Year 7 and 8 camp On Monday the 27th March we took the bus to Vertical Horizons, New Plymouth, for our year 7 and 8 camp. It took seven hours to get there because of an accident on the road, where a truck tipped over. So by the time we arrived, we were all bored and really excited to get off the bus and explore the Camp. The Camp had a whole lot of outdoor activities, like the giant Zipline, a giant ladder called the Jacob's Ladder, rock climbing, the Flying Kiwi, where your team had to pull you up into the air by a rope, the Multi Vine, where you had to walk across a high wire while holding onto ropes and lots more fun and challenging activities. Here are some opinions from the students about the camp activities: “ My most favourite part was the Flying kiwi and the Zip line”, said Arthur “ The most challenging part for me was the Multi Vine”, Gabe.M “ My most favourite part was the Flying kiwi because I felt like I was flying”, said Lily.C “ The most challenging part for me was the Multi Vine because my arms were too short to reach the ropes,” said Kyah I thought it was an awesome week, and I hope everyone else thought that too. Curriculum

Year 7 and 8 Technology

Every week, on a Tuesday afternoon our Year 7 and 8 students and one of our teachers catch a bus to Plimmerton School for ‘technology’. This technology programme is similar to what many of us experienced and knew as ‘Manual Training’ when we were at primary school. The range of activities and experiences open to our students today are far greater than what we had.

At the Plimmerton Technology Centre our students learning about cooking, sewing, woodwork, digital technologies, design and engineering. The specialist teachers at the Tech Centre are a very valuable resource for many schools in the area.

Student Leadership

Last week I accompanied our Year 8 students to the GRIP Student Leadership conference in Wellington. This was a great day where our students met student leaders from other schools in the greater Wellington area. They were encouraged to think about ways they could help students, teachers and their local community. Responsibility, Integrity and Generosity were important themes of the day.

Getting to Know Us

Judith Smith I was born in Lancashire,England and spent my first 13 years living on a farm. I had an idyllic childhood with my Mum, Dad, brother and sister and have fond memories of hay time and milking. I began my teaching career in the UK at Nine Acres Primary school on the Isle of Wight. I taught for 14 years there in Reception (New Entrants) before I became the head of Early Years. My husband and I had a holiday of a lifetime visiting New Zealand in 2007 and while we were traveling around fell in love with the country, culture and friendly people. We decided that we would love to bring up our new family in this great place. Our family moved to New Zealand in 2009. We settled in Thames in the Coromandel and spent 5 happy years there. I taught at a small community rural school in Hikutaia. There I was educated into the ways of New Zealand teaching through calf club, ‘proper’ cross country through ditches and farmers cow paddocks, climbing trees, and Waikato rugby “Chiefs style”. I enjoy a challenge and took on the leadership position in literacy which also included being in charge of the school library. We moved to the Kapiti Coast in 2015 and this will be my third year at Paekakariki. I have two boys, Reuben who is a year 9 student at Paraparaumu college and Rowan who is year 5 at Paekakariki. Having two active boys I now know most of the Rugby, Cricket and Football grounds in the Wellington area. My boys can also be found by the water swimming or sailing or trekking over the hills of Waikanae. I try and keep fit by cycling and walking especially during the holidays. In my spare time I am a basketball coach at Hoop club but also just love chilling with a good book in my PJs.

Word of the Week

As you read, listen to others you may see or hear unusual or interesting words. The best word each week shared with me will win 5 house points.

The winning word this week is; Belonging – you feel that the place you are in is where you belong.

Thanks to Jack Gregory who has won 5 points for Haumia House!

I really like the way Jack has summed up one of our school guiding principles.

What is happening at Paekākāriki School?

Paekakariki School Fair is just 4 weeks away!

We are looking for passionate parents to run: • Food stalls; Do you have a secret family recipe you’re dying to dazzle with? • Toy stall; Be a hit with the kids! • Book stall; Get in first and sort and secure some amazing finds! • Waste management coordinator - Love being green? Help us aim for Zero Waste! • Activity or game; Got a great idea you can’t wait to share?

We would also love to hear from keen crafters (especially those who have an amazing idea for a school holiday or evening craft workshop) and parents willing to be Area Coordinators, helping and supporting those running stalls. If this sounds like great fun - let Alexandra Saunders know on 027 932 2587 or email her at [email protected], or the PTA [email protected]

INTER-SCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS

Paekakariki performed with distinction at the recent Kapiti Schools Swimming Sports. We proved to be the top performing school with a roll of 200 or less.

In the Junior Section our school came 5th with 4 schools with rolls in excess of 600 scoring more points in the competition than us. We finished ahead of 5 other schools, all with rolls well in excess of ours. In the Senior Section our school came 4th, an even better achievement than the Juniors. As far as I can work out, our school was the smallest school competing at te event!

Our school has again punched well above its weight and can be extremely proud of its achievement at this event. Final overall results were:

1 Kapanui School 1 628.5 points

2 Raumati Beach School 1 569 points

3 Paraparaumu Beach School 1 496 points

4 Waikanae 1 001.5 points

5 Paekakariki School 985 points

6 Raumati South School 871 points

7 Kenakena School 607.5 points

8 Kapiti School 271.5 points

9 Otaki College 260 points

10 Te Ra School 104 points

Thanks to all the parents who helped on the day – you certainly made my task as Team Manager and Marshall really easy as you worked well as a team, ensuring that my swimmers arrived on time for marshalling.
