Honor Roll of Donors2015/2016
Dear Friends of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School,
The 2015/2016 school year saw tremendous growth and change and Mount Carmel. Upon the retirement of Kathleen Sipes, I was happy to come home and serve as the Interim President after a several-year hiatus in the daily operations of the school. Improvements and new programs characterized the year, as we prepared to offer new academic programs, start new building projects, and improve existing facilities. I hope you will enjoy reading more about these exciting changes in the following pages.
This year, the 33 seniors from the Class of 2016 were awarded 2.9 million in college scholarships and are attending institutions such as Brown University, University of Massachusetts, Drexel University, Loyola University of Maryland, Stevenson University, Towson University, and Salisbury University. Our seniors left our halls well-prepared for the rigors of college, and earned 95 college credits before graduation.
I am honored that my last act as President is to thank all of our generous donors who made all of our feats this year possible. Without the support of our generous alumni, faculty, parents, and friends, we would not be able to develop successful students who are invigorated with faith, infused with knowledge, and inspired to serve.
On behalf of the students, faculty, staff, and School Board of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, I thank you for your generosity. May God bless you and your commitment to Catholic education and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Sincerely,Rev. Monsignor Robert L. HartnettInterim PresidentPastor, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish

Upper School Students Participate in #GivingTuesdayFor the first time this year, Mount Carmel participated in #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. #GivingTuesday is always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and this year was celebrated on December 1.
The Upper School student body was asked to lead the campus’s participation in the day. Students in grades six through eight were asked to make a donation of $1, freshmen $2, sophomores $3, juniors $4, and seniors $5. The students were also instrumental in leading the push on social media through posting “Selfless Selfies” with the reasons they chose to give back to Mount Carmel. A large group of students stayed at school late into the evening to make phone calls to alumni and parents to ask them to participate.
Mount Carmel raised almost $4,000 towards the Annual Appeal on #GivingTuesday. Please save the date for next year – Tuesday, November 29, 2016.
Stephania Long, Class of 2017, donated and volunteered to make phone calls on
#GivingTuesday.
Jake Brack, Class of 2018, takes a break fromhis lunch for a Selfless Selfie.
Gunner Settar and Ethan Fabyan, Class of 2021, show their OLMC pride on
#GivingTuesday.

Sports Medicine ProgramStarts at Mount CarmelThe Upper School is about to embark upon an exciting new venture - the start of a new Sports Medicine Education Program. The new academic track in grades 9 through 12 will begin in the fall with 10 students who were accepted into the program.
Mr. Josh Lamont, MS, ATC/L, CSCS, Athletic Trainer at Mount Carmel, will serve as the program’s coordinator. Mr. Lamont explains, “The Sports Medicine Education Program offers Our Lady of Mount Carmel students the opportunity to discover and learn the science behind various medical and health-related fields, thereby opening doors to careers in medicine. Positions in the health professions continue to explode, and our students have expressed great interest in working in these fields. This program will offer the most recent evidence-based curriculum along with hands-on opportunities and presentations from professionals in a variety of medical settings.”
Students will complete a variety of general and core classes relating to the science of the human body, along with a 30-week practicum in athletic training and conditioning. Students will practice hands-on through basic first aid and sports medicine on fellow students in the athletic program under Mr. Lamont’s supervision.
The addition of the Sports Medicine Education Program allows another avenue for our students to prepare for college and find their academic area of interest. We look forward to where our inaugural class takes their training beyond the walls of Mount Carmel.
Mr. Lamont and members of the Sports Medicine Club in the Athletic Training Room.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is grateful to Joey Zarachowicz, a winner of the third annual BGE Captain Mercaptain Natural Gas Safety Hero Challenge. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade in area schools were invited to submit drawings of Captain Mercaptain, BGE’s natural gas safety hero. Online public voting determined the grand prize winner and a grade-level winner.
Joey’s drawing won the grade-level prize for first grade entries. BGE present-ed Our Lady of Mount Carmel School with a $5,000 donation that will be used to purchase a new STEM textbook series and to make improvements to our Lower School STEM lab.
Joey Zarachowicz with Mrs. Shea, Lower School Art Teacher, and Mrs. Olszewski, Lower School Principal.

Theresa F. Truschel Foundation Awards Grant for New PlaygroundIn April, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School was awarded a matching grant from The Theresa F. Truschel Charitable Foundation to build a new age-appropriate playground for our Early Learning and Childcare Program students. This grant will match up to $20,000 of any donations received for the playground project.
Early Learning and Childcare Program students and staff are eagerly awaiting the upcoming construction of this new play area in the fall. Sammy, a student in the program, said, “I can’t wait to slide.
Located next to the rectory on the Old Eastern Avenue side of campus, the new playground will be named The Theresa F. Truschel Early Learning Playground in honor of this generous donation. For more naming opportunities for this project, please contact Kim Becker Cooper, Director of Advancement.
Sammy and Olivia, Early Learning students, enjoy water play on a hot summer day on the site of the future Theresa F. Truschel Early Learning Playground.
