ABO U T TH E CO N D U C TO RBrandon Williams is a DMA student in choral conducting at Michigan State University and arecipient of the prestigious University Enrichment Graduate Fellowship Award. As a graduateassistant, he assists with the MSU Men’s Glee Club, undergraduate conducting, and directs anundergraduate a cappella vocal ensemble. In addition to his duties on campus, Mr. Williamsconducts the Ingham County Festival Chorale. Prior to Michigan State University, Mr.Williams taught middle and high school in the Ladue School District in St. Louis, MO.Through juried application, two of his Ladue ensembles received invitations to perform at the2010 and 2013 Missouri Music Educator's Association conventions. The Ladue Middle SchoolTreble Chamber Singers were selected to be a featured ensemble on the GIA DVD titled“Creative Positioning of Singers”. Mr. Williams has also held positions with MaryvilleUniversity, the St. Louis Children’s Choirs, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Mr.Williams appears frequently as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. He was awardedthe 2009 MCDA Prelude Award for excellence in choral music and an Outstanding TeacherAward from the University of Missouri-Columbia Honors College. Mr. Williams received aBachelor's Degree from Western Illinois University and a Master's Degree from the Universityof Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a member of the National Association for MusicEducation and the American Choral Directors Association.
ABOUT THE ACCOMPANISTMichael Frazier received a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from CedarvilleUniversity under the direction of Dr. John Mortensen. He also received a Master’s Degree inPiano Performance/Accompanying from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville under thedirection of Dr. Linda Perry. Mr. Frazier is an accompanist and adjunct faculty member atMissouri Baptist University. He serves as accompanist for the St. Louis Children’s Choirs, theMain Street United Methodist Church in Alton, IL, and the Ladue School District. Mr. Frazieris a private piano instructor, and has served as musical director and accompanist for severaltheaters in the St. Louis metro area.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORPhilip developed a passion for singing early in life, and was an active member of the CrestviewMiddle and Marquette High School choral programs. He is the founder of the Marquette HighSchool Gospel Choir, and was the president and director of the Saint Louis University Gospel Choirfor five years. He continued vocal training at Saint Louis University under the direction of Dr. JeralB. Becker and became a member of the Saint Louis University Mastersingers. He performed the roleof Raphel in The Creation, King Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and held the lead roleof Elijah in Elijah. He was a member of the chorus and understudy for King Balthazar in LyriCoOpera Company’s 2004 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. He was a member of the SaintLouis American Kantorei Choir. Philip received his BS/BA in Business Marketing and Music VocalPerformance from Saint Louis University in 2005 and Masters in Music Education at WebsterUniversity in 2010. He presently is working on his PhD in Music Education from the University ofMissouri-Columbia, and is an active member of MMEA and ACDA. He has held teaching positionsin the Ferguson-Florissant and Rockwood School Districts. In 2007, he received the position asCoordinator of Voice at COCA and is currently in charge of COCA’s voice program, where he hasalso musically directed several productions. Other directorial credits include Marquette HighSchool, McClure High School, The Children’s Workshop Theatre, Spotlight Productions, and TheSaint Louis Metropolitan Police Department Choir. Philip is thankful for the many musicalopportunities he has been afforded and honored to work with such talented musicians.
ABOUT THE ACCOMPANISTKhalid McGhee, a native of Saint Louis, began his piano studies at age 11 at Brittany Woods MiddleSchool, with piano pedagogue, Dr. Curtis Duncan. At age 14, he was accepted into OrchestratingDiversity, an intensive music-training program for minority youth, where he studied piano andviolin. McGhee has earned the highest rating, all four years of high school, at the Missouri All-StateSolo and Ensemble Festival. He also was accepted into the Missouri All-State High School HonorsChoir his senior year. McGhee has performed as a piano soloist all over the Saint Louis Area innationally renowned venues including Powell Symphony Hall, The Sheldon Concert Hall, and TheFox Theatre. He is currently a sophomore piano performance major at the University of Columbia-Missouri School of Music. He studies under the tutelage of Dr. Paola Savvidou.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORMs. L. Michelle Howard joined the Lindbergh Schools Orchestra staff in 1997. Musicand education have always been a strong presence in Michelle’s life, as both of herparents are educators. Michelle graduated from Butler University with Honors in StringEducation in 1992 and completed her Master of Arts degree with emphasis in MusicTheory and Orchestration at Webster University in December 2009. Michelle has beenan Orchestra Teacher/Director for the past 22 years, spending the last 17 years with theLindbergh School District. Currently, Michelle directs the Truman and Sperreng MiddleSchool Orchestras and the following extracurricular ensembles: Elementary HonorsOrchestra (5th grade strings), The Sperreng/Truman Fiddlers (a 80-100 member ensemblewith full string compliment), The Colonial Fiddlers and The Advanced Fiddlers.Michelle is a member of the Metropolitan Orchestra of St. Louis and attends fiddleworkshops/jams at the St. Louis Folk School. In addition to music related activities,Michelle spends time fishing in Northern Wisconsin and enjoys photography, cookingand drawing.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORDr. James Richards is Professor of Music and Senior Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts andCommunication at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He holds a Ph.D. from the Eastman Schoolof Music of the University of Rochester and degrees in orchestral conducting and music theory andthe Performer's Certificate in Violin from the University of Texas at Austin. He studied orchestraland opera conducting with Walter Ducloux, Paul Vermel, and Gustav Meier, music theory andcomposition with Joseph Schwantner, Robert Gauldin, Kent Kennan, and Karl Korte, and wasselected to participate in the Conductor's Program of the Aspen Music Festival. Dr. Richards isconductor and music director of the Gateway Festival Orchestra as well as of the Saint LouisChamber Orchestra and the University of Missouri-St. Louis Orchestra. He also was conductor ofthe Kirkwood Symphony Orchestra for nineteen seasons. He has appeared frequently as a guestconductor on the Saint Louis Symphony Discovery Series, and in 2009, conducted the New Yorkpremiere of the music theatre work, Booth!, by Harbach, Coker, and Yordy, at the Skirball Centerfor the Performing Arts. In February, 2013, Dr. Richards conducted the stunningly choreographedperformances of Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Nashville Ballet, MADCO, St. Louis Bach Society,St. Louis Children’s Choirs, and UMSL student and faculty musicians. As a violinist, Dr. Richardsperforms regularly with the Bach Society of Saint Louis and the Dance St. Louis Orchestra and alsohas played with the Saint Louis Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Memphis Symphony, OklahomaCity Symphony, and Austin Symphony. For ten years, he was first violinist in the Landolfi StringQuartet. Dr. Richards is past-President of the Missouri Association of Departments and Schools ofMusic (MADSM). He has served the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) at the state andnational levels in a variety of capacities, chaired the Merle J. Isaac International CompositionContest and was President of the Missouri Chapter of ASTA. Dr. Richards is a recipient of the St.Louis Suburban Music Educator's Association's Merit Award "in recognition of significantcontributions for the advancement of music education," the MoASTA Artist/Teacher of the YearAward, and the 2009 Faculty Excellence Award from the UMSL College of Fine Arts andCommunication.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORKirk D. Moss, Ph.D., holds an appointment as an Associate Professor of Musicand Chair of the Music Education Department at the Lawrence University (WI)Conservatory of Music. He is a past national president of the American StringTeachers Association, thrice chaired the ASTA National Orchestra Festival, andserved on ASTA’s Executive Board. Moss has appeared as a guest conductor,clinician, or adjudicator in more than thirty states. The University of FloridaSchool of Music awarded him an Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award, andhe has received four ASTA National Citation for Leadership & Merit awards.With twelve years of experience teaching elementary, middle, and high schoolorchestras, groups under his direction have earned distinction at state, national,and international events. One of his former high schools honors him byannually awarding a college string scholarship in his name. ABOUT THE CONDUCTORJim Widner is the former bassist with the Stan Kenton Orchestra and has performed withClark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Mulgrew Miller, Louis Bellson, Randy Brecker, BillWatrous, Marilyn Maye, and an appearance before former President Bill Clinton. He wasa faculty member of the Kenton camps for 10 years and helped Stan organize and expandhis camps from California to other locations across the United States. A graduate of theUniversity of Missouri, Jim also holds a Master’s Degree from Memphis State Universityand has done post graduate work at the University of North Texas. In 1999 students atthe University of Missouri renamed the music wing of the Fine Arts Residential College"Widner House," in honor of him. "The Jim Widner Big Band," whose recordings havereceived critical acclaim, also hosts a number of jazz camps each summer. Jim hasperformed at the world famous Lionel Hampton and Montreaux Jazz Festivals and servesas guest conductor for numerous All-State Jazz Bands. Jim is currently Artist inResidence/Coordinator of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. He alsomaintains an ambitious clinic and festival schedule at high schools and collegesthroughout the United States. This includes a series of summer jazz camps, spearheadedby members of the Jim Widner Big Band, which records with Chase Music Group. Theircritically acclaimed CD’s include "Yesterdays and Today," "Body and Soul," and "Live,"the Jim Widner Big Band Rides Again," and the band’s newest CD, "Flying High."

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORReginald ("Reggie") Thomas joined the MSU College of Music as professor ofjazz piano in 2011 after nearly 20 years as professor of music at SouthernIllinois University-Edwardsville. He regularly appears as a guest artist atcollegiate jazz festivals around the country, including those hosted by LawrenceUniversity, the University of South Florida, and Texas Tech University. He hasalso performed internationally in Canada, Italy, Poland, Senegal, and England.He can be seen fronting his own groups (Mardra/Reggie Thomas Ensemble;OGD) on both piano and Hammond organ and performing with other artistsincluding Ann Hampton Callaway and the Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker Project.His recordings include work with Clay Jenkins, Kim Richmond, and ClarkTerry/Mike Vax, as well as his own recordings "Fade to Blue" with his wife,Mardra (MaxJazz), "Standard Time" (Victoria) and "4" (Jazz Compass). He isalso a consultant/clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center, working with theEssentially Ellington Program and the Band Director Academy. He has servedon several summer jazz faculties across the country and abroad including theInternational Association for Jazz Education Teacher Training Institute, theBirch Creek Music Center, the Eastman School of Music Summer Jazz Camp,the Summer Jazz Academy in Chodziez, Poland, and, most recently, theBarbican Center in London.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORFor the past 27 years, Mr. Larry Johnson has been the band director at St. JosephSchool in Cottleville Mo. His program involves over 240 children with fiveensembles. He has also directed the St. Dominic High School Jazz Ensemble for17 years. Larry Johnson is the Saxophone instructor at Lindenwood University.He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and attended the University of Missouri-St.Louis and graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in 1984. As a musician,he began working as a professional saxophonist at the age of 13. Larry hasbeen performing in area nightclubs, festivals, and charitable functions for thelast 38 years. He has performed on stage with Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Bellson,Johnny Johnson, Brett Spainhour and local musicians Carolbeth True and JimManley. He is a recording artist for the “Victoria Jazz” label and has recordedtwo CD’s as a leader and over 40 times with various other artists. Currently, heworks regularly with a variety of area groups including Carolbeth True, Fantasy,Wild, Cool and Swinging and Charlie B Jazz. He works as a clinician,adjudicator, and private lesson teacher in the area. Larry Johnson has served invarious leadership positions including St. Louis Metro District Music Educatorsand MO-IAJE. Currently, Larry serves as the Pass President of Metro DistrictEight. Mr. Johnson was chosen for the Outstanding Teacher Award from theArchdiocese in 2004. He has been nominated eight times for “Who’s WhoAmong American Teachers”. Professional affiliations include MENC, MMEA,JEN, MBA, and Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Johnson lives in St. Charles, Missouri withwife Cindy and daughter Natalie.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTORJohn P. LaCognata was appointed Director of Bands/Assistant Professor of Music at the Universityof North Carolina Wilmington in 2010. At UNCW, his responsibilities include conducting the WindSymphony, Chamber Winds, and Pep Band; teaching applied trumpet, instrumental techniques, andconducting; directing the UNCW Honor Band Festival and UNCW Summer Honor Band Workshop,and administering the entire band program. In addition to his work at UNCW, he conducts theWilmington New Horizons Concert Band in association with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute(OLLI) and the UNCW Division of Public Service and Continuing Studies. Dr. LaCognata receivedhis Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Illinois (1986), Master of Musicin Trumpet Performance from Auburn University (1989) and PhD in Music Education with anemphasis in Wind Conducting from the University of Florida (2010) where he was awarded aDoctoral Teaching Fellowship. Prior to his appointment at UNCW, Dr. LaCognata has held avariety of teaching positions throughout his twenty-seven year career as a music educator. At thecollegiate level, he served on the faculties of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, LouisianaState University, and Iowa State University. At the secondary level, he held positions at HillcrestHigh School (Country Club Hills, Illinois), Tavares High School (Tavares, Florida), Cypress CreekHigh School (Orlando, Florida), and Winter Park High School (Winter Park, Florida). Concertbands under Dr. LaCognata’s direction have performed at the Bands of America National ConcertBand Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Florida Music Educators' Association Conference inTampa, Florida, and most notably, the 60th Anniversary of the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in2006. Marching bands under his leadership have made appearances at the Autozone Liberty Bowl inMemphis, Tennessee, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship inPhoenix, Arizona, and the Sylvania Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. LaCognata is anactive adjudicator, clinician and performer. He has served as a guest conductor for bands and honorbands throughout the United States. He is a member of the UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet as well asthe Cape Fear Brass. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors NationalAssociation, the National Association for Music Education, the International Trumpet Guild, NorthCarolina Music Educators Association, and the North Carolina Bandmasters Association.
