The Gift of Life

1 My parents have certainly had their troubles. They loved each other, but they didn’t

seem to like each other very much. Dad was too fond of his beer, and he talked down to

Mom a lot. When she tried to stand up to him, a fight would inevitably follow.

2 The year 1998 was the beginning of a remarkable transformation for my family. My

father, 52 years old, the always healthy, weightlifting, never-missed-a-day-of-work kind of

dad, discovered he had kidney disease. One physician’s assistant told Dad, “According to

your file, you’re supposed to be dead. ”Dad’s future hung in limbo.

3 The road to recovery has been long. During it all, my mother stood by, sympathetic

and helpful. In November 2003, my father received a healthy kidney at Christ Hospital. My

mom was his donor.

4 Financially, the disease was devastating to them. Dad was too sick to work and

throughout the same period, Mom was downsized from two different jobs. So they had no

income for months. So my sister and I were surprised when, shortly before his surgery day,

Dad handed us a diamond pendant that we were to give to Mom after the operation.

5 The surgeries went well, and not long afterward, Mom was allowed to visit Dad. It

was surreal to see both our parents trying to talk to each other through tears. We presented t

he diamond pendant to Mom so that Dad could watch her open it. Everybody was crying,

even the nurses.

6 My Dad was having a hard time fighting back emotion, and suddenly my parents sp

ontaneously reached out to hold each other ’s hands. I snapped a picture of the enormous,

life-defining moment.

7 Everything has changed since then. They laugh more and complain less. There’s a

closeness that they didn ’t have before.

8 For Christmas, my sister and I gave them two framed photos linked together by

hooks. The top photo is of their clasped hands on their wedding day. Handwritten on the

matting it says, “For better or worse, for richer or poorer.” The second photo is of that day

in the recovery room. Their hands are intertwined with hospital bands, and on the matting it

says, “In sickness and in health, ’till death do us part. ”

Home Is not a Place for Argument

This is a letter from a father to his daughter, when she got married abroad.

1 Mom and I were really pleased when we heard the information about

your marriage! We hope our child could step on the way of marriage and life,

could be full of thankfulness in the heart, safe and peaceful staying up. Here we

are

giving you a summary of our life.

2 Firstly we’re telling you,“Home is not a place for argument ”. These

words seem meaningless, but exactly correct. This is truth, reality, a conclusion

summarized in thousands of messes and confusions by many couples, so many

families (including ours) with so much time, so much bitter, so much quarrel, so

much love and hate and so much right and wrong!

Page 57: HOME Unit 5 True Love Section A Listening and Speaking Section B Text Learning Section C Skill Development.

Text B

3 Secondly “Marriage is an empty box”. You must put something in it, and then you ’re able to get back something you need. The more you put, the more you get. A lot of people expect too much when they get married. They expect they can get richness, consolation, love, peace, happiness and health. As a matter of fact, marriage is only an empty box when it just begins. The two persons gathered must foster a habit, that ’s to give, to love, to serve each other, then the box will be fruitful day by day. 4 The first thing that should be put in the box is “missing”. Missing is something branded in our mind. Missing is a path to home when you ’re exhausted, is warmth in icy winter night, and is the flavor of meals after you rush into the house. In empty box, “art” is also needed. In marriage life, art is everywhere, in anger and in dispute. There was a couple that hardly fostered five children. The hardship can only be realized by themselves. One day, the couple disputed more and more seriously and almost broken. The wife suddenly said, “Wait! I’m goannaprocreat ”. This is the art of dispute.

5 In addition, there are still a lot of things to be put in, and this is up to

yourselves.

6 A writer has ever said “you fostered him, and you taught him, then

your duty has finished. And the best gift you gave to him is a pair of wings”.

We’d

like to see you flying happily, with our blessings!

November 15, 2011Dear Sir, With reference to our order No. W 98, the 120 computer sets supplied to the above order were delivered the day before yesterday, but we regret that 20 sets were badly damaged. The packages containing the computer sets appeared to be in good condition and we accepted and signed for them without question. We unpacked the computer sets with care and can only assume that damage must be due to careless handling atsome stage prior to packing. We shall be glad if you will replace all 20 sets as soon as possible. Meanwhile, we have put the damaged computer sets aside in case you need them to support a claim on your suppliers for compensation.

Yours sincerely,(Signature)

Dear Mr. Chang,

On September 10, our order for 280 women’s cotton sweaters was duly

received, but we regret to say that 40 cotton sweaters in white color were seriously

soiled.

We had investigated the case immediately, and the result shows that the damage

was due to improper packing, for which the suppliers are definitely responsible.

Needless to say, we have suffered a great loss from this, as we cannot sell the

sweaters in this condition to our customers. We ask you to conduct investigation at

your end and reply to us.
