PONY: Wendamar Flirt (Welsh Mountain)

“This is me and my pony, Flirty. I love her because she helps me learn to ride and we go to shows and

pony club and have fun. I love to help mummy look after her and sometimes we have to feed her and pick up poo in the rain! Flirty is my best friend.”

Winter is here!

Wha What does this

mean for your pony? Horses begin to grow their coats when the days get shorter, not as the

temperature drops as many believe. This is because a horse must be-

gin to develop his coat long before winter sets in. It works like this: As

the days shorten and the retinas receive fewer hours of daylight, they

trigger the brain to release extra melatonin, a hormone that prompts

the hair follicles to produce more hair.

But why is it that during a cold snap your horse suddenly appears

fluffier? Although it may seem that his hair multiplied overnight, it

really didn’t. That fuller coat is just your horse’s clever way of

creating insulation. The hairs lift up to trap the warm air against his

skin.
