Club Minutes Bristol Challenge

Tonight thirty members gathered for our meeting. Jeremiah spoke about the beef and dairy projects. Grace talked about the upcoming fishing derby and her teaching time this Saturday, February 8. This session begins at 10 am at Lake Mary in Twin Lakes and is open to all 4-H members, even those not yet enrolled in the fishing project.

The members who went to the game night or to the sledding agreed both were fun.

We have now held six monthly meetings. Our by-laws require attendance at five meetings. The good news is that we still have four more meetings. We collected aluminum cans.

Mrs. Hipper reported that our collection of non-perishables during our bowling totaled four large bags and three boxes of food. All of the food was donated to the Shalom Center

The YAR grant book is almost finished. Grace asked for a few members to add their comments.

Upcoming:

Cloverbud meetings at February 11 and March 11, at the KCC, at 6:30. Pinewood Derby February 24 at the KCC Elkhorn rabbit show February 8-9.

Our guest speaker was Col. Curtis Ames. He told us about his thirty years in the military and the organization that provides canes for our wounded soldiers. We wrote letters to servicemen and then ate cookies provided by MaryCatherine and Mrs. Slagle.

Our March meeting will be a craft time led by Mrs. Burkhalter. We will collect craft supplies to donate to the Daybreak Senior Center.

May your heart be warmer than the outside air,

Priscilla Kopczynski and Regina LaForge

Salem Pioneers The meeting began with attendance; we then discussed the sledding party we had last month at the hill by

Central High School. Sue, our leader, gave out some last Derby cars, and reminded us all that Project Day had been cancelled, and the new date was March 8th. Next there was a food demonstration. All the members in our club who were in foods came to the front of the room, introduced themselves, and then explained that we would be making butter. They handed out small jars, and filled them partway with whipping cream. Then, everyone shook their jars until they turned to butter! After that was a red-wearing contest. The kids separated into groups and adults counted how many articles of red clothing they were wearing. The results of the competition were as follows:

For boys in grades kindergarten through 3rd, Avery got 2nd place with 1 piece of clothing, and Aiden won 1st place with 28 items. In the group of boys from 4th to 8th grade, Colton achieved 4th place with 8 clothing items, Ben got 3rd with 10 pieces, Jax earned 2nd with 35, and Evan won 1st while wearing 51 clothing pieces. For high school boys, Paxton won 1st place with 9 red items.

The next competition was of girls in grades kindergarten through 3rd. Molly received 6th place with 5 pieces, Jaden won 5th place wearing 21 items, Grace was wearing 32 clothing pieces, so she got 4th place, Charlotte won 3rd while wearing 37 clothing items, Maureen received 2nd place for having 42 clothing articles,

and with a total of 46 pieces was Megan, earning her 1st place. For girls in grades 4th-8th, the competition was tough. In 11th place, there was a tie between Jessa and Naomi, who were both wearing 1 red item apiece. Paige earned 2nd with 2 items, Haley got 9th while wearing 7, Amanda was wearing 8 pieces, so she got 8th place, Jenna had on 9 articles and received 7th place, Makayla won 6th place for having 19 pieces, Maggie had on 20, so she got 5th, Heidi wore 21 items and received 4th place, Elizabeth won 3rd place with 37 pieces, Meadow wore 59 and got 2nd, and then, in 1st place, with a whopping 72 items was Julisa. For high school girls, Cassie won 2nd place for 1 item, and Tiffany earned 1st with 3 clothing items.

The meeting was adjourned, and snacks were served.

Somers Chargers 4-H Club The Somers Chargers 4-H Club meeting was held on February 3, 2014. Sledding had to be cancelled in January due to the extreme cold. The Club discussed rescheduling. Dog Project There are only two more monthly meetings left before training starts.

At the February 18th meeting we introduced our leaders and junior leaders. Melissa N will be teaching agility. Sandy will teach all levels of rally-o. Cindy teaches beginner obedience and showmanship. Karen is your advanced obedience trainer. Melissa P trains pre-novice obedience and helps Sandy with rally-o. Haleigh and Amanda are leaders this year as well. There are also several junior leaders.

If you have any papers that need to be turned in, you can give them to Shelly. All paperwork is due at the March meeting. If you are missing any forms you can go to http://kenosha.uwex.edu/4-H/4-H-dog-project/ All forms are on this website. Reminder: Leash order forms are due at the March meeting as well.

Your homework for this month is to find your dog’s favorite treat; that treat needs to be a treat your dog would die for. Before you decide that you found the perfect treat, go ahead and test it. Take your dog to some place where there are a lot of smells, noise and distraction. Pull out the treat and show it to your dog. If your dog’s full attention is on you, then you got that favorite treat, but if your dog ignores you, try a different treat. Finding your dog’s favorite treat is not easy, but at training it pays off.

Towards the end of the meeting we played a game. Junior leaders went out of the room while members got into groups. Each group was instructed to teach the junior leader (now pretending to be a dog) a new word. It was very frustrating for the junior leaders as they only heard such words as peanut butter, pickles, jump etc.

What a wonderful way to demonstrate why your dog might look at you confused.

Our next meeting will be on March 18th at 6:30pm at the KCC. Our activity for this meeting will consist of a demonstration on the different classes that are available. The board of directors encourages all members to attend as it will be very educational. Note: All junior leaders please arrive at 6:00pm to help setup on this night.

Fair book cover theme will be handed out at the March meeting as well.

There will be a board meeting on March 25th at 7pm. All junior leaders should attend.

Please NO DOGS at the meetings. Thank you.

See you next month, Grace H.

Fishing Project Well hope everyone is enjoying the winter as we have had plenty of ice on the lakes this

year. Just a reminder that the game fishing season is fast approaching the end. Game fish season closes Sunday, March 2nd, so after that you will only be able to fish for panfish.

We had a tremendous time during our annual 4-H kids ice fishing derby on Lake Mary Saturday February 9th. I was cold and snowy, but had a great time and the kids caught a good number of fish. We enjoyed hot dogs, donuts, hot chocolate, chips and other delicious things. We again were able to rent the scout house, so the kids and their parents could warm up, get out of the elements and enjoy some snacks.

We would like to congratulate those that won fish prizes in our derby. Those that won are as follows:

Kyle B 26.0" Northern Pike, Grace H 8.0" Pumpkinseed, Brianna G 7.0" Bluegill, Brooke G 6 3/4" Bluegill, Gabrille C 8 1/2" Perch, Bryce L 7 1/4" Perch, Grace H 7.0" Perch

Thanks to everyone that came out that day and made the day great.

As you read this Home Lite, we will be gearing up for our annual raffle. Please continue to sell tickets and if you can get donations that would be great. The success of our raffle depends on what we are able do in our project.

We will be having a meeting Saturday April 5th at the Bristol Town Hall. We will be having a couple of teaching sessions and building spinner/buzz baits and jigs. Watch your e-mails for further details.

Again if there are any questions please let us know. Thanks, Glen, 262-694-1120

Foods Project Do you have a relative who doesn’t eat meat? Do you want to make cookies for a friend

(or 4-H leader!) who is gluten-free? Have you ever tried to make a recipe with less sugar? We will have the opportunity to try several different recipe modifications so that you can prepare foods for anyone.

The meeting will be held at 7pm at Central High School in the foods lab. A $2 donation is requested to help cover the cost of ingredients

Goat Project We had a great educational meeting in February on goat conformation. Thanks to

Natalie for putting together our presentation.

Our next meeting is Saturday March 15th at 10:00 am. It will be held at Wesley Chapel at the corner of Q(165) and U. Please note the change in location from the 4-H calendar.

Happy kidding to all expecting this spring!

Horse Project IT’S ROUND ROBIN TIME!! The date is Friday, March 14th. Bristol Vet will be offering

the shots at a discount for our 4-H members. If you wish to participate in the round robin contact Karen Rudie at [email protected] as soon as possible so she can get you on the list. You will need to provide your name, phone number and address as well as

how many horses will be getting vaccinated.

The Round-Robin is offered by Bristol Vet to 4-H Horse Project members only. There is a limit of 2 horses per member or 4 per family and the veterinarian will only vaccinate the 4-H project horses on March 14th. Other horses at your barn can not be vaccinated on that date (not even for the non-discount price) so please don’t ask Bristol Vet to do so. Tetanus, East & West, Coggins, Flu & Rhino and West Nile shots will all be given. All these shots must be given in order to participate at fair. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT BRISTOL VET IF YOU PLAN ON PARTICIPATING IN THE ROUND ROBIN. Contact Karen Rudie and she can answer your questions and set you up for the March 14th date. Only the one date will be provided thru the horse project. Due to fair board regulations, if you plan on giving shots to your own horse you MUST have a signed letter from the vet (on the veterinarian’s letterhead) that he/she observed you giving the shots. Participants who have signed up will be sent a confirmation e-mail that you are on the list for the round-robin shots. Please contact Karen Rudie if you do not receive your confirmation by March 7th which will be the last day names will be taken for participation in the Round-Robin.

Mark your calendars…. Mini-Camp is May 10th and May 11th. There will be an overnite lock in. Please get your registration form in early so that the chairpersons (Toni Luhman and Sally Hipper) can plan accordingly. There is also an emergency contact sheet and health form that you will need to fill out (forms are on line).

If you plan on showing at the fair, the next thing on your to-do list should be submitting your horse ID sheet to the UW Extension Office (19600 75 ST, Box #2, Bristol WI 53104) Due date is May 1st (horseless horse members due date is June 2nd). A copy of the horse ID sheet was in your packet you received at the beginning of the project year. If you need additional copies, go to the website and print one off there at http://kenosha.uwex.edu/4-h/horse-program One ID sheet should be submitted for each horse/pony you intend to show at this year’s fair.

With the show season fast approaching, the project’s youth board provided a fashion show for project members at the February 19th countywide meeting. Having many years of show experience behind them, the youth board pointed out many dos and don’ts of what you should wear at a show, what judges look for and

Page 8: Home Lite - counties.extension.wisc.edu fileVolume 42, Issue #3 March 2014 -- Page 3 Club Minutes Bristol Challenge Tonight thirty members gathered for our meeting. Jeremiah spoke

how you should present yourself at the shows. These were all helpful reminders and hints for a successful show season. Our new members should always feel free to approach any of the more experienced members with questions about being in a horse show. The first show for our horse project is May 18th

Make sure you are meeting all of your meeting requirements and that you’ve signed up for at least two service points. Track and verify your meeting attendance on the 4-H website.

SAVE THE DATE: The project has tentatively scheduled a bus day trip to the Illinois College of Veterinary medicine in Champagne/Urbana on October 5th. Look for more details in the near future.

HORSE PROJECT WEAR: The horse project will be selling t-shirts (and hopefully pajama pants, sweatshirts, etc) and we need your design ideas. Design this year’s project wear! Keep your design simple (with clean lines and not too many details) and bring it to the next countywide meeting on March 19th The project members will vote on this year’s design from those submitted at the meeting that night.

JACKIE FRANCOIS AWARD: The Jackie Francois Memorial Award is now on line. http://kenosha.uwex.edu/4-h/horse-program/

Think warm thoughts and see you on March 19th.

Sheep Project The Wisconsin Junior Targhee Sheep Association will be giving away a starter flock of three Targhee ewes in 2014 to a lucky Wisconsin youth. Applicants must be aged 12 to 17 as of January 1, 2014, must be a resident of Wisconsin, and must not currently raise Targhee sheep. The winner must also be eligible and agree to exhibit their animals at both the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair open sheep show and Wisconsin Junior State Fair sheep show. The winner will receive

a combination of ewe lambs, yearling ewes and/or brood ewes, and take ownership of the animals before any 2014 State Fair ownership deadlines.

The Targhee breed has a long history in Wisconsin, and the purpose of this program is to promote growth and visibility of the breed along with promoting youth involvement and education within the breed. Applications are available on-line at both the US Targhee Sheep Association website (http://www.ustargheesheep.org/) and the A&J Nevens Livestock website (http://myplace.frontier.com/~jrnevens/), and are due no later than April 1, 2014. Swine Project 173 days until weigh in at the fair! Most of the pigs you will show at this year’s fair would have

been born these past few weeks. Thank you to everyone who came out to the Lake Geneva Meats educational meeting on Monday Feb 10th. I hope that everyone was able to ask questions and get

some answers. A reminder an email with a feedback questionnaire came to everyone later in the week. I only heard from one person pertaining to the program. It helps the team out a lot if we receive feedback so we can make sure you as the member are getting everything you need from us. If you can take the time and look at it and send it that would be great. New member orientation was cancelled due to the weather but a make-up date was set.

MAQA is coming up the month of March. Dates for Kenosha County are Monday March 31st. Test out begins at 5:15pm and the program starts at 6pm with a re-test at 7:30pm. Letters will be coming out to everyone letting you know if you need to attend the mandatory course. There is a date for Racine scheduled for Sat March 8 at 8:15am test-out and 9am training. All first year members must attend the program no testing for first year members are allowed.

The Executive Board will be meeting on Thursday March 13th 7-8pm at the KCC. The next educational meeting will be held Thursday March 20 6:30pm. At the Kenosha County Center How to read ear notches!

Any questions or concerns please contact John Capra at 262-496-1289 or Angie Nelson 262-945-1815. See everyone soon!
