FLOODING AND FLOOD TYPES

What is a flood?

8

A flood is when water covers land

that is not normally covered.

Flooding is a natural event.

Climate change means that we may see more floods in

the future.

Land and property need to be protected

against flooding.

Flood awareness is needed to know what to do in the event of a flood.

Fluvial (River)

Fluvial flooding is flooding from rivers large and small. This happens when there is a lot of rainfall and

sometimes if rivers are linked to the tides of the sea.

The floods happen when the rivers burst their banks. 9

Coastal

Coastal flooding usually happens during storm surges or very high tides and sometimes tsunamis.

These high sea levels can breach coastal flood defences leading to flooding inland. 10

Pluvial (Rain)

Pluvial flooding happens when there is a lot of rainfall in a short space of time with nowhere for it to go. This is also

known as flash flooding or surface water flooding.

This can lead to floods in urban areas and on roads. 11

Reservoir

Reservoir flooding happens when the reservoir structure fails to keep the water in, either through

cracks or complete destruction.

The land beyond will flood as a large volume of water can escape at once. 12

Groundwater

Groundwater flooding happens when the rocks and earth below the surface fill up with water which rises

above the surface because it is waterlogged.

This happens after long periods of heavy rainfall and can last for a long time. 13

CASE STUDIES

Case Study Investigations

Please investigate the following for your given case study:

Where did it happen? When did it happen? What is happening? What type(s) of flooding happened? Why did it happen?

Use the materials given to you and write up your

findings in your workbook. 16

Flood Protection Activity

We can’t change the weather!

So we have to protect against flooding by having defences of different shapes, sizes and costs.

Use your workbook to find out about different types of flood defences.

Fill in the activity cards in your groups.

Let’s reflect on our learning….

What new information have we learnt?

What new skills have you got?

What did you enjoy the most?

Was anything difficult?

Would you do anything differently next time?

What was the answer to your key question?24
