Seasonal Sentence I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to his word. Luke 1.38 The Gathering of The Community (Page 230) Celebrant: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. All: And with thy spirit.

Celebrant: Let us pray. THE ADVENT WREATH FOURTH CANDLE - The Candle of Love

Leader: Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord All: Thanks be to God

Leader: Today the candles of HOPE, PEACE, and JOY continue to burn in the Advent Wreath. On this the fourth Sunday in Advent, we light the candle of LOVE as we continue to prepare ourselves for the joyful celebration of the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

The fourth candle is lit.

Christmas happened because of God’s great love for all people. As we gather to open Christmas gifts with our family, we can reflect on some of the most memorable gifts we’ve received - the love and thought and care that has gone into that gift. God has given us the greatest gift because of his great love for us. All: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Leader: Let us pray. All: Lord, you promise that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Thank you for giving us your Son. Help us to extend the love of Jesus to all those whom you’ve put in our lives, and to see others as you see them, as dearly beloved children of God. Amen.

The Collect (Page 272) Celebrant: Let us pray Heavenly Father, who chose the Virgin Mary, full of grace, to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour, now fill us with your grace, that we in all things may embrace your will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All: Amen.

The First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16 Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent." Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you." But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever. Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Psalm 89:1-4,19-26 (Page 823)

1 Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; *from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.

2 For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; *you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens.

3 “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; *I have sworn an oath to David my servant:

4 ‘I will establish your line for ever, *and preserve your throne for all generations.’”

19 You spoke once in a vision and said to your faithful people: *“I have set the crown upon a warrior and have exalted one chosen out of the people.

20 I have found David my servant; *with my holy oil have I anointed him. 21 My hand will hold him fast *and my arm will make him strong. 22 No enemy shall deceive him, *nor any wicked man bring him down. 23 I will crush his foes before him *and strike down those who hate him. 24 My faithfulness and love shall be with him, and he shall be victorious through

my name. 25 I shall make his dominion extend *from the Great Sea to the River. 26 He will say to me, ’You are my Father, *my God, and the rock of my salvation’

Remember us, gracious God, when we cannot see your way and purpose, and renew in us the joy of your kingdom of light and life. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen The Second Reading: Romans 16:25-27 Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith - to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Reader: The Lord be with you. All: And with thy spirit.

Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (1:26-38) All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings,

Page 6: Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill · Phone: 905 889 5931 Fax: 905 889 5632 info@holytrinity-thornhill.ca “Something good is happening here!!” OUR RULE OF LIFE As members of Holy

favoured one! The Lord is with you." But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God." Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. Reader: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise be to thee, O Christ. Homily

The Nicene Creed (Page 234) All: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God, of God; Light, of Light; very God, of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; through whom all things were made: who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets.

And I believe one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who in the fullness of time came among us in our flesh and opened to us the way of salvation. Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world; that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying: All: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or sit as you are able.

Celebrant: All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption.

He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. All: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee, and we pray to thee, Lord our God.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of

this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God.

Communion Interlude (Ave Maria)

Prayer after Communion (Page 248) Celebrant: Let us pray, All: We most heartily thank thee, almighty and everliving God, that thou dost graciously feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood Of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; assuring us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are living members of his mystical Body, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith - to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn 362 Tell Out, My Soul (vv 1,2,3 before the Gospel) Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; Tender to me the promise of his word; In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; His mercy sure, from age to age the same; His holy name – The Lord, the mighty one.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by; Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

The Gospel Reader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (1:26-38) All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favoured one! And now, your relative Elizabeth

in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God." Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. Reader: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord

To children’s children and for evermore!

SERMON The Apostles’ Creed (Page 189) Celebrant: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers Of The People For our Leadership… Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury, Fred our Primate, Colin,

The Confession & Absolution (Page 191) Celebrant: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.

Silence All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. All: And also with you.

Please greet one another with a sign of peace.

Offertory Hymn 108 Hark, A Herald Voice Is Sounding Hark, a herald voice is sounding: “Christ is nigh,” it seems to say, ‘Cast away the dreams of darkness. O ye children of the day!’

Wakened by the solemn warning, let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ her sun, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies.

Lo, the Lamb, so long expected, comes with pardon down from heaven; Let us all, with deep repentance, pray that we may be forgiven.

That when next he comes with glory, and the world is wrapped in fear, With his mercy he may shield us, and with words of love draw near.

Honour, glory, might and blessing To the Father and the Son,

With the everlasting Spirit, while eternal ages run.

Prayer over The Gifts (Page 272) Celebrant: Let us pray. Gracious God, by the power of the Spirit who sanctified the mother of your Son, make holy all we offer you this day. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. All: Amen. Eucharistic Prayer 1 (Page 193) Celebrant: The Lord is with you. People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is indeed right that we should praise you, gracious God, for you created all things. You formed us in your own image: male and female you created us. When we turned away from you in sin, you did not cease to care for us, but opened a path of salvation for all people. You made a covenant with Israel, and through your servants Abraham and Sarah gave the promise of a blessing to all nations. Through Moses you led your people from bondage into freedom; through the prophets you renewed your promise of salvation. Therefore, with them, and with all your saints who have served you in every age, we give thanks and raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or sit as you are able. Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He healed the sick and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners; he opened the eyes of the blind and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and to those in need. In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.

On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “ Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “ Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Gracious God, his perfect sacrifice destroys the power of sin and death; by raising him to life you give us life for evermore. Therefore we proclaim our hope. All: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory).

Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection, and looking for his coming again in glory, we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one holy people, a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer (page 211) Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour has taught us, we are bold to say, People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread – 5 (page 212) Celebrant: God of promise, you prepare a banquet for us in your kingdom. People: Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

The Communion Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. All: Thanks be to God.

Lamb of God Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace, grant us peace. Communion Hymn 101 Hail To The Lord’s Anointed

Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun!

He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, To take away transgression and rule in equity.

He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, And love, joy, hope, like flowers spring in his path to birth. Before him on the mountains shall peace the herald go, And righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow.

Kings shall fall down before him, and gold and incense bring; All nations shall adore him, his praise all people sing. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend, His kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end.

O’er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest, From age to age more glorious, all blessing and all blest. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove.

His name shall stand for ever: that name to us is Love.

Prayer after Communion (Page 272) Celebrant: Let us pray Faithful God, in this sacrament we receive the promise of salvation. May we, like the Virgin Mary, be obedient to your will. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. All: Amen.

Celebrant: Glory to God, All: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing Announcements Recessional Hymn 114 Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending

Lo, he comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! God appears on earth to reign.

Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; All who set at nought and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the tree,

Deeply grieving, Deeply grieving, Deeply grieving, shall the true Messiah see. Now redemption, long expected, see in solemn pomp appear; All his saints, on earth rejected, thrill the trumpet sound to hear: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! See the day of God appear.

Yea, amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly! Hallelujah!

Come, Lord, come!

Lay Assistant: This act of worship is ended! Our service in the world continues! Let us go in peace, to love and serve the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.
