZAC ServicewThe Senior School students led the School ANZAC Day Service on Tuesday very well. The event was a great reminder of the sacrifice and the service of many men and women that have gone before us in order to protect our shores and the livelihoods of others. My thanks to Mr Brown for his organisation of the event.

During the holidays a number of Senior School Students also represented the College in the Anzac Day march through the streets of Gosford. Once again it was a great opportunity for us to reflect on those that marched into the atrocities of war and hear of their experiences through the service that followed at the memorial.

Senior SchoolSenior School Facebook Have you ever had a conversation with your child about how their day was and received little more than a grunt or a monosyllabic response? Well, commencing this Term the Senior School will be trialling a special Senior School Facebook group whereby you will be able to see more of what the students get up to during the day while they are at school. Various information will be posted during the week sharing some classroom work or activities, as well as any information regarding major Senior School events.

To join the private Senior School Facebook group you must be a parent of a student and students are not invited to join the group. If you type “Senior School St Philip’s Christian College Gosford 2018” into the search bar at the top of your Facebook page (see image) it will direct you to a search page. If the group is not the first option at the top of the page then press the “Groups” filter at the top of the page and it should then be the first option. When you ask to join it will require you to identify who you are a parent/guardian of, once this is submitted then an administrator of the group will look at your request and when accepted you will have access to the group where you can see posts from staff which you can also post to and comment on.

If you have any questions please contact Mr Kurt Maher.

It will be another busy but exciting term. Please consult the school calendar for specific details relating to such things as NAPLAN, Senior School Examinations (Year 9 & 10), and the Athletics Carnival to name a few. I hope you have a great term.
