Call Committee Recommends
Pastor Gerry Johnson Special Congregation Meeting Set for March 5
Well, it looks like we are through most of the winter, and we
are certainly no worse for the wear. The weather this week-end [Feb 25-26] is supposed to be nearly 70 degrees and a
great weekend for flying, working outside, exercising outside, and generally just enjoying life. I’m celebrating!
I’m also celebrating the work of our Call Committee and the Church Council. The Call process was much more laborious
than I ever imagined it would be, and it has taken hard work by all of us. From the Church Assessment Tool to the comple-
tion of the Mission Site Profile, the Transition Team was fully
engaged. Then the Call Committee was selected, interviewed many candidates, and finally selected a primary candidate. Next the Council met and inter-
viewed the candidate. Each step sounds fast and easy, but remember that we live in Loudoun County, where all have busy family, work and social lives, and we needed to
come together as groups each step along the way. There were a lot of moving parts!
And now it is back to the entire Congregation. On Sunday, the 5th of March, Pastor
Gerry Johnson will preach at the 9:30 Service. After the service, he will devote about 30 minutes to speaking with the Congregation and will let everyone get to know a bit about
himself. We will have a Synod representative with us that day, someone who will once
again go over the entire process and will share some views from the Bishop. Following
Ash Wednesday - March 1, 2017 A day of Worship and prayerful fellowship

Call Meeting on the 4th of March. If you have time, please try to stop in
sometime between 6:00pm and 7:30pm that evening. We will have cheese and crackers and soft drinks and coffee.
If you have any questions on the process, I am always available to answer or to help you find the answer. I have
been honored to be a part of this process, and as I told someone the other day, I believe that I have prayed more
during this process than I ever prayed during combat in my previous career!
Over the next couple of weeks, I’d ask you to please
plan to join us in this process and pray that we select some-one who will …preach the word; be ready in season and
out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” (2 Timothy 4:2)
The entire selection process was a lengthy journey, fraught with many twists and turns, but I think the end is
clearly in sight for our congregation and is marked by a bright, shining new light. (Please see a brief biography on
page 5.) John Sapienza, Congregation President
that, we as a congregation will vote on having Pastor Gerry
be our next fulltime pastor.
This meeting is very important, as you can imagine.
Currently, our congregation rolls show about 435 confirmed members, as defined by the Synod definition. Of this num-
ber, we need to have 1/3 present at the Call vote, or 145 confirmed members. And of those who attend this
congregational meeting, we need a 2/3 majority to select
the pastor. (Recently, our typical attendance of con-firmed members has been 70-80 members, so please
make every effort to be present on the 5th.)
** Children’s activities are planned for the
time during the meeting. **
Everyone will have a chance to meet Pastor Johnson
and his wife Sandy at a casual get together at the church

Our First Communion Instruction will be held
Sunday, March 20, 11:00 AM - 1:15 PM
Students will receive their First Communion on April 2, 2017.
This class teaches our youth more about the Lord’s Supper to prepare
them to join us at the Table. It is designed for students in grade 2 and
above. Parents should plan to join their child(ren) for this one-time
class. Registration materials will be mailed to all second-grade chil-
dren. Please contact Mary Samios (708.777.4912 x4 or email
[email protected] ) if you feel your child is
ready to take this important step in their Christian education. The stu-
dents will be recognized on Sunday, April 2, 2017 during worship. For many participants, this will be
the first time they join us at the Lord’s Table for Communion. There will be a reception immediately
following the service in the Commons. Please join us to support these children as they take this im-
portant step in their lifelong journey of faith.

From Our Vice President Months ago I wrote about trying something new, or
perfecting the old. Recently, I decided to ‘relearn’ the Bass Guitar, something I had not played in almost 30
years. So, I bought a Bass and an Amplifier, a couple of picks, and some scales and exercises. Fun, right? Not
so much at first. But this process brought to mind a
couple of things, I will explain.
The Church Council has been reading the book “The
Servant” by James Hunter. This book cen-ters around a group of people on retreat
exploring leadership and the traits of good leaders and leadership in practice. Near
the end of the book, one of the goals of
the retreat was revealed and that is the 4 stages of learning good skills and bad
skills, whatever choice an individual makes. These stages are:
1. Unconscious and Unskilled
2. Conscious and Unskilled
3. Conscious and Skilled
4. Unconscious and Skilled
So, how does this apply to my playing Bass? Well, having played quite a bit in my high school
and college years, I thought of myself at least in Stage
3. But, I found, not so. I was feeling awkward, unnatu-ral and downright not very good, although I had some
fundamentals that I had not lost. More like a Stage 2. After a few short weeks, I do think I am now at Stage 3,
but only a start. I do look forward to when I can play
the Bass without even thinking about it (Stage 4). Oh,
but to be perfect, right?
We should look at James 1:4 “And let steadfastness
have its full effect, that you may be perfect and com-plete, lacking in nothing.” My goal may be to play the
Bass perfect, but it cannot be, for perfection does not
mean in one single activity or item, but it does mean to stand fast in faith as James writes. So, perhaps my goal
here should be to play the Bass as well as I can, for now, and seek the enjoy-
ment that comes from it. Complete per-fection will only come on the day of
death, or at Christ’s return, whichever
comes first.
I know playing the Bass Guitar is just
that, playing, and by no means tanta-mount with meeting our God. But, per-
haps it provides a framework for what
Jesus sees as perfection. Seeing my task to completion, in whatever form
that takes is my goal. At a higher level, it’s not perfection that Jesus is asking for
but its completion; completion of the duty to love God above everything and everyone and to
love others. Remember Matthew 19:21 “Jesus said to
him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heav-
en; and come, follow me.” Take with you these thoughts, whether you are playing the Bass or striving
for completion of your love of God.

“THANK-YOU” to Jack Allen for officially taking over the

Little Blessings Preschool - February Summary
February was a busy month at Little Blessings Preschool! We opened registration for the 2017-
2018 and are happy to report that we almost filled all classes. We still have openings in our three-
year-old classes for next year so please pass on this information to any friends or neighbors who may
be interested.
The children celebrated Valentine’s Day with parties and our Red class celebrated their 100th
Day with activities, games and all things 100! We had a visit from a local dentist to teach the chil-
dren about good dental hygiene and we ended the month with our Patriotic show presented by the
four-year-old classes.
In March at Little Blessings we look forward to celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with plenty of fun activities
each day! Our Green Café will be up and running for the kids to prepare green eggs and more! We also will be par-
ticipating in “Read Across America” to see how many books we can read at home.
In Chapel the kids will learn the story of Easter. Each child will get to take home their Resurrection Eggs so
they can share the Easter story at home as well.
Thank you to Holy Trinity staff and members for the continued support throughout the school year.
