BURIALS IN THE ABBEY OF HOLYROODHOUSE.rpHE Registers of Burials in the church and churchyard of-*- Holyrood begin with a single detached pagethe recordof the years 1565-68. After a blank they begin again in1612, and continue, for a time in duplicate even, till 1675.These Registers are in the Register House. In 1672 thePrivy Council " at his Majesty's desire discharged the use ofthe church as a parish church

"(Scott Fasti). But it wasnot till 1691 that a new parish church (the Canongate

Church) was founded, and only about the same time that anew burial-ground for the parish was provided. HolyroodChurch had been designed by the king in 1672 to be used asa Chapel Royal exclusively, but it continued to be a place ofburial for members of the nobility, and for distinguishedstrangers who died in Edinburgh. The date when the separate Register of these burialsbegins is 17th January, 1706. The original register of themnot being a parish register, is at Holyrood House. A certifiedcopy from of the last-mentioned date till 28th August, 1854, ispreserved in the custody of the Registrar of the CanongateDistrict. Prefixed to it are some extracts from Sir JamesBalfour's historical works, narrating previous burials in theAbbey, &c. Another copy, which belonged to the late SirWilliam Fraser, is in the Lyon Office. It is from this lattercopy that the first part of the following print is made ; theremainder is from that in the hands of the District Registrar. We are indebted to Mr. F. J. Grant, Rothesay Herald, forthe transcript from which the print is now made.
