Traverse City is named after theGrand Traverse Bay, which thecity heads. The bay earned itsname from 18th century Frenchvoyagers who made la grandetraverse or "the long crossing"across the mouth of the GrandTraverse Bay.

In 1847, Captain Boardman ofNaperville, Illinois, purchasedthe land at the mouth of theBoardman River at the head ofthe west arm of the bay. Dur-ing that year the captain, hisson, and their employees builta dwelling and sawmill nearthe mouth of the river. In 1851

the Boardmans sold the sawmillto Hannah, Lay & Co (PerryHannah, Albert Tracy Lay and

James Morgan), who improvedthe mill greatly. The increased

investment in the mill attractedadditional settlers to the newcommunity.

    Climate

Its location on the 45th paral-lel is tempered by the strongand moderating effects of LakeMichigan and Grand TraverseBay, which have a particularlynoteworthy effect on the pen-insulas that branch north ofthe city. As a result they haveviticulture and Cherry orchards.Consequently, it generally ex-

periences warm, mild summersand severe winters. Lake Michi-

gan especially, but also GrandTraverse Bay, greatly impact thearea's diverse coastal weatherpatterns, which occasionallyconsist of sudden and/or largeamounts of precipitation duringthe seasonally active periods.Lake-effect snowfall constitutes alarge percentage of the total an-nual snow accumulation, whichaverages around 80 inches(203 cm). Periods of snowfalltypically last from November to

April, with snow urries as lateas May or as early as Septem-ber not unexpected.
