Swimming pools have evolved consider-ably since the time of their earliest pre-decessors, centuries ago, and in just the

past few years as well, due to advancements in design and technology. Jersey Pools & Spas, a fi xture in the greater Long Beach Island area, satisfi es its customers with such cutting-edge capabilities in combination with quality prod-ucts and superior workmanship.

Medford-based Jer-sey Pools & Spas has served New Jersey for more than two decades, particularly in the state’s southern sections. On LBI, they are partnered with Bay Avenue Plant Co., based in Surf City, helping to enhance what the company can offer and actualize in a customer’s back yard.

Jersey Pools & Spas works closely with its clients, whether to install a new pool, spa, deck or outdoor kitchen, or to perform renovations and service for an existing structure. “We’re a from-concept-to-implementation company,” right down to the types of plantings a home-owner might want to plant poolside, said Gary Cop, the company’s vice president and general manager. The company does it all, “from the survey to the swim.”

WATER FEATURE: Design combines with technology for the experience of a heated swim with a view. With automation, owners can use their iPhone to have a spa bubbling when they arrive.

As Cop explained, customers seek effi-ciency, durability, customization, security and safety – such as automatic safety covers. Jersey Pools & Spas, which receives a great deal of its business through word-of-mouth, provides exactly that: child-friendly custom gunite pools; infi nity edge pools; pools with built-in bars; pools with built-in spas; low-maintenance fiberglass pools; pools with f iber-optic or

LED lighting, specifi c color schemes and ad-vanced controls; and surrounded by elegant landscaping.

“We’re doing every-thing from pools elevated off the ground one story to Frank Lloyd Wright-esque designs on the bay,” with the former, an oceanfront home, maintaining “the view of the ocean while the homeowners swim,” said Cop.

“Backyard extreme makeovers have been our claim to fame,” he added.

Recently, automation via iPhone and iPad has become more prevalent and in demand in relation to home pools, and Jersey Pools & Spas can offer homeowners this technological luxury. For clients leaving their primary resi-dence in, say, North Jersey and heading down to their home on LBI, “you get on your iPhone

and completely control your pool,” Cop remarked. “If you want your spa hot and bubbling when you get there, it will be.”

Owner Steven Heick-len started Jersey Pools & Spas with one vehicle and one employee, states the company web site, jersey-poolsandspas.com. “He focused on service and by 2011 had built the company into a multi-segmented, full service organization. Jersey Pools & Spas Inc. now of-fers services ranging from construction of new pools to full service and repair, renovations, an 8,000 sq. ft. retail store and weekly maintenance.

“Because of Steve’s keen eye for detail, Jersey Pools & Spas has been the recipient of numerous awards, citations, certifi cates of excellence and certifi cations,” from, among others, the N.J. Concrete and Aggregate As-sociation, the National Swimming Pool Foun-dation, the Pool and Spa Professional Dealer Network and the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals.

The company’s mission – “to be the premier swimming pool and spa company with a con-stant vision to the future” – is carried out via “state-of-the-art ecological pool construction and renovation, … exemplary pool service and maintenance coupled with a professional retail operation,” as well as a comprehensive selection of services.

On LBI, the company works with many

different architectural fi rms and builders, and understands the various regulations – setbacks, dune issues and other land-use rules and restric-tions – in each municipality, to properly set expectations for customers.

Jersey Pools & Spas’ signifi cant amount of referral work, meanwhile, stems from the company’s experience and professionalism, and “the wow factor” it always aims to provide. In addition to pleasing their customers, Cop pointed out, “I want people to walk into a back yard and say, ‘Wow, who did this?!’”

September hours for Jersey Pools & Spas are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The hours change for the re-mainder of the fall and winter, and in spring and summer.

For many, tree climbing is a rite of child-hood. For Rory MacInnis, it’s not only his passion, it’s also his business.

“I’m not as spry as I used to be,” said Pine Barrens Tree founder Rory MacInnis with a smirk, but at 28 years old, the professional arbor-ist, licensed tree expert and competitive climber has already scaled thousands of trees in his life-time, and he doesn’t plan to quit anytime soon.

“Eight years of climbing, six days a week, and still loving it!” he said.

MacInnis got his start and experience work-ing for Aspen Tree Expert Co. in Jackson, under the tutelage of three-time world tree-climbing champion Mark Chisholm. Then he started his own company four years ago.

As an arborist, his focus is on pruning and preservation. He does his best to educate prop-erty owners about tree care and the benefi ts of maintaining healthy trees whenever possible. “I always try to steer people more toward the care side of it,” he said, much preferring to leave a healthy tree standing than take it down. An oak gall, for example (branch tissue that grows over a wasp egg mass), is not necessarily a death

sentence for a tree. More often a tree dies as a result of a combination of factors that cause a slow decline. A tree that has a gall would need to be stressed out by something else, which might then lower its resistance and cause it to become overwhelmed and die.

“You never like to have to take one down,” said MacInnis’ ground man, Chris Biunno, although they both accept healthy tree removal as one of the realities of the job.

MacInnis’ love for tree work really began as a fascination with ropes, he explained. As a 13-year-old kid, he said, his friends got “normal” kid stuff and he got ropes. As a young man, when he started thinking about how he might turn his passion into a profession, he realized he had two choices: move away and become a mountain guide, or stay in New Jersey and learn to climb trees.

MacInnis earned the title of 2012 ISA New Jersey State Tree Climbing Champion earlier this year at the competition held at Rutgers University, where he competed with 31 other climbers in fi ve events: work climb, throw line, speed climb, footlock and aerial rescue. The top

climbers from the preliminary round (MacInnis placed second) participate in the Master’s Challenge, which puts them in a massive tree and calls upon them to use the combined skills in the aforementioned events.

“The competition was, as always, a great time and great opportunity to catch up with other tree guys in the state,” MacInnis said. One of the highlights was having the chance to compete in the Master’s Challenge, a feature added to the New Jersey event only in the last two years, with his former boss and tree climbing mentor, Mark Chisholm, a 19-year consecu-tive state champion and three-time world champion.

As state titleholder, MacInnis then participated in the international competition in Laurelhurst Park in Portland, Ore., Aug. 9 to 15.

“I was in Oregon for fi ve days. … The park had 160-foot fi r trees and large spreading oaks. Bern’d Strasser from Germany won the competition. He is a veteran of the Internationals, and it was his ninth world title.

“I did well in the two speed events, footlock rope climb and belayed speed climb, placing in the middle of the pack. The two judged events, work climb and aerial rescue, brought my overall score to the back of the pack, placing 39th out of 42 male com-petitors. I learned many new tricks

to bring to everyday work and competition and hope to be back at the worlds in the future.”

For MacInnis, the experience of the competi-tion is equal parts exhilaration and camaraderie.

“When climbing the rope into a big tree, I start to get real excited thinking about the challenge of climbing around in it and getting out on the ends of the limbs,” he said. “Once I get up high and tied into the tree, I feel very focused. Being up high brings together years of experience to make the climb smooth and energy effi cient.

“My favorite aspect of competing is not even competing; it’s seeing all the other hardworking arborists from all over the state.”

Physical Strength,Proper Equipment Essential

Tree care work is intensely physical; wres-tling tree limbs all day requires a lot of arm and upper-body strength, attested Biunno. But the right equipment can alleviate some of the load (for bigger limbs, pulleys can be rigged to distribute the weight), and proper gear and training help keep the guys safe and protected from injury. Hot days are the hardest. As a dis-tance and obstacle runner, MacInnnis keeps his endurance up, but he relishes the chillier days, when he’s unlikely to break a sweat.

Competitive tree climbing – “a niche hobby,”

Pine Barrens TreeContinued from Page 8

MacInnis called it – is different from timber sports because it specializes in fast rope climb-ing. It’s really about how fast you can move around, up in big oak trees, 100 feet tall or more.

Of course, working in the treetops has its occupational hazards; MacInnis once fractured a vertebra in a fall from 25 feet up. If there was something positive to come out of it, though, the faulty sender that caused him to fall was taken off the market.

A typical harness is designed to allow him to “sit” while suspended; for simplicity’s sake, MacInnis said he likes to keep his harness rela-tively unencumbered by tools, so he keeps just the essentials at hand, chiefl y a chainsaw. Next he climbs into his climbing spikes, which attach to his lower legs and hook under his heels, to grip the trunk. Spikes should be used only for removal, he pointed out, since they actually damage the tree and leave unsightly spike marks in the bark every time the climber digs in to get a foothold.

He and Biunno share the professional values of speed and effi ciency.

But perhaps the most valuable piece of equipment in the whole operation is the ropes – more specifi cally, the knots in those ropes; a climber’s life could depend on them.

Every time MacInnis ascends a tree, he noted, he has to have complete confi dence in his knots.

“I wouldn’t be able to go up and work in the Continued on Page 14

Pine Barrens TreeContinued from Page 10tree if I thought anything was going to fail,” he said. “If you’re scared, you can’t get anything done,” especially in the bigger, badder Mon-mouth County trees, some measuring 110 to 120 feet tall.

On his climbing line he ties a friction hitch, which has a quick-release function that stays secure while he gathers slack to ascend and then allows the line to slide smoothly for the descent.

A word to the wise property owner: Anyone who cares about trees should trust only a well-qualifi ed tree company; the workers should be certifi ed arborists and licensed tree experts. “You want to see guys showing up wearing hard hats and eye protection,” MacInnis said.

Those designations indicate the crew’s edu-cation, experience and dedication to the craft. Pine Barrens Tree is the only company he knows of with those qualifi cations within a radius of a 20- or 30-minute drive (the next nearest being in Jackson). MacInnis, for example, took classes through Rutgers University to become certifi ed.

Every job is at least a two-man operation, which is why it’s vitally important to have a good ground man, MacInnis said. And some jobs are more strategic than others. Often the diffi culty level is determined by the proximity of structures, objects and other trees.

In the tree, the climber must size up the branches and consider the angles, predict the direction they’ll fall so they don’t hit the house or a shed or come back at the climber. “You don’t really want any wild swinging,” MacInnis called down.

Biunno said he likes the climbing, but he has more learning to do. He started in tree work “from the ground up” and said the variety from day to day keeps it interesting. “I hate roller coasters, but I can do this,” he said.

Like snowfl akes, no two trees are exactly the same. In that sense, the trees have a lot to teach them. “You learn something new every day,” Biunno said.

As the ground man, securing the rigging rope and assisting and receiving the limbs MacInnis lowers, Biunno is no stranger to getting poked by branches

and assaulted by twigs. As such he cannot over-state the importance of safety gear, especially eye protection. “The one time you don’t wear protection is the time you’ll get hurt,” he said.

Different body types have their advantages in tree work – smaller, nimbler guys can get into higher, tighter spots (especially useful for prun-ing), but bulkier, burly guys can muscle chunks of trunk and handle weightier limbs.

Contrary to popular belief, the best way to dismantle a tree is to start with the bottom-most limbs and work up, MacInnis and Biunno explained. It’s a process of continually clearing the way underneath, so limbs don’t get hung up as they are lowered. Finally, at the top, with little to no interference, the worker has ample room to maneuver. Once all the limbs are off, the arborist starts sawing off manageable-sized chunks of trunk until the tree is at a safe height to drop it altogether. As in any job, it’s all a matter of experience, MacInnis said.

The perspective from up there is thrilling, he admitted. He has sent many of his personal friends up in the harness to get a feel for the ex-perience, and they never forget it, he said. —V.L.

Jack Reynolds

The ground man of the team secures the rigging rope and receives the limbs that the climber lowers, explained Chris Buinno.

There are plenty of fi sh in the sea – or ponds, rather – as one peruses

the plethora of water gardens at The Water Garden and Koi Co. on Route 9 in Bayville. The company wants patrons to fully understand the value of koi; it offers tours through its two-acre retail business that might start off with a little fi sh feeding of the 60-some koi of varying types in the company’s 14,000-gallon breeding tank.

“If you put your hand with some food in it underneath the water, they’ll actually come up into your hand to eat the food,” said owner Rich Norcross. Customers “get a handful of food and the fi sh pluck the water out of their hand – it’s a pretty amazing thing. The kids go crazy for it. Actually, some of the parents are a little more obsessed with it than the kids are.”

Not that The Water Garden and Koi Co. needs to fi sh for compliments, as the members of the family-owned business have more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of the landscaping business. The company is a reliable source for all things water garden, and its staff includes experts on everything from pond maintenance to fi sh health.

“Anybody can call us even if we didn’t install your pond,” Norcross said. “We take calls from people that fi nd us on the Internet and know they need an answer.”

Koi, which have a slightly more aggressive personality than goldfi sh, practically jump out of the water for the food in a visitor’s hand. Koi also can come in any variation of colors and grow up to 28 to 30 inches long, whereas the biggest goldfi sh will max out at 10 to 12 inches and be limited to orange, orange and white, or blue, white, black, and red combinations.

The Water Garden and Koi Co. breeds domestic koi, as well as a few imported Japanese and Israeli fi sh. “They’re our pets

on display. When they breed, we capture the babies and we treat them and we put them out for sale. We also bring fi sh in from suppliers and wholesalers.”

As patrons stroll through the lush grounds, they witness multitudes of aesthetically pleas-ing ponds, small water gardens, blue water gardens, bog gardens, streams, fountains, larger koi ponds with heavy-duty fi ltration, and the in-creasingly popular pond-less waterfalls, which

Page 21: HomeFront Fall 2012

HOMEFRONT 21 FALL 2012

operate with no body of water at their base. “In the front yard it’s a great idea, or on a

commercial property, because you can get the effect of the waterfall, but the water looks like it’s going through gravel or just a stone bed. But in actuality there is a chamber underneath the stone.”

The handcrafted displays range from simple designs to the most elaborate of pond and aquatic landscaping arrangements.

“It depends on the size of your yard,” Nor-cross said. “You want to get something that’s size-appropriate in proportion to everything else in the yard. I’ve done water gardens as small as 50 gallons and as large as 14,000 gallons. You can go anywhere in between. As far as maintenance, it’s really about the type of fi ltration used, and you always want to go oversized. Some people buy a fi lter and pump that would just fi t requirements of the pond, but the fi sh will continue to grow, so they tend to outgrow the fi ltration system.”

For the do-it-yourselfers, the company is always ready to visit your yard and give a free evaluation and estimate.

Ryan Morrill

The company gives tours of its two-acre complex in Bayville so the public can become acquainted with the joy of koi.

“We go out and take a look at the site, and I usually quickly scan the yard and imagine what I would do. Then the customer tells me what they’re interested in do-ing, and we feed off each other as far as what their expectations are and what I can do for them. I do like to blend everything into the existing landscape so it doesn’t look like we just put a pond in. I like everything to look as if you laid out the entire yard at the same time, that everything is cohesive, from the colors of the stone to the size of the waterfall. Everything should blend with what is already there.”

As the web site watergarde-nandkoi.com suggests, one can “visit our location and dream of the endless possibilities. We can help you turn your aquatic landscaping dreams into reality!”

From the “underground” up, the price of for the installation of a complete pond package could average anywhere be-tween $2,500 and $3,500 Nor-cross explained. “Or you can go much, much bigger or you can go smaller.”

The Water Garden and Koi Co. opened in March 1997 at a rental property on Route 9 in Bayville before needing to expand just three years later due to demand. The retail business still sits on Route 9, on a property between Bay and Butler avenues, and focuses increasingly on the spe-cialty of aquatic gardening and landscaping.

“It’s truly a specialty,” said Norcross. “You really have to know what you’re doing when someone calls with a fi sh health problem or an issue with a leak. You’ve got to know how to fi x it. You’ve got to know how to medicate the fi sh or fi nd the leak and repair it.”

The Water Garden and Koi Co. has com-pleted jobs as far north as Staten Island, as far west as Cherry Hill and as far south as Wildwood. “We’re pretty much all over New Jersey, anywhere that can be driven to within a few hours.”

In other words, the company itself has become a big fi sh in a small pond.

“There are a lot of pond centers that sell pond products. They also sell grass seed and pools and fl owers. We only sell anything to do with water gardens. If you have a question about fi sh, you want to talk to someone that exclusively deals with that.”

Anyone interested in a tour is asked to make an appointment. The company can be reached at 732-269-1188. Waterandkoi.com also offers sales, seasonal specials, new product arrivals and an e-mail list to join. —M.M.

On the side of Outdoor Showers’ company truck, you can read the saying “No More Sandy Bathrooms.” Owner Todd

Leatherman said that is one of the numerous fringe benefi ts customers receive if they call on Outdoor Showers, located at 1316 East Bay Ave. in Manahawkin. Leatherman started the business fi ve years ago and moved it to its cur-rent building last fall.

“A lot of people around here are builders,” he said. “I wanted to specialize in something a little more unique. This is the right area to do it.”

With a grandmother who had a summer house in Beach Haven, Leatherman remembers many a time cleaning off in an outside shower after a day at the beach.

“They’re a necessity when you live near the beach because otherwise, you’ll just keep clog-ging up your shower and bathtub drains with sand,” he said. “But now you don’t have to have guests traipse through your house soaking wet or trailing sand from the beach.”

However, he said the showers he recalled using are a far cry from the modern structure his company produces.

“Back then, the usual outdoor shower was

this wooden, rickety thing that had a little latch,” he said. “It didn’t really give you any privacy. And you had to maintain them often, as they’d get weather-beaten during the winter. You’d have to repaint them or fi x the door lock. But what we have to offer is maintenance-free.”

Leatherman said the showers feature modu-lar construction with powder-coated (marine grade), stainless steel hardware, vinyl wall panels and removable fl oors made from main-tenance-free decking. All parts are included, and custom colors are available.

Pointing to one of his model structures outside at the shop, he said, “If you look at the outside of this, nobody can peek through. It is completely solid. Those old wooden ones often had openings between the wood panels, and a lot of times that wood could easily break. Ob-viously, privacy is something that is extremely important for a person using an outdoor shower.”

Leatherman, who has 15 years’ experience in the construction business, said he has built outdoor showers for little bungalows to multi-million-dollar beachfront homes.

“I’ve had some homes where we built Continued on Page 44

FALL 2012 28 HOMEFRONT

Fall is quickly approaching, and outdoor fun is becoming indoor entertainment. It’s time to trade in those beach towels

for snugly blankets; time to shut off the air conditioning and let the cool, island breezes waft inside the house through open windows.

But the summer guests are gone, and the house could use some freshening up. The fl ower-adorned bedspread just doesn’t seem to fi t in anymore. The brightly colored bathroom linens now seem too bold. The draperies in the living room have faded, and the paint in the guestroom is chipping. Where does one even begin?

Renovating or sprucing up the house may seem to be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Seeking the help of an interior design specialist can be as easy as it is exciting.

Between the Sheets LLC, located at 10th

Street and Central Avenue in Ship Bottom, has been offering professional home design as-sistance for nearly 20 years. The store provides everything from luxury linens and window treatments to fl ooring and case goods such as dressers and armoires. One of the business’ bedding displays was even featured as “Bed of the Month” on the web site of national purveyor Bella Notte Linens, in August.

Co-owners Maryann Schmid and Kristin Nissen opened the shop on Long Beach Island after rooming together at the Philadelphia Col-lege of Textiles and Science, now Philadelphia University. They later landed the same job,

Outfi t a Luxury Bedroom or Coordinate a Custom Home

working for a local furniture and design store.“We just love textiles,” Schmid said. “When

Kristin and I worked together (at the furniture store), we would do all these beautiful things for people. Then it would come to the bedding, and the store would have these dreadful bedspreads made out of polyester. It was horrible, and the clients were left on their own for sheeting. People would have these beautiful rooms and then be stuck going through a department store or catalog to fi nd good, quality linens to fi nish the job. So that’s how we started,” she explained.

Many of the bed sheets offered at Between the Sheets are specially fi tted with deep pockets, perfect for over-sized mattresses. Some of the suppliers even offer customizations.

Important factors to consider when choos-ing a bed linen include the quality and type of cotton, the weave and ply of the threads and the method of fi nish. While thread count, defi ned as the number of threads horizontally and verti-cally woven together to make a square inch of fabric, is an important aspect, Schmid said it shouldn’t be the consumer’s only guide when choosing linens.

“You could buy a 600-thread count sheet made of long staple cotton that isn’t fi nished smoothly and end up with pills and a scratchy sheet, whereas if you purchased a 200-thread count fi ne Egyptian cotton sheet fi nished to perfection, it will far out last the 600-thread

Jack ReynoldsSTYLE: Interweaving patterns, colors and textures creates interest. Between the Sheets owners Maryann Schmid and Krisin Nissen invite customers to come in and investigate the options.

POST-SEASON: The place for awnings after the summer is serviced and stored away.

Your awnings have protected your house and windows from the summer sun; now it’s time to protect them from winter’s

harsh elements. Giglio Awning, located at 7802 Long Beach Blvd. in Harvey Cedars, is a full-ser-vice business, and fall is one of the busiest times of year for awning-care, said owner Dave Voris.

“Once we are fi nished for the season, it’s time to wash the awnings, take them down and store them to protect them from the ele-ments,” he said.

Having the awnings serviced means they will last for 10 or more vacation years ahead. Washing the awnings is the fi rst step in service. Not only are they saturated fi rst with pollen in the spring, then salt from our refreshing, briny air, but sea gulls, other birds and bugs may have bombarded them as well. Leaving residues in the cloth is just not good for it.

Giglio’s team of cleaners uses a mild deter-gent and soft brushes to loosen and wash away these stains. Next, they service the metal parts of the awnings so they will be ready in the spring. Then, if the customer has indicated, they put a protective boot (customized cover) on the awnings to leave them in place, or remove the awnings for storage.

To make things easier for computer-savvy customers, Voris has instituted an electronic service contract this year that allows customers to set up their service time via the company’s web site, giglioawning.com. “Schedule service

with a click of the button,” he said. “We have over 2,000 customers we service

in a given year, and we give our customers as many options as we can. Some will want the awnings washed and then ‘booted’ on the house. Others will have washed them themselves and will have us take them down and store them in their garage, while others have us take them and store in our facility until the spring, when we reinstall them.

“The web site allows them to choose the service they want and when they want us to service them, and we will comply as long as Mother Nature is cooperating with us that day,” said Voris.

The web site also has videos showing the different kinds of service.

“They can view it online and do it all electronically,” said Voris, but he added, “That doesn’t mean that we won’t take phone calls, especially from some of our older clients.” Call 609-494-3004 or e-mail giglioawning @comcast.net.

Giglio Awning has been serving customers on LBI and surrounding communities since 1976.

“My mantra is to give a lifetime of service and value to my customers,” said Voris. “Like us on facebook to receive discounts and special promotional offers,” he added. “We also do a weekly trivia question every Friday at 5 p.m. for a $50 gift certifi cate.” —P.J.

The Stoneman has been on the job for 33 years, and by now some of the satisfi ed customers are third-generation clients.

When the sign on a property says, “The Stone-man Was Here,” it means the job was done well, effi ciently, and with good customer relations.

Between the good word of referrals and how assured that inquirers are after they talk to The Stoneman on the phone, he gets about 95 percent of the jobs from people who call.

The Stoneman is Mike “Stony” LoCa-sale, and his business is delivery and spread of aggregate material to customers on Long Beach Island and in surrounding areas.

“Along with delivery of stone, we also spread the stone and install pavers. We do landscaping, grading, all aspects of maintaining a person’s property,” he specifi ed.

Most of the orders are for standard washed stone that fills the homeowner’s need for a ground cover that is both practical and cosmetic. At the shore, stone is in demand, and The Stone-man gets the average job down and evenly spread in about three to four hours. Paver work takes a little longer, of course.

Equipment is well maintained. A 12-ton truck handles bigger jobs, and next down is a 6-ton vehicle, then two pickups, along with

various-sized pieces of equipment for spreading the stone, and attachments.

In a normal day, they lay between 40 and 60 tons of stone, the guys on the job counted.

“One reason we’re so successful is the great employees that we’ve got and the hard work they do, the dedication they have,” LoCasale said as the crew gathered at the West Creek headquar-

ters to start another day. “It’s a lot of time and

a lot of energy, but in the end it’s all worthwhile,” The Stoneman said as he took stock of his efforts. “Very few complaints, a lot of satisfi ed custom-ers, and enough at the end of the week for a

good bottle of wine!”Asked what his formula is for customer

service, he said, “One, being on time; two, reputation; and three, the customer-contractor relationship.”

Being on time can be “one of the most dif-fi cult parts of the business” for a contractor, he added. “You can’t have breakdowns; you can’t have fl at tires. My men show up all the time, (and) they’re always on time.”

At the end of the day, LoCasale still has two or three hours’ worth of work, and that’s gener-ally when he returns phone calls from prospec-tive customers. As a business, The Stoneman

Talk about unintended consequences! Great progress has been made in the past few decades cleaning up Ameri-

ca’s waterways. But the removal of pollution from the water has created better conditions for shipworms, a.k.a. “termites of the sea” or “Toredo worms.” They actually aren’t worms at all but a type of saltwater clam, sans shells, that loves to bore into submersed wood such as piers, docks and ship hulls, eventually destroying the wood.

“Years ago,” said Capt. Bob Brazill, the proprietor of LBI’s Capt. Brazill’s Full Ser-vice Marine, “sailors used to sail up into the New York harbor just to have the toxins kill the marine life on their hulls. But now there aren’t enough toxins to do that.”

That’s bad news for owners not only of wooden-hulled vessels, but of docks and piers as well. Replacing a dock or pier is a costly and time-consuming process.

There is, Brazill said, an alternative. Capt. Bob has hooked up with a Florida-based com-pany, Formapile Industries Inc., to provide Southern Ocean County’s pier owners a way

Formapile System Allows Repair Of Piling Instead of Replacement

Alternative Uses a Form Filled With Protective Resin

to extend the lives of their worm-eaten pilings at less than half the price and less aggravation of installing new pilings, say proponents.

The Formapile system is simplicity it-self. A fiberglass mat is wrapped around a damaged piling. The mat is pre-impregnated with a water-activated resin. When that resin is exposed to water, it hardens, forming an impact-resistant and energy-absorbing rock shield, thus strengthening and protecting the piling.

“The resin reacts with salt water and fills in all of the holes the worms bored,” said Brazill.

So the resin, which hardens into a con-crete-like substance, not only protects the outside of the piling from further invasion by shipworms, but effectively patches the damage they have already created, making the piling as good as – some would say bet-ter than – new.

Not only does employing the Formapile solution result in considerable savings, but it saves considerable aggravation as well.

Don’t let fall or potentially frosty tempera-tures stop you from enjoying garden-fresh produce. Extend the nutritional

value and homegrown fl avor into your fall and early-winter meals with the help of short-season crops and season-extending strategies.

Lettuce, spinach, radishes, turnips and beets are quick to mature from seed to harvest. Plus, the cooler temperatures enhance their fl avor. Simply count the number of frost-free days left in your growing season and compare it with the number of days from planting to harvest listed on the seed packet.

Protect these late plantings and other vegetables from chilly fall temperatures with cloches, cold frames and fl oating row covers. Many of these devices have long been used by garden-ers to jump start the season in spring and extend it much later into fall. These devices trap heat around the plants, protecting them from frosty temperatures.

Convert gallon milk jugs into garden cloches for individual plants. Remove the bottom of the jug and slide it over the plant. Use the cap to capture heat or remove to ventilate your homemade cloche on sunny days. Or purchase reusable cloches with built-in venti-lation. Originally made of glass, many of the newer cloches are plastic, making them more affordable, easy to stack and portable.

You can make your own cold frames. Many gar-deners convert discarded windows, a bit of lumber and nails into a homemade shelter for their plants. The window size usually deter-mines the size of your cold frame. Just make sure you can reach all the plants in-side. For best results, your frame should be higher in the back than the front so water and melting snow can drain off, and if pos-sible, facing south for better warming. The Internet and garden books are f illed

with plans.I prefer the construction-free, all-purpose

garden fabrics. Simply drape these fl oating row covers (season-extending fabrics) over your crops. Anchor the edges with rocks, boards, or wire wickets. The fabric traps heat around your plants, but allows air, light and water through so there is no need to uncover the plants during the day or for watering.

Increase the ease of season-extending fab-rics with low and tall frost pop-up covers and plant protection frost covers from Gardener’s Supply. The frames are fi tted with all-purpose garden fabric to create protective tents. You can protect new plantings and extend your harvest by protecting plants down to 24 degrees Fahrenheit.

So with a little preparation you can keep enjoying fresh-from-the-garden fl avor long past the traditional end to your harvest season.

There’s a lot of talk fl oating around about the economy, thanks to November’s elec-tions. But unlike the politicians, Karl

Perez of Waretown’s Cottage Fence is actually doing something about it.

“All of my materials are American-made products,” he said. “I like creating the work here, not overseas.”

In fact, Perez’s company, now fi ve years old (he’s worked in the fencing business, though, for 2½ decades), is what used to be typical of Ameri-can small businesses. It’s family-owned and family-operated. It’s licensed and insured. It promises “quality and dependable work.”

Some things have changed since Perez erected his fi rst fence 25 years ago.

“Vinyl is what most people want now,” he said. “It is durable, maintenance-free.”

Aluminum fencing is also popular, today’s equivalent of the old wrought iron. Some tra-ditionalists still insist on wood. Finally, there’s chain link. Cottage Fence can do them all and then some – Perez also constructs outside shower enclosures and trash bins that are so popular in Southern Ocean County and especially on Long Beach Island.

Why do most people want a fence? Either to keep people and things out, especially in the

case of swimming pools, Perez said, or to keep people or things in, as in small children and pets. So if you’ve just had a pool installed or have a new puppy, you might want a fence pronto. No problem with Cottage Fencing.

“Give me a call (at 609-489-6400) and we’ll come down and make an inspection and give you a free estimate,” said Perez. “The lead time for actually putting it up is about two to three weeks.”

He handles all of the permits, a process that is typically, he said, rather cut and dried on LBI except in Beach Haven, where there are some setback issues. Perez, though, has had plenty of experience dealing with the code offi cials in the Queen City.

Here’s what an online reviewer said of Cottage Fence: “Karl is a true professional!!! I had an entire vinyl fence with two gates installed. Karl returns your calls. He is honest and completes the job in the estimated time frame. The fence project was beautiful. I liked his work ethic and project so much I then had a vinyl outside shower installed. Even though the weather was over 100 degrees Karl showed up to work on his job. I highly recommend Cottage Fencing.”

Now there’s an All-American review! —R.M.

count (sheet),” she emphasized. But Between the Sheets isn’t just about lin-

ens, of course. Schmid and Nissen are at your service, no matter what your needs may be, whether you’re looking to revamp your bedroom or coordinate your entire home.

According to Schmid, beginning to make changes inside the house can be as simple as interchanging patterns and colors, as well as tex-tures. Mixing in different throw pillows, shams, sheets or duvet covers is a great way to make a big change for a lesser cost, as the items can be reused, depending upon the season. Artwork and decor, paint, draperies and towels can all be incorporated, as well.

If you’re totally unsure of where to begin

when considering the upkeep of the inside of your year-round or summer home, stopping in and taking a walk around Between the Sheets, LLC is a great way to gain a better sense of what it is you may be looking for. Schmid suggests coming in to feel the different textures, look at the variation of colors and consider different combinations of both.

When possible, Schmid and Nissen make sure to carry products from quality retailers that make their products in America. Bella Notte Linens are dyed and fabricated in California. Redford House furniture, including the bed on which the Bella Notte Linens are displayed, is also made in California. Brahms Mount textiles are woven in Maine.

evolved, you might say, after LoCasale worked for a friend in the business and found out he liked it. Originally from the suburbs of Phila-delphia, his family spent summers at the shore.

“During the summertime growing up, I did everything from clamming, working at the A&P, and a friend of mine was doing this. I started working for him as a laborer. I was at Drexel University and they had a co-op, six months in and six months out, so I went out for six months and started The Stoneman business and stayed in it.

“So, I’m not sure what I’m going to do when I grow up, but I think I’m going to die The Stone-man!” he concluded with a grin.

separate he and she showers because they were people who would get a lot of company during the summer, and they all loved going to the beach,” he said.

Leatherman said now that the fall season is here, homeowners can begin making plans for their outdoor shower so that it will be all set for use when beach weather returns.

“We’ve made deliveries during snowstorms,” he said. “But some people have wanted them done during the spring and even during the summer.”

Leatherman said his clients range from the Delmarva area to New England. The company ships to anywhere in the United States. He said fans of the “Home to the Rescue” television show once saw him in action.

“We tore down two old outdoor showers and replaced them with new ones,” said Leatherman.

“When I was in Florida (meeting with For-mapile representatives), they took me to a job site,” said Brazill. “The homeowner said, ‘I’ve been through this (replacing pilings) before. They had to bring in a barge, new pilings, a pile driver; it took three days and there was all that noise. With this (Formapile) there was no noise, and the job was done in a day.’”

A Formapile installation is manufacturer guaranteed for 10 years and has a life expec-tancy of 15 to 20 years.

Brazill is excited about his new business sideline.

“I think this will do a lot for a lot of people,” he said.

It was pure serendipity that Brazill was introduced to the opportunity.

“I picked up on it in January,” he said. “This guy called me and wanted me to sur-vey a boat for him. I’m talking to him on the phone, and he starts telling me about what he’s doing with Formapile. He sent me some literature about it, and I said, ‘This is it!’”
