Dear agents,

As part of your training, you will form a crime-busting team to crack Case #1: The Lab Invasion.

Before you can begin identifying perpetrators, I shall first test your knowledge about using clues.

The case you need to study is inside a box the combination lock of which you must first solve.

Decode the 3-digit number combination to open and read the case.

Get into the action.

Now.

Located in the Bright Minds University,

the Wonders Lab has been the center for research and training of aspiring scientists. Topnotch students are carefully selected to work under the supervision of seasoned professors.

Almost whirling in excitement, Jane arrived at

the lab to observe Prof. Fulbright’s new experiment. In preparation, she devotedly studied her Chemistry and Biology lessons over the week. She learned that Prof. Fulbright is soon retiring and plans to put up a school of his own.

Just as Jane was about to step into the lab, she stood dumbfounded at the sight of people crowding an ambulance nearby. The vehicle sped away leaving the area filled with murmurs. Miss Weepy, the lab caretaker, was sobbing in a corner.

“Anything wrong, ma’am?” Jane

inquired.

“Oh, dear. You don’t want to know what just happened,” Miss Weepy replied, wiping her tears with an old red hanky.

“Why? Where is Prof. Fulbright?”

“Off to the hospital! He is in a state of shock. Oh, how could anyone do this to him!” Miss Weepy wailed, her brown hair in disarray.

“What do you mean? What happened?”

“We found his locker ransacked! His tool box was forced open and his secret powder and liquid diminished. Even the female frog which he was supposed to use in the experiment was missing!”

NEXT

Page 9: Home School Summer Science Workshop 2008 PRESENTS A Detective Mystery Workshop Begin sleuthing!

“What?!!! Who could have done it?” Jane asked,

puzzled at the turn of events.

“I don’t have the faintest idea. About two hours before the incident, I arrived from the grocery and inspected the lab. It was a protocol to check if everything is in order before any scientist could work. No one was inside the time I came in. Minutes later, Prof. Fulbright appeared with Dr. Armstrong. We were all at the lounge area.”

“Dr. Armstrong must have been sad over Prof. Fulbright’s decision to finally quit,” quipped Jane, “He was his former student.”

“Well, I saw them laughing. They were eating pies and drinking coffee. Dr. Armstrong was giving his best wishes to Prof. Fulbright for his retirement soon. When Dr. Arnstrong was gone, I went to the toilet outside. Prof. Fulbright on the other hand went up to prepare for his experiment. On my way back to the lab, I looked up and noticed the glass window kind of smudged. I was sure I wiped it clean before I went to the grocery,” Miss Weepy explained.

NEXT

Page 10: Home School Summer Science Workshop 2008 PRESENTS A Detective Mystery Workshop Begin sleuthing!

“Who else was around that time anyway?” Jane asked.

“Well, I checked the log book. All scientists signed in today. Those who were not scheduled to do experiments were usually just going around the university. I also inspected the confidential folder for the locker key codes. I intended to assign a new code for any new scientist who will replace Prof. Fulbright, but taking it out, I found the cover strangely greasy. Just then, Mr. Glowfire in his usual red lab coat appeared looking for the Professor,” Miss Weepy recounted.

“With Bigleap the brown dog, I suppose,” Jane guessed.

“You bet. That scientist-dog tandem is inseparable.”

“Oh, yes. I heard Mr. Glowfire is taking Prof. Fulbright’s slot in the lab when the old professor retires,” Jane said.

“I am glad he really took Prof. Fulbright’s advice seriously. He had to go through long hours of training as Prof. Fulbright’s assistant. He possibly came to thank the professor. They had a talk for a few minutes,” Miss Weepy said, still sobbing in between.

NEXT

Page 11: Home School Summer Science Workshop 2008 PRESENTS A Detective Mystery Workshop Begin sleuthing!

Miss Weepy continued, “And when

Mr. Glowfire was gone, the third and last scientist to visit the professor was brown-haired Dr. Longlegs. He seemed to have a serious talk with the old professor.”

“Rumors have it they are not in good terms. Perhaps Dr. Longlegs was convincing the professor to finally reveal his powder and liquid experiment?” inquired Jane.

“Who knows? The other scientists are desperately trying to replicate the experiment but they don’t know exactly what kind of powder and liquid the old professor uses. Soon after Dr. Longlegs was gone, Prof. Fulbright excused himself to go out to look for a lemon to use later. I thought of eating some of the cake I bought from the grocery, but I couldn’t find my knife on my desk. Alone, I felt sleepy as I have been very busy due to the continuous work here.”

NEXT

Page 12: Home School Summer Science Workshop 2008 PRESENTS A Detective Mystery Workshop Begin sleuthing!

“Then what happened?” Jane inquired.

“I was about to take a nap when Trixie popped.”

“Trixie, my classmate?”

“Yes. She was in faded red shirt and seemingly angry. She demanded to speak with the professor and handed me a note which she claimed the professor sent.”

“Prof. Fulbright really endears himself to his students,” Jane mused.

“The note says otherwise though. Handwritten in black ink, the note bans her from watching any more of Prof. Fulbright’s experiments. The note accuses her spying on the professor. The girl vanished instantly when I told her the professor couldn’t possibly accommodate her as he was busy in preparation.”

NEXT

Page 13: Home School Summer Science Workshop 2008 PRESENTS A Detective Mystery Workshop Begin sleuthing!

“So I resumed my nap,” Miss Weepy

continued. “I must have slept for about half an hour when Prof. Fulbright came back running, saying he stumbled upon his mixing rod just outside the lab. Feeling suspicious, we rushed upstairs. We were bawled over what we saw. Prof. Fulbright’s locker was mysteriously open. His stuff inside appeared to be raided. I even saw my knife there! Seeing it stained with blood, the professor dropped to the floor,” Miss Weepy said wailing again.

Jane wasted no time. She took out her phone and a voice boomed.

“Hello. This is CSI. May we help you?”
