2011 heralds new colour trends for decorating a home. They’re vibrant and fresh, fun and exciting, and they’ll definitely add a new dimension to yourliving spaces.

For many, 2010 was a year of highs and lows. We experienced the joy and excitement of the World Cup, saw an increase in corruption, had doubts about our water and electricity supply, and still managed to see the sun shine at the end of the day.

A home should be a retreat from the harsh realities of life - a place that you love to come home to at the end of each day.

Decorating a home to suit your - and your family’s - needs and personalities is a way to break away from mundane and routine daily living - to add some excitement to life and experience something new.

powerful bond to its mother colour red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue

in the spectrum.

ABOVE: Naturally, zingy hues like lime green are great for kids’ rooms and

playrooms. And it’s not just for modern homes -- here it is in a character-rich

room with high baseboards, distressed wide-plank floors and French doors for

a totally fresh look.

Dressing Up

Dressing up a bedroom for a little girl or young lady can be a fun way for mom and daughter to bond when making colour choices and buying accessories for the bedroom. Here are some inspiring bedroom and great tips to guide you.

Every young lady - from three to one hundred and three - loves to dress up, whether it’s for a special occasion or dressing up a special bedroom.

PREVIOUS PAGE: Woven place mats in magenta provide the perfect backdrop for cut out letters.

Use 12mm supawood and have the wood cut to a suitable size that allows you to easily cut out with a jigsaw and clean cut blade. Use an 8 or 10mm drill to drill a hole to insert the jigsaw blade for cutting out inside the letters.

ABOVE: Wide blue stripes give this bedroom a fresh, beachy feel when combined with white furniture, crisp white linens and blue accents. The chandelier adds a more girlie feel to the room.

Use a Bosch PFS spray system for a perfect finish on painted furniture. The PFS reaches difficult spots and other hard-to-reach areas.

ABOVE: Trendy pink, white and black teen bedroom.

RIGHT: Fresh and pretty butterflygarden. Pastel green walls with a white picket fence design are a perfect match for a butterflybedroom with pink, green and magenta accessories.

Striped walls are easily painted by masking off the walls with various widths of masking tape.

To prevent the stripe colour from bleeding underneath the tape, first paint over the tapeedge with the base coat; let dry. If any paint bleeds under the tape, it will be the base colour and not noticeable.

9

The LookGet the perfect atmosphere by

choosing the right accessories.

Furniture

For little girls and young ladies, furniture should be sturdy and designed to last them from tot to teen.

Plain pine or supawood furniture is strong and can easily be stained or painted.

If the size of the room allows, invest in a three-quarter or double bed so that you need not face this expense in the future.

Soft furnishingsFor curtains, blinds or shades the fabric should be versatile, with patterns matching the theme of the room for pillows, bedding and lampshades, etc.

AccessoriesBe bold with accessories to bring out the best in a room. These are easily changed to change the look of a room and can be purchased at affordable home decor stores - or get crafty and make your own!

Walls and floorWhimsical borders, bold stripes or stencilled designs - make sure walls are washable by using a sheen paint.

Anything goes for floors! Carpet is soft underfoot but choose a shade that will not easily show traffic and dirt. Cushioned vinyl and laminate floors are practical andeasy to clean and can be softened with rugs and mats in bright colours.

No. 1Get

Organised!

This year I have decided to ditch the New

Year resolutions in favour of getting organised. So, instead of making resolutions I

never, ever stick to - I’m organising my life instead.

On the next few pages are some crafty and fun projects that will inspire you to become more

organised , whether at home or work.

New Year’s Resolution

Take Note...

These notepads are super easy

to make and a fun way to journal

or keep notes.

Gather supplies and cut your papers to

size. I also put card-board on the back of each one, but that is

optional and completely up to you.

steel ruler cutter

fabric off-cuts or wrapping paper

note papercardboard

Here’s how:1. Cut cardboard and note

paper to the same size using a steel ruler and cutter on a cutting mat.

2. Staple the note pad to the cardboard along the top.

3. Fold the fabric over the front and back of the pads and sew in place. If you don’t have a sewing machine you can hand stitch, staple or glue, whichever is easier.

TOOLS:Jigsaw and clean-cut bladeSculpting tools180-grit sandpaper

TIME: 2 hours (excl. drying time for clay)

COST: R60 to make 4

Here’s how:1. For the blackboard cut a piece of

hardboard to 300 x 250mm. Spray one side with Rust-Oleum chalkboard spray and leave to dry.

2. Cut the frame to 320 x 270mm. Mark a border 30mm border around the frame and cut out the inner section. Sand smooth with 180-grit sandpaper. Paint with white craft acrylic.

3. Glue the frame to the back with contact adhesive.

4. Sculpt a design using Jovi or Das clay: roll a long sausage approx. 5mm in diameter to craft the individual sections which are then placed together to dry overnight. Attach to front of frame with epoxy glue.

You will definitely need plenty ofpens and pencils to take down notes on your new note pads. And having them all in one spot will save you lots of time.

Make a pen and pencil holder using scraps of fabric, ribbon or other favourite embellishments.

Here’s how:1. Cut scraps to fit around the tin.

2. Attach double-sided tape to the back and stick onto the tin.

3. Leave no gaps and layer the embellishments for a more dimensional look.

You will need:

File Away...

pattern on back pages

Recycle cardboard boxes to make stylish file folders for your homeoffice.

You will find a pattern template on theback pages for you to print out and enlarge to make your own file folders.

Score the cardboard with a blunt knife to bend to shape and stick the edges together with double-sided carpet tape (stronger than standard double-sided tape).

Contact self-adhesive vinyl is the easiest way to cover up the file boxes, but youcan also use Bostik spray adhesive and wrapping or scrapbooking papers.

You will find the metal tags at hobby, art &craft or stationary stores or order online at www.ScrapbookRhapsody.com

I’ve been trying to decide what to make my hubby for a Valentine’s gift. I wanted to give him more than a card - so I decided to make him a mini journal / album / book of things I love about him; different memories I have of our life together.

I found a tutorial awhile back about button and string closures and somehow wanted to incorporate this and that’s how I came up with this fun journal. It has sort of a vintage feel - the button and string closure, and a bunch of found papers inside, including old school writing pages, graph paper and strategically cut magazine pages.

Use them for any occasion - to record a special event, to keep as a personal journal, to write a

note to a friend - so many possibilities!

You will needCardstock for coverInside pages (as many as you like) 2 eyelets (or brads)String (or embroidery thread)2 paper round die cuts Eyelet punch, eyelet setter and hammerStapler and staplesScissorsRulerPaper scorer (an item with a dull edge)

I you!

Page 17: Home-Dzine online · BELOW: Perfect for any little princess. Rather than have a cumbersome netted canopy over the bed, the crown canopy still provides a princess theme and is far

15

Here’s how:1. Take your cover sheet and score a line

4cm in from the right side. Now score a line 12cm in from the left side.

2. Centre one of the paper round die cuts on the outside flap.

Using your eyelet punch and hammer, punch through the die cut and cover sheet at the same time (hole punched should be in the middle of the die cut). Set one of the eyelets through this hole.

3. Fold your cover closed and line up the other paper round die cut about 2cm from the other die cut you just set.

Insert the end of the string inbetween the eyelets and punch in place.

4. Trim off the extra string after setting the eyelet.

5. Now you need to attach the inside pages. It can be tricky if you don’t have a large stapler, but another idea is hand sewing it with a needle and embroidery thread. That way actually looks so attractive that I’m going to do it that way next time around!

You can buy all your supplies for this project at craft, hobby or scrapbooking shops.

The Look If you can’t source an eyelet kit, you

can always use small decorative brads.

18

You will need

We created a crackle effect on an old chest of drawers for a unique and colourful effect for a little girl’s bedroom.

For this effect, crackle medium is applied in between the base coat and top coat. The medium stretches when it gets wet, causing the top-coat of paint to crack and exposing the base-coat colour underneath.

The thickness of the top-coat paint will determine the size of the cracks. A thin layer produces smaller, finer cracks, while aheavier layer results in larger cracks.

If you apply the top-coat with a roller, cracks will be finer; a brushwill give larger cracks.

DIY Tip:Never try to rebrush the top-coat; touch-ups will be obvious and will not crack again. If this happens, allow to dry overnight, sand using 120-grit sandpaper, and remove dust with a clean cloth. Recoat with the crackle medium, and allow to dry about two hours before applying the top coat.

19

Here’s how:

1. Paint the entire cabinet and drawer fronts with two coats of white. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next coat. Leave to dry overnight.

2. Coat each drawer front with the crackle medium. Brush on thoroughly, then allow to dry for at least two hours. Working on one drawer at a time, apply a top coat in one of the four colours in the list.

With a trim brush, quickly edge the drawer front sides. Paint using vertical brush strokes across the drawer as quickly as possible.

The process needs to be started and finished quickly as the finish will begin tocrackle within a few minutes.

Repeat this process with each drawer front. Allow to dry.

3. Prime and paint the unfinished woodenknobs in the colours found in the list and place on different coloured drawer fronts.

Place as shown or mix and match as you please.

To attach, drill a hole in the same size as the screws for the knobs.

4. For lasting durability, protect your piece by brushing on two or three coats of clear acrylic sealer after the top coat has dried for at least 24 hours.

Rough, coarse textures tend to make an object feel heavier, while smoother textures will make it feel lighter. So as odd as it may seem, a polished marble floor (quite heavyin reality) may feel lighter than a rough wooden one. Any object that reflects light- polished stone, chrome or glass - is going to feel lighter than objects that don’t - unpolished stone, iron or brick.

The key is balanceToo much rough wood, stone and brick and a home can feel heavy and laden-down. Too much chrome, glass and stainless steel, and a home can feel cold and one-dimensional. A mix of the two and you’ve made an interesting, and surprising statement.

Texture is a great way to keep mono-chromatic environments from being boring.

All white interiors can feel pretty stagnant without texture to create interest. Think how boring shabby chic would be without the distressed wood.

More than thick socks and wool cardigans, texture can be an incredibly sensuous design element in your home. True, it’s subtle but texture can pull your room into a whole new direction that will make it feel richer without having to strain.

Texture your home

Page 23: Home-Dzine online · BELOW: Perfect for any little princess. Rather than have a cumbersome netted canopy over the bed, the crown canopy still provides a princess theme and is far

21

ABOVE: Soften the floor with rugs. You can also use rugs to define a space, as is the casewith this open-plan dining area.

BELOW: Textures abound in this master bedroom: soft rug, grass wall, silk and brocade pillows.

Page 24: Home-Dzine online · BELOW: Perfect for any little princess. Rather than have a cumbersome netted canopy over the bed, the crown canopy still provides a princess theme and is far

22

However, an all-white colour scheme with a little wood, shag carpets, mouldings, and a few natural textured surfaces suddenly has pizazz.

Art can be an easy way to add texture.

If you’re looking for ways to add a little texture to a space that is already largely in place, one easy way to do so is through art.

You can find texture in sculpture, paintingsand various wall hangings.

Other textural elements include the wooden beams, the organic wooden table, sisal carpeting, leather chairs, and blocky, sculptural wooden stools which contrast against white-washed floors, awhite ceramic lamp, and fibreglass chairs.

Textured floors can include stone, wood orbamboo laminate, wood, brick, carpet or tile. Or add small areas of texture with rugs like shag, sisal, sea grass or bamboo.

For instant impact add layered window treatments to a room. Start off with blinds (fabric, timber or bamboo) and finish offwith heavy fabric or light sheer depending on the mood you want to create in the room.

23

While dark wood can look elegant, it can also look sombre and heavy. Here are some tips on how to lighten things up if you’ve already filled your home with darkwooden furniture.

Brighten walls with colourTry lightening up by bringing in colour through walls and rugs. Rich dark hues will extend the sophisticated look of your dark wood and actually make your dark wood feel less dark, as there will be less of a contrast than with white, or light walls.

Use artworkIn the bedroom below, framed photos on the wall help lighten up the feel of the dark wood bed. A bedside table of a lighter wood helps give the room a more eclectic feel than it would have with every wood matching. Bold and colourful artwork work especially well as a balance to dark wood.

The Dark AgesMix up with light or white Create a chic and sophisticated backdrop by using all white walls and fabrics in your space.

Be aware that if you paint the room white, the contrast will be greater between your dark furniture and the walls. This could work well if you’re looking for a high-impact modern look that emphasises the dark wood but not if you’re hoping to make the darkness of the wood less striking. (Stick to deep colour for this effect.)

Add more texturesConsider using chrome, metals and other finishes to contrast with the wood. I

Dark furniture stains have become all the rage in the last few years. We’ve seen imbuia, mahogany,

and even ebony, everywhere. Especially among those furniture retailers touting urban sophistication

and elegance.

25

Use mirrors liberallyA large mirror or a collection of mirrors will bounce light around the room, making your room feel a little lighter, brighter, less sombre.

Make use of vibrant, punchy fabricsColourful pillows, drapes, rugs and upholstery coverings can help soften dark wood and make it feel far less serious. So use vibrant colour to your advantage where possible. Neutral rugs, drapes and pillows will emphasise the darkness of the wood.

Go darkTo transform your wood furniture use Woodoc 5 or Woodoc 10 interior sealer and a stain concentrate to stain and seal your indoor furniture.

So what are the benefits of installing bamboocountertops:

• Bamboo is the most water tolerant of timbers, which is important when installed in a kitchen/bathroom countertop application.

• Bamboo is durable, yet “soft” and warm to the touch - unlike granite and marble.

• Bamboo can be stained, painted, varnished, oiled or waxed, so changing your decor is a simple refinishing job, not a replacement job.

• Bamboo has a higher tensile strength than cold pressed steel - you only need an 18-20mm thick top.

• Bamboo is very competitively priced vs other solid wood tops.

GoGreen at home

Having stated the benefits, let’s take a lookat some of the negative factors of installing bamboo countertops:

Bamboo will scorch if a hot pot is placed on the counter top. While this can be repaired inexpensively - use a pot trivet to avoid damage.

Exposed raw bamboo will mould if exposed to moisture (as will other timbers/products used for tops). If, however, the bamboo top is sealed all round this won’t be a problem.

Bamboo countertops that are longer than 2.44 m long are more expensive, as the presses required are very expensive and the wastage is higher during manufacturing. Due to the even grain of bamboo tops, one can butt shorter tops together and the join will be difficult to see (ifjoined by an experienced craftsman).

Did you know that Bamboo countertops are just as durable as solid timber countertops - with one major difference... it’s a sustainable alternative.

Page 31: Home-Dzine online · BELOW: Perfect for any little princess. Rather than have a cumbersome netted canopy over the bed, the crown canopy still provides a princess theme and is far

29

Not all bamboo tops are manufactured to the same standards

LEFT: The two boards in the middle were immersed in water for a month - the two boards on the outside were not exposed to any water. The delaminated natural bamboo board (middle left) was supplied by a manufacturer who used unspecifiedglue and manufacturing process. The carbonised and fully intact water soaked board (middle right) is manufactured using a specified glue and manufacturing process.

Eco-Logic unique countertop boards are available in the standard colours; lighter blonde (natural) or the darker coffee (carbonised) colours, as well as in the vertical and horizontal construction formats.

In addition, bamboo stains wonderfully, so whatever colour or finish (stain, paint, wax, oil, polyurethane, etc)you desire can be applied to your counter top board. So if you’re wanting a dark finish, no problem, any colouryou want and it’s possible.

Visit Eco Logic Bamboo for more information.

31

Your first power tools

Besides a toolbox, there are three essential power tools that every Diva needs, whether it’s for home repairs and improvements or making your own projects.

Which drill? While yesterday’s cordless power tools had a tendency to die in the middle of a project - mostly due to non-conditioning of the battery - the new Lithium-Ion drill/drivers offer much longer use and quick charging time.

Did you know that by conditioning a new

battery you can extend the life and ensure maximum charge?

Check the instruction manual for details

on how to go about conditioning.

Small Steps

To become more confident with yourtools, make small projects before

attempting the ‘big stuff!’

Break it downIf you are planning to start a big project, such as renovating a

bathroom, break it down into smaller projects. Replacing a toilet, basin or bath sounds far less daunting than ripping out a whole bathroom.

Do I need a jigsaw? You can have most of your timber and board cut at your local hardware store, but if you need to cut corner, curves or other shapes you will definitely need a jigsaw. Once youhave mastered the technique of using a jigsaw you will realise just how handy it is to own one.
