Mr Kerwin - Principal

I would like to acknowledge the Jagara people who are the traditional custodians of this land. I would also like to pay respect to the elders past and present of the Jagara nation and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people present.

Special guests, Moorooka State School Staff, Parents of our Year 7 students and, our Guests of Honour, the Year 7 students.

Good evening.

Friday December 13 2013 marks the conclusion of eight years of primary education for our graduating Year 7 students. This is a milestone worthy of celebration.

This is time of both excitement, as these great students prepare to move on to the next phase of their lives, and also of sadness as we farewell them as members of the Moorooka State School community. For 27 families here tonight, this graduation ceremony marks the end of a variety of associations, both short and long, with our school. Whether only for a short amount of time, or for families with us for

more than a decade, we thank you for the support that you have given the school during this time – we have enjoyed having you as a part of school and the contributions and lasting memories you have made.

2013 has been a wonderful year.

We have achieved so much as a school. While our NAPLAN results across the school have come ahead in leaps and bounds, this group of talented Year 7 students demonstrated growth in all areas at or above the nation’s growth rate. A wonderful achievement which can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of both the students and their two fabulous teachers, Mrs Trudi Tobin and Ms Karina Talbot.

In other highlights this year, our senior students have worked closely with Deana from the Brisbane City Council to successful manage the reduction of waste in our school and create a great worm farm and composting industry in the school.

Our Year 7 students have also participated in wonderful leadership days throughout the year. Not only did these days provide an extension to our senior curriculum, they were character building and provided opportunities not normally afforded to primary-aged students.

Again, I thank the year 7 teachers for the inspiration and encouragement they have provided through organising these days.

The biggest highlight of the year for me by far is attending camp with our senior students. As has become customary with the Year 7

students, the battle lines at camp are drawn as we hit the commando trail and fall face first into the mud. Deston was crowned this year’s victor in being the first to cover the principal in brown slime, with Freya taking out a very close second.

Spending four days at Moogerah Dam with Mrs Tobin, Ms Talbot, Ms Bowden and the Year 7 students was the best way to end Term 3 and head out on leave.

So many fond memories.Ali had so many changes of clothes he could have opened a clothing store.

To be honest, I think “fun” is not a descriptive enough word for our camp this year.

Our student leaders have had a great year this year. Mrs Goodwin and I will sincerely miss all of you. Truth be known, we had a little giggle at the start of the year when each of you nervously spoke into the microphone for the first time, but by the end of the year you’ve all become professionals at it. Things certainly changed for young Jackson Miller when those braces came off – there was no stopping his confidence and that very handsome smile!

Zuleka, you’ve brought us all sheer joy this year as you’ve come to learn the English language. And a special thank you to Simone, and the other girls, who took you under their wing and helped you throughout the year

I will always be glad I gave James Wilson a special principal’s ruler in Year 5: what a difference that made to neatening up his bookwork.

Kyrianthe and Pia took the time out every day to greet me as I arrived at school. Alyssa would be with them wearing her Fooman glasses. It only took me 6 months to realise those glasses were not real.

Saeid got jealous of my new car, and then Harry would keep an eye on my new car every afternoon waiting for mum.

For four years Jayme Hill’s mum has sat on the step outside the staffroom waiting for Jayme’s day to finish: on Friday we will smile and have a laugh for the very last time.

Christopher Jackson! If I just said “Chapter 41, Graduation Day”, Christopher Jackson! will know exactly what I’m talking about.

Even if not mentioned individually, I do have fond memories of every single one of these wonderful Year 7 students.

Year 7s: today you leave the Moorooka nest. Having been a Deputy in a high school, I can tell you that your experiences will be different.

I know you’re keen to be grown up. I know you’re eager to move on to high school. But from experience I also know for the first little while you’re going to realise just how special things have been over the past eight years, and especially, the last twelve months at Moorooka State School.

During the last year your teachers have looked after you. They’ve gone the extra mile for you every day you were here. They’ve laughed with you, they’ve cried with you, and they’ve ensured you made it to the end of the year.

Mrs Tobin and Ms Talbot are going to miss you, so make sure before you finish your week you let them know how much they have meant to you this year.

2013… The Year That Was…

Thank you to all of the wonderful students of 6/7KT for making my first year at Moorooka one to remember (for good reasons!). I have loved being your teacher and have learnt many things from all of you. You have patiently corrected my spelling and Maths problems on many occasions, and have maintained a positive classroom, even through the tough times! I have been so proud of each and every one of you throughout the year as you have faced challenges, both academically and outside of the classroom, and have persevered. I will always remember this class very fondly.

To begin with the lovely young ladies…

Adeline, I have loved your dedication to getting your tasks finished, spending many lunch hours eagerly working independently – this will be a great habit to continue in high school. Jazmin, your wonderful madness has been contagious and has lifted my spirits – your positivity is such an asset. Pia, your peaceful spirit has graced our classroom everyday, what a beautiful gift to share! Yianna, who will remember to collect our rolls next year?! Your organisation has been

second to none – another wonderful skill to take with you into highschool.

Alyssa, I am constantly on edge in the classroom due to your outstanding scaring skills. While this has traumatized me, it has also made me scream in delight (maybe don’t take this skill to highschool though!). Jaymie, your sunny smile always lights up the room and you have been such a keen helper this year– thank you! Ezmi, I have loved your positivity and the way that you always put your heart into your writing (especially poetry!) – you have a way with words. Heidi, another positive and sunny gal! You also have a peaceful spirit and a cheeky sense of humour – thank you for sharing them with us!

And of course, our handsome young men…

Ali, you have been a leader amongst friends and an inquisitive learner – wonderful qualities for your highschool journey. Deston, a.k.a ‘Keen Bean’, I have loved your enthusiasm and speed during Maths and other subjects – what a focused student you have become! Ryley, another switched-on learner – thank you for all of your interesting facts and ideas that you have shared with us this year. Jack, I have loved your academic focus and creativity, especially in writing. I look forward to the day when I can see The Adventures of Jeffrey the Invisible Hippo on the New York Times Bestseller list. Connor F, you are another peaceful student with many interesting hobbies – I am proud that you have always tried your best in everything!

Reza, I have loved how focused you are on achieving your very best – I know that you will absolutely excel in highschool! S.J, I am still intrigued by your ‘drop crotch skinny jeans’ and hope that you find

some pants that fit you properly in the future (also, you have been an absolutely lovely student and have achieved great results this year!). Vikneel, you have such a talent for performing and writing (even though all of your accents sound Irish) – I expect to see you rapping on Australian Idol one day soon! James M, another gorgeous young man who has been so peaceful and focused this year – you will absolutely love highschool! Anthony, you have featured in far too many of my dreams/nightmares throughout the year, and I’m positive it’s because I hear you talk approximately every 3.5 seconds. Keep up your thirst for knowledge and discussion! James W, what a helpful gentleman you are! You are a very capable student and have impressed me many times this year with your focus and achievements!

Pheww! What a lot of compliments! I do sincerely hope that you all enjoy your journeys throughout highschool and beyond. Whenever you see a skinny dog, just think of me and remind yourself that Miss Talbott thinks you are wonderful!

What is it that makes a year special? Yes, this year had a 13 in it (my lucky number), but there are so many things that will make me hold this year so dear.

When Zulekha called out “Mrs Tobin, I now understand English!” our spirits were lifted by her joy. As Michael shared Come fly with me jokes from Youtube on our walks to LOTE, it always drew a smile. Zahraa won us tickets to the Afghanistan Treasures exhibition, and we realized how ‘many’ can enjoy the benefit of the hard work of ‘one’.

The quiet beauty of Alexandra’s drawings, took our breath away. Angus’ love of hard work and aiming high drew our admiration. Chris’ absorption in his inventions and his uncontrollable laughter made us all smile - often. Fynn’s knowledge about everything enriched our lessons, as did the possibility that he would be turned into a goldfish wearing a tuxedo!

Elizabeth’s ability to set up cooking activities and science experiments had us in awe. Jorah’s fairy drawings and love of K-pop broadened our world. Harry’s love of politics helped our lessons hum. Gabriel quietly went about the business of being everyone’s friend and achieving his goal to be in the Metropolitan West Hockey Team. Lleyton and

Thank you to you, the students of 7 TT and your families, for working together with our school to make it a great place to learn and make friends.

Kyrianthe took on any job given to them with a smile, showing all of us the meaning of friendship. (I will miss the 10:45 am daily call “Me and Kyri have to go”). Who will set up the lunchtime music next year??

Sameullah kept us all on our toes during our insect field study – what would he collect and show us at close range next? Francis’ love of soccer dazzled us all. Tatiana moved us with her eloquent writing and Philip moved us with his story about a bird he captured that “Bit me and flew away”. Not quite the moving ending we expected, but we laughed for a long time. Thanks Phil!

Mohammed’s exceptional manners and behaviour showed his personal growth and determination. Jackson quietly went about the business of being an academic, a leader, an artist and singer. Simone smiled and encouraged us with her warmth and concern, keeping up with all that she needed to do as well. Saied made us laugh with his dramatic performance skills, and then floored us with his knowledge of all things scientific. Beniam showed us all what hard work can achieve, and he kept smiling during the challenging times. Zachary just kept getting taller, telling jokes on the side and quietly laughing at my jokes. (Thanks for the encouragement Zac!) Samuel quietly took on personal challenges such as dressing up and speaking in public. These were not small achievements. Freya showed us what leadership means, always putting herself last while juggling a whole truckload of commitments. Stella always saw what needed doing and her desire to help and support others contributed to our classroom significantly. Robbie ran our kitchen on camp, and acted as my Maths fact checker all year. Robbie your talent is amazing.

Thank you to you, the students of 7 TT and your families for working together with our school to make it a great place to learn and make friends.

Thanks to Miss Talbott and 6/7 KT for being great learning partners. I really appreciate all of your help and enthusiasm. It has been a beautiful and fulfilling year. To all of you, the wonderful 7 TT, best wishes for a future that builds on what you have learned together, here at Moorooka!

When I sat back down Saied who was sitting near me whispered while giving me a poke said “You Did Good”. From that day on Sameh, Simone and I had our saying ‘You Did Good!’
