The Principal’s Points I am writing this on the 1st Day of Spring and I think we could all use a little sunshine! I know that this winter has been difficult and I really appreciate how hard are students are working to keep up with their school work and assignments. Having missed 14 days, it is even more critical that students are in school every day for the remainder of the school year. We have Advanced Placement and Standards of Learning Test beginning in May and I want to be certain that we have used every bit of instructional time that we have to prepare students for these tests. I am certain that you have all heard that I will be retiring at the end of the school year. I have loved being the Principal of Park View High School and have received so much from serving this community. I will talk more about this in the final newsletter of the year but I want each of you to know how much your students have meant to me and that I have grown as an administrator and a person from working at such a great school. The process has started to select my replacement and I will keep you informed as the process moves forward. You may know that we are in the process of converting our main stadium field to a turf field. Through the generous contributions of the Washington Redskins Charitable Trust and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, planning has already started. LCPS is in the process of doing plans and working to obtain the required permits. The actual field replacement will begin next year and will be ready for football in the fall of 2015. For the 2014 school year, the addition of a Black box theatre and main gym bleacher replacement will occur and be ready for the beginning of school in September. Finally, I want for all of parents to know that beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, Park View HS will be participating in E Backpack Grant Program. What this grant provides is that beginning with our rising 9th graders (Class of 2018) students will be provided a 1:1 device for instruction. There teachers will also work from a device and the device will be a tablet. The potential for this to engage students and improve student learning in a way that consistently uses technology is incredible. I am so pleased that PVHS is going to be part of this exciting grant.

As we approach the 4th quarter of school, I am asking parents to please help us by monitoring your student’s academic progress and school attendance. It is also important that you help us in stressing the importance of doing well on standardized test such as the SOL’s. Every students score is important to helping them meet graduation requirements and important to our school as it is a measure of our accreditation. Each test and score is part of the big picture and every student’s success on the test is important to our school success. Our staff has worked very hard this year to provide excellent instruction and support for student learning. I hope that you will ask your students to take the test seriously and not assume that just because they have the verified credit it is not important, because it is important to our school’s accreditation. Over the next few months, I hope you have the opportunity to come out see an athletic or co-curricular event. Our students are working hard and doing amazing things……let’s support their efforts. It has already been a busy spring full of events at the Park View Library. It promises to get even busier. The third quarter of this school year was filled with important events such as the Teen Tech Week, Digital Learning Days, the Battle of the Books
Competition and an Author Visit by young adult author, Matt De la Pena. These events help the Park View High School library
successfully meet the school’s mission of providing “a community to create a rigorous and nurturing learning environment” for our students.
Teen Tech Week
PVHS library continued the Teen Tech Week tradition using this year’s national theme DIY@ Your PVHS Library. “Do It
Yourself” activities took place after school during the week of March 10-14. Our guest presenter for an exciting, newly
rediscovered gadget, the 3D printer, was Mr. Josh Ajima from Dominion High School. His passionate instruction and hands-on
3D activities inspired our students and teachers. Additionally, students constructed and flew balsa wood airplanes. On another
day, they built Bristle Bots: robotic scrub brushes. We would like to extend our appreciation to Mr. Wharton for his circuitry
expertise and help on this successful robotic experiment.
Digital Learning Days
In conjunction with Teen Tech Week, the PVHS library collaborated with the Park View Technology Resource Teacher and
assistants. We planned and facilitated two days of practical software tools and web-based programs for our students and
teachers to explore. Technology such as interactive online programs or various software tools evolve fast, and new ones come
into existence at a rapid pace. We all recognize there is a tremendous need to help students and teachers acquire new
technological skills to succeed and be creative in their academic and professional endeavors. Thus, the Digital Learning Days at
our library media center, on March 12 and 13, provided an exciting avenue for both students and faculty to explore a wide
variety of digital tools. Examples include Photopeach to make photo albums, Greenscreen technology to make videos with
various backgrounds, and practical apps for teachers. As participants travelled among eleven stations set up throughout the
library, they collected “stamps” for their Digital Learning Day passports. Ms. Le and Ms. Rush enjoyed collaborating with Ms.
Walker, Ms. Hummer, Ms. Waino, and Dr. Minshew to make tech adventures on these two days a resounding success. Also, we
would like to give a shout out to our Library League helpers, Tina Chiu, Megan Karman, Vivian Nguyen, Seif Mawla, Ashley
O’Neill, Olivia Constanza and Noah Nicholes for working hard on various projects to support the Digital Learning Days.
Author Visit: Matt De La Peña
Another exciting event that the PVHS librarians facilitate in collaboration with the English Department is an Author Visit by
Matt De La Peña in late April. Mr. De La Peña is a prominent young adult author who wrote books such as Ball Don't Lie,
Mexican White Boy, We Were Here, and I Will Save You. Mr. De La Peña will be in Loudoun County to make a presentation to
the winners of the Loudoun County Public Libraries’ “It’s All Write” contest. Due to the continued generosity of the Loudoun
County Public Libraries, this reknown author will visit PVHS to speak with students and discuss his writing process. We look
forward to his visit.
Battle of the Books
PVHS hosted this year’s Eastern District Battle of the Books competition, one of the many activities that the librarians
passionately support in collaboration with the Park View Reading Specialists, Dr. Karen Banks and Ms. Gray. The county-wide
Battle of the Books is a Jeopardy-type competition where participants pit their knowledge of details in ten selected books
against teams from other LCPS high schools. This annual event has been instrumental in promoting literacy and facilitating
reading skills to help our students become successful life-long readers and twenty-first century learners. PVHS Battle of the
Books warriors were diligent as they came together to practice before school, during lunch, and after school at our library. Our
Battle of the Books team competed against Broad Run, Dominion, and Potomac Falls high schools. After the competition, a
banquet, in the theme from one of this year’s Battle Books called Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride, was hosted
in the library for the participants. During lunch teams from different schools relaxed and relived exciting moments of the battle.
Dominion High School and Potomac Falls High School won the Eastern District Competition and will participate in the Final
Contest at Briar Woods. We wish them well.
Due Books
It seems way too early to be thinking about overdue books, but the end of the school year will be here before we know it. So,
this is just a friendly reminder that all library materials are due on Friday, May 30, 2014. Any lost or damaged item must
be paid for before a student’s record is clear, as required by the LCPS policy. In short, students who have overdue books at
the end of the school year will receive deficiency notices and will not receive their report cards until all their books are returned
or payments received. Also, seniors must return their overdue books or pay for them before receiving their diploma. Please
know that the PVHS library does not charge overdue fines, our priority is getting the books back so they can be used by other
students.
Please feel free to contact the librarians with any comments or questions by phone (571-434-4500) or email
([email protected] or [email protected]). We would also love to see you, so stop by!

Sterling, Virginia 20164
Dear Parent of Students in Grades Five through Twelve:
Eating disorders are serious health problems that usually start in childhood
or adolescence and affect both girls and boys. With early diagnosis, eating
disorders are treatable with a combination of nutritional, medical, and therapeutic
supports. Recognizing the importance of early identification of at-risk students,
the 2013 Virginia General Assembly passed a law requiring each school board to
provide parent educational information regarding eating disorders on an annual
basis to students in the fifth through twelfth grades.
It is important to note that eating disorders are not diagnosed based on
weight changes as much as behaviors, attitudes, and mindset. Symptoms may
vary between males and females and in different age groups. Often, a young
person with an eating disorder may not be aware that he/she has a problem or
keeps the issues secret. Parents/guardians and family members are in a unique
position to notice symptoms or behaviors that cause concern. Noting behaviors
common to people with eating disorders may lead to early referral to a primary
care provider. It is important for eating disorders to be treated by someone who
specializes in this type of care.
After reviewing the information on the reverse side of this letter, if you
think your child may be showing signs of a possible eating disorder, please
contact your primary health care provider, school nurse, or one of the resources
listed below.

What Are Eating Disorders?
Eating Disorders are real, complex and devastating conditions that can have serious
consequences for health, productivity, and relationships. They are not a fad, phase or
lifestyle choice. They are potentially life-threatening conditions affecting every aspect of
the person’s functioning, including school performance, brain development, emotional,
social, and physical well-being.
Eating disorders can be diagnosed based on weight changes, but also based
on behaviors, attitudes and mindset. Be alert for any of these signs in your child.
Key things to look for around food: Eating a lot of food that seems out of control (large amounts of food may disappear, you find a
lot of empty wrappers and containers hidden)
Develops food rules-may eat only a particular food or food group, cuts food into very small pieces, or spreads food out on the plate
Talks a lot about, or focuses often, on weight, food, calories, fat grams, and dieting
Often says that they are not hungry
Skips meals or takes small portions of food at regular meals
Cooks meals or treats for others but won’t eat them
Avoids mealtimes or situations involving food
Goes to the bathroom after meals often
Uses a lot of mouthwash, mints, and /or gum
Starts cutting out foods that he or she used to enjoy
Key things to look for around activity: Exercises all the time, more than what is healthy or
recommended -despite weather, fatique, illness, or injury
Stops doing their regular activities, spends more time alone (can be spending more time exercising)
Physical Risk Factors: Feels cold all the time or complains of being tired all the
time. Likely to become more irritable and/or nervous.
Any vomiting after eating (or see signs in the bathroom of vomiting -smell, clogged shower drain)
Any use of laxatives or diurectics (or you find empty packages)
Other Risk Factors Believes that they are too big ot too fat (regardless of
reality)
Asks often to be reassured about how they look
Stops hanging out with their friends
Not able to talk about how they are feeling
Reports others are newly judgemental or “not connecting”
If Your Child Shows Signs of a Possible Eating
Disorder
Seek assistance from a medical professional as soon as possible; because they are so complex,
eating disorders should be assessed by someone who specializes in the treatment of eating
disorders. The earlier a person with an eating disorder seeks treatment, the greater the likehood
of physical and emotional recovery.
Eating disorders
affect both males
and females of all
ages
Weight is NOT the only
indicator of an eating
disorder, as people of
all sizes may be
suffering
How to Communicate with Your
Child
Understand that eating disorder
suffers often deny that there is a
problem
Educate yourself on eating disorders
Ask what you can do to help
Listen openly and reflectively
Be patient and nonjudgemental
Talk with your child in a kind way when you are calm and not
angry, frustrated, or upset
Let him/her know you only want the best for him/her
Remind your child that he/she has people who care and support
him/her
Be flexable and open with your support
Be honest
Show care, concern and understanding
Ask how he/she is feeling
Try to be a good role model-don’t engage in “fat talk” about
yourself
Understand that your child is not looking for attenting or pity
Seek professional help on behalf of your child if you have ANY
concerns
